Electret-based microgenerators under sinusoidal excitations: an analytical modeling

  • The fast-growing number of mobile and wearable applications has driven several innovations in small-scale electret-based energy harvesting due to the compatibility with standard microfabrication processes and the ability to generate electrical energy from ambient vibrations. However, the current modeling methods used to design these small scale transducers or microgenerators are applicable only for constant-speed rotations and small sinusoidal translations, while in practice, large amplitude sinusoidal vibrations can happen. Therefore, in this paper, we formulate an analytical model for electret-based microgenerators under general sinusoidal excitations. The proposed model is validated using finite element modeling combined with numerical simulation approaches presented in the literature. The new model demonstrates a good agreement in estimating both the output voltage and power of the microgenerator. This new model provides useful insights into the microgenerator operating mechanism and design trade-offs, and therefore, can be utilized in the design and performance optimization of these small structures.

  • In this paper, We examine that characteristics of formative electret with polymer film and electric charge storage using grid corona discharge. compound polymer of fluorine resin used for material in electret because of high electric charge accumulation, excellent electrical and physical characteristic. All experiments were carried out with circular samples of $Teflon^(R)FEP$ film, 12.5[${\mu}m$] thick. As experiment variables, we used voltage, electrode thickness, discharge electrode gap, and discharge time. According to this variables, we studied on characteristics of formative electret and electric charge storage. Additionally we make a comparative study of the result between the grid corona discharge and needle electrode discharge.

전기방사를 통해 제조된 정전기 보유 필터의 표면전위 및 대전량에 따른 성능특성 분석 (Characteristic Analysis of Electret Filters made by Electrospinning)

  • Electret filter media are used in general ventilation filters, disposable respirators, vehicle cabin filters, vacuum cleaners and room air cleaners. There are basic mechanisms of interception, inertial impaction, diffusion, gravitational settling, electrostatic attraction by which an aerosol particle can be deposited onto a fiber in a filter. The ability of fine particle removal strongly depends on the electrostatic forces between particles and polarized fibers. Thus, the stability of the fiber polarization is a major factor in the reliability of electret filters. In this study, the electret filter is made by electrospinning process using Polystyrene which is dissolved by 5 : 5 of Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and Dimethylformamide (DMF). Also the electrical properties and the filtration performances of electrospun filter media are Quantitatively investigated. Electrical properties of electrospun filters have been studied on surface charge potential and surface charge density. Also the filtration performance of the electret filters are evaluated on collection efficiency. The surface charge potential and the surface charge density of electrospun PS filters are increased with increasing applied voltage and saturated at 30 kV of applied voltage. Also collection efficiency of electro spun filters is increased with increasing surface charge potential and surface charge density. But the surface charge potential is decreased by natural decay and it causes deterioration of particle collection efficiency.

도시 지하역사 미세먼지제어를 위한 이중여과장치의 현장적용 연구 (Field Application of a Double Filtration Process to Control Fine Dust in a Metro Subway Station)

  • This study attempted to find an alternative method for fine dust control in the pre-exiting facilities of metro-subway stations. A new double-layer design was proposed for the MVAC (mechanical ventilation and air control) system. Several filter lay-outs were combined a pre-filter with electret filter (EF), electret bundle filter (EBF), or electret pleated filter (EPF), and were then examined focusing on the collection efficiency of particulate matters and pressure drop across the filter layers. The experimental results from the lab and field tests showed the best collection efficiency with EPF, which achieved 85% for $PM_{10}$ and 55% for $PM_{2.5}$. It was also found from the long term field test that the new filter lay-out could provide quite consistent dust level particularly in underground platform regardless of external condition.

  • An electret fiber with a dipole charge distribution was used to capture charged ultrafine particles in this study. Brownian diffusion and Coulombic force are the dominant collection mechanisms in the electret filtration of charged ultrafine particles. The interaction between Brownian diffusion and Coulombic force for the deposition of ultrafine particles onto a dipolarly charged fiber is studied by solving the convective diffusion equation including Coulombic force as an external force, and the numerical results are compared with the experimental data. As a result, it is shown that there is a negative interaction between Brownian diffusion and Coulombic force, i.e., Coulombic capture efficiency is reduced with decreasing Pe. These results suggest that Brownian diffusion and Coulombic capture efficiency, $\eta$$_{CD}$ is not a simple sum of Brownian diffusion efficiency, $\eta$$_{D}$ and Coulombic capture efficiency, $\eta$$_{C}$.

승용차용 정전 필터 내의 정전 섬유의 보유 하전 감쇄에 의한 미세 입자 포집효율 변화 (Charge Depletion Effect on Collection Efficiency of an Electret Cabin Air Filter for Submicron Particles)

  • An electret filter is composed of permanently charged electet fibers and is widely used in applications requiring high collection efficiency and low-pressure drop. In this work, the collection efficiency of the filter media used in manufacturing cabin air filters was investigated by using poly-disperse particles when submicron particles are loaded. Long-term experiments were conducted by applying different charging states, which are spray electrification and charge equilibrium by bipolar ionization. In order to investigate on the effect of particle loading in filter media, NaCl particles were generated from 0.1% and 1% solutions by an atomizer. In NaCl 0.1%, the collection efficiency of electret filter decreased and then did not change in equilibrium state. In the case of relative larger particles of NaCl 1%, collection efficiency for the equilibrium charged particles increases due to the particle loading on the filter fibers. Particles charged by spray electrification are small in collection efficiency after equilibrium state and increase of filter media's pressure drop was very low in comparison of the equilibrium charged particles.

마찰대전 나노발전기의 출력 및 안정성 향상을 위한 일렉트렛 개발 (Development of Electret to Improve Output and Stability of Triboelectric Nanogenerator)

  • 초소형, 웨어러블 기기 기술의 빠른 발전에 따라, 전자기기 구동을 위한 시공간적인 제한이 없는 지속적인 전기 공급을 필요로 한다. 이에 따라, 두 가지 다른 재료의 접촉과 분리로 만들어지는 정전기를 활용하는 마찰대전 나노발전기(Triboelectric nanogenerator, TENG)는 간단한 원리 덕분에, 복잡한 과정 및 설계 없이도 자연에서 버려지는 다양한 형태의 에너지들을 효과적으로 수확하는 수단으로 활용되고 있다. 하지만, TENG의 실생활의 적용을 위해서는 전기적 출력의 증가가 필요하다. 또한, 전기적 출력의 증가뿐만 아니라 전기적 출력의 안정적인 발생은 TENG의 상용화를 위해서 해결해야 될 과제이다. 본 연구에서는 TENG의 출력을 향상시킬 뿐만 아니라, 향상된 출력을 안정적으로 나타낼 수 있는 방법을 제안하였다. 출력의 향상 및 안정성을 위해서 TENG 구성 요소 중 하나인 접촉층을 일렉트렛으로 사용하였다. 활용된 일렉트렛은 Fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) 필름에 코로나 차징과 열처리 과정을 순차적으로 진행함으로써 제작되었다. 코로나 차징으로 인해 인위적으로 주입된 전하가 열처리 과정에 의해서 깊은 트랩으로 들어가게 되어 전하의 이탈 현상이 최소화된 일렉트렛을 제작하고 이를 TENG 제작에 활용하였다. 제작된 일렉트렛의 출력 성능은 수직 접촉 분리 모드 TENG의 전압 출력을 측정함으로써 검증되었고, 코로나 차징 과정을 거친 일렉트렛은 어떠한 처리도 되지 않은 FEP 필름에 대비 12배 높은 출력 전압을 나타냈다. 일렉트렛의 시간 및 습도 안정성은 일반 외부 환경 및 극한의 습도 환경에 일렉트렛을 노출시킨 후, TENG의 출력 전압을 측정함으로써 확인되었다. 또한, 박수를 모티브로 한 Clap-TENG에 일렉트렛을 적용하여 LED를 작동시킴으로써 실생활에 적용할 수 있음을 보여주었다.
