  • This study is a part of the project to identify water-quality degradation mechanism due to Fe and Mn in the river-bank infiltration system in the Changwon city, Kyungsangnam-Do. Results of hydrogeochemical logging indicated that the matrix of the river bank affects groundwater quality, probably related with the hydraulic conductivities of the different layers of bank deposits. Electric conductivity logging data clearly show various layers of groundwater flows. Further studies are necessary to identify mechanisms of increasing dissolved oxygen contents with depths at some monitoring wells.

  • An electronic initiation system that can support various types of field blasting works has been developed and put into practice. The newly developed equipment called Hanwha Electronic Blasting System (HEBS) II has three basic operation modes of scanning, logging, and tagging, among which the blaster can choose the most suitable one for the specific site conditions. In the present study, the work efficiency of the system in the scanning, logging and tagging modes was compared with that of the previous non-electric detonator. The results were estimated based on the aspects of the ground vibration, fragmentation, and digging time. It was found that the ground vibration, fragmentation, and digging time of the new system were decreased by about 45%, 31%, and 13%, respectively, with respect to the previous system. This result confirms that the new system is very efficient in the scanning, logging and tagging modes under the field conditions.

  • The estimation of the coeff. of permeability is a major process that influenced in very large portion to the changing of gound water movement and estimation of the outflow’s quantity in the ground water movement modelling. To overcome the error caused by difficulty of the ground investigation for the hydraulic parameter’s estimation, in this paper, we study of correlation between electric resistivity and coeff. of permeability, and analyse of coeff. of permeability from electric resistivity. To accomplish this purpose, we carry out electrical logging, AMT survey as an in-situ test, and measure electric resistivity, porosity, permeability for the intact rock as a laboratory test. Based on the results of this research, it can be applied that estimation of the coeff. of permeability using electrical logging and AMT survey is a effective method for the impossible area of the ground investigation caused by geographical condition and petition.

  • This investigation used two different geophysical logging techniques to confirm the depth to which a sheet pile was driven. Depth was estimated through analysis of the movement speed and three-component movement directions of a P-wave transmitted through the ground. It was also estimated by pole-pole and pole-dipole methods using electrical data logging to measure apparent resistivity. The two methods' respective results were 9.0 m (±1.5 m) and 7.5 m. As field ground conditions will include mixtures of various materials, electrical data logging is judged to be suitable for assessing depth due to its low signal-to-noise ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the high saline water phenomenon of Handong-ri area in the eastern coast of Jeju Island, were investigate the tidal effect of groundwater level, variation of electric conductivity and temperature, geological logging on the monitoring wells, chemical water quality, and ratios of oxygen istope of groundwater and seawater Results in investigating variation of interface zone of freshwater and saline water represented that the hyaloclastites formed at below groundwater table is developing toward the coast; this area consisted of stratum of good permeability. Hyaloclastites is presumed the main path of the high salinity water There are a lot of movement by the tide at upper layer. Salinity of lower layer spreads to upper up step in proportion to tidal energy. Because of hydrogeological characteristics, Interface zone of freshwater and saline water is made, High salinity of groundwater occur in east coastal area of Jeju Island. Therefore, I think that high saline groundwater phenomenon is natural condition by simple mixing.

  • In site investigation for tunnel designs, nowadays, geophysical exploration such as seismic exploration and electric resistivity exploration as well as drilling logging is frequently carried out. A method which can systematically make the utmost use of all available data obtained from investigation, therefore, is strongly required for the optimal evaluation of ground conditions in terms of rock mass class, etc. Many researchers have proposed using qualitative data to cope with the lack of quantitative data. In this study, an evaluation technique of rock mass classes in undrilled region was proposed based upon multiple indicator kriging method which is a geostatistical technique. It was shown that two types of data with different degree of uncertainty, for example, drilling logging data and geophysical exploration data, could be simultaneously utilized in evaluating rock mass classes for a real tunnel design.

  • This paper presents the state of art and the role of geophysical exploration techniques with evaluating the trend of domestic and worldwide seawater intrusion research, and illustrates advanced techniques obtained through the project of 'Development of the techniques for estimation, prediction, and prevention of seawater intrusion' funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea. The advanced geophysical interpretation was achieved by adding the digital geophysical logging data. DC resistivity and TEM monitorings were applied to determine whether or not the seawater intrusion was in progress. Induced Polarization technique using electric current monitoring channel was introduced to discriminate seawater contaminated zone from highly conductive layer caused by clay minerals. A conceptual model was suggested with spatial visualization of the study area to predict the diffusion of seawater contamination. Finally, the future work of the development of geophysical techniques was suggested with the base of the present level of them.

  • A geophysical conductivity logging technique has been adopted to determine hydraulic constants using a simplified physical model that depicts the borehole condition. An experiment has been made by monitoring the conductivity change within the model hole using borehole environment water and incoming-outgoing water of different salinity, under the state of constant flow rate by maintaining balance between inflow and outflow. Conductivity variation features were observed that depended on flow rate, salinity contrasts between fluid within the hole and incoming-outgoing fluid, and density contrasts between fluid conductivity within the hole and incoming fluid. The results of the experiment show the uniform change of fluid conductivity within the hole with time, a fairly good correlation between the flow rate and the conductivity change rate. The geophysical conductivity logging technique can be an efficient tool for determining hydraulic constants if the model equation is verified by henceforward experiments.

  • The hydrogeologic structure in the Chojung area was evaluated from a set of geological and geophysical investigations: detailed geological survey, vertical electric sounding (VES), borehole logging, and controlled-source magnetotelluric (CSMT) survey. Among these, CSMT soundings were taken for integrated interpretation to extend hydrogeologic structure with depth. The result of CSMT survey along with VES and borehole logging provides the vertical geologic boundary connected with hydrogeologic structure, and also indicates the depth of aquifer in granite basement. To interpret the geologic boundary and aquifer characteristics using CSMT data, we adopted the technique of 1-D inversion with smoothness-constrained method and 2-D continuous profiling with 1-D Bostick inversion and spatial filtering. The methodology tested and adopted in this study would be useful and required for providing a more information to the structure of fractured aquifer system.
