Fabrication of Electro-Optic Grating Modulator Using $Ti:LiNbO_3$ Optical Waveguide ($Ti:LiNbO_3$ 광도파로를 이용한 전기광학 격자형 변조기 제작)

  • In this study, a planar waveguide has been fabricated on a Y-cut LiNbO3 substrate by the Ti indiffusion technique and its guiding characteristics are measured by bright M-line spectroscopy. Using the photolithography method, an electro-optic grating modulator with interdigital electrodes has been fabricated by depositing Al on the Ti:LiNbO3 planar waveguide. And the beam intensity diffracted by the grating is measured as the applied voltage is increased.

Electrical Relaxation in Silica Glasses and Nonlinearity in Electrical Conductivity (실리카 유리의 전기이완 특성과 비선형적 전기전도도)

  • The cause of optical nonlinearity induced in thermally poled silica glass is believed to be the space charge polarization. Since the second order optical nonlinearity (electro-optic effect) can be used in optical switches the optical nonlinearity in silica glass has drawn a large attention. Space charge polarization occurs when an ionic conducting material is subjected to dc electric field by the blocking electrode. Thermal poling performed to induce the optical nonlinearity in silica glass is basically identical to the process generating space charge polarization. As a first step to understand the mechanism of space charge polarization in silica glass hence the induced optical nonlinearity the absorption currents as functions of time were measured for various types of silica glasses and analyzed by the theory of space charge polarization. It was found that the electrical relaxation exhibited a step by the space charge polarization in the relatively long time range and dielectric loss peak showed a maximum at a specific temperature which is depending on type of silica glass. It was turned out that this relaxation might be a cause of nonlinearity in electrical conductivity of silica glass.

Influence of Rubbing Direction on the Electro-Optic Characteristics of Fringe Field Driven Hybrid Aligned Nematic Liquid Crystal Cell (프린지 필드에 의해 구동되는 하이브리드형 네마틱 액정 셀에서 러빙방향에 따른 전기광학 특성)

  • We have studied the influence of rubbing directions on electro-optic characteristics of the fringe field driven hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell by computer simulation. When a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy is used, the results show that the driving voltage and transmittance decreases as the rubbing direction with respect to horizontal electric field direction increases. The reason for decrease in light transmission is the reduction of twist angle and increase of tilt angle on the center of common electrode. In this paper, we have studied how the rubbing angle effects on the transmittance of the cell by investigating a distribution of electric field and LC director.

  • A two-beam polarization (TBP) interfermeter with a reflection configuration for measuring the linear electroptic coefficient is described and investigated experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that a TBP interferometer can be used for measuring the Pockels coefficient of thin film with a strong Fabry-Perot effect. The TBP interferometer technique is used to measure the effective differential linear electro-optic coefficient $re=r_{33}-(n_0/n_0)^3r_{13}$of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film. The results are in agreement with known data.

  • Recently. a new technique called Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) has been developed to overcome the drawbacks of existing holography. This technique enable real-time interference fringes to be displayed directly on TV monitor without recourse to any form of photographic processing. This research was carried out for the purpose of applying the vibration analysis method employing Electronic Speckle Pattern Interference technique to the vibration analysis of uniform rectangular cantilever plate. The natural vibration frequencies found by ESPI were in fair agreement with theoretical eigen frequencies acquired using theoretical formula G. B. Warburton proposed.

  • An electro-optic polymer digital optical switch with a coupling region modified for optimum mode coupling is proposed, and it is analyzed by using the beam propagation method combined with the effective index method. Its modified coupling region is adiabatically introduced along the propagation direction from the branching point of the two waveguides. The structure of the modified coupling region and its refractive index profiles are designed to optimize the mode coupling in the Y-branch waveguide. Therefor, the switching performance of the device may be enhanced with a fixed device length. It is confirmed from the numerical calculation that the drive voltage is reduced by more than 30 percents and te crosstalk is improved by about 8dB.

  • An integrated photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter has been proposed and fabricated using a nested dual Mach-Zehnder modulator configuration in a new electro-optic polymer. The fabricated device shows a continuous voltage control of the RF signal phase. A near-linear phase shift exceeding 108$^{\circ}$was obtained for a 16-GHz microwave signal by tuning the do control voltage over a 7.8- $V_{pp}$ range.e.

  • The Ce, Mn: $LiTaO_3$ crystals were grown by Czochralski method in congruent ${\varphi}$3" $LiTaO_3$ single crystal growing conditions. Concentrations of Ce and Mn in melt were respectively 0.1 mole%. As-grown crystals were red, transparent and the grown crystals were tested with oxidation/reduction treatment for clor and other properties. Influence of Ce and Mn dopants on $LiTaO_3$ crystal properties was discussed. And the nonlinear optical properties of the Ce, Mn: $LiTaO_3$ crystal are being studied.

  • In this paper, we system the system design and numerical analysis of the ultrafast optical delay line using by optical phase modulator. The numerical analysis carried out with 1310nm, lops laser and electro-optic phase modulator. As the results of numerical analysis, we show a scanning rate of 0.5 GHz and a delay range of 19.0ps. Compare with mechanical delay line, the optical delay line has a high scanning speed and a high repetition rate.

Electro-optic Characteristics of Reflective Optically Compensated Splay Cell (반사형 Optically Compensated Splay 셀의 전기-광학 특성)

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of reflective optically compensated splay (R-OCS) cell. The initial configuration of this cell is in splay form such that a mid director lies parallel to the substrate and around it hybrid structure is formed symmetrically so the optically compensation effect exists. Optimized optical configurations could be achieved by using a single polarizer, a quarter-wave film and a cell with quarter-wane retardation. The optimal cell retardation is 0.34 ${\mu}$m, allowing to have large cell gap. The cell provides high contrast ratio of 80:1 at normal direction and the region with contrast ratio over 5:1 covert up to 160$^{\circ}$ horizontally and vertically at all wavelength range.
