  • This study aims to investigate causes of the emergence of so-called 'family-care workers' in the Long-term Care Insurance system in Korea. The LTCI system introduced in 2008 financially support the utilization of formal care services for the eligible elderly with care needs by paying for services of their care workers. Interestingly, 38.4 percent of payments for the in-home services were claimed by family members registered as qualified long-term care workers in 2012. We interviewed ten family care workers in depth and analyzed the needs of the aged and their families to explain the emergence of family care workers. The emergence of family-care workers is an inevitable result of choice by family members who face a dual burden of living and caring; be the additional choice following discharge the duty to support the elderly; be the alternative choice to fulfill unaccepted needs for services. These results suggest the needs for a comprehensive public provision of both income and social service support for the aged and an introduction of financial support for family care complementing the formal care support in the LTCI in Korea.

  • This study was designed to inquire into the effect of care worker's empowerment on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. For this, a survey was carried out on 200 care workers in elderly care facilities located in Chungcheong area from May 16 to May 30, 2011. Analysis showed that their empowerment has a significant impact on the improvement of job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and the reduction of turnover intention. This means that their high empowerment has a high inclination for job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and a low inclination for turnover intention according to the positive job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Consequently, considering their low empowerment, the job productivity and specialty may be eventually raised by improving their empowerment that brings out their own special abilities and merits with individual personality and aptitude, and showing more concerns and consideration for the job.

  • The purpose of this study aimed to examine the effects of job stress on the turnover intention through mediation of vacational consciousness and to reduce turnover intention of long-term care workers based on the results. We used 447 long-term care workers working in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. For the research purpose, the mediation effect was verified after the technical analysis and verifying multicollinearity using on SPSS and sobel-test. The results of this study are as follows: First, the lower the age of care worker and the higher the monthly household income, the higher the turnover intention. Second, the higher the perceived job stress, the higher the turnover intention. Third, the higher the job consciousness of the long-term care workers, the lower the turnover intention. Fourth, job stress of long-term care workers showed statistically significant effect on turnover intention by partial mediation of job consciousness. Based on the above results, I suggested the clinical and policy practice to prevent the separation of long-term care workers and improve the quality of care service for the elderly.

  • This study analyzed the effects of housing wealth on the balance accounts of elderly households with an age of over 60 facing the asset decumulation period, capitalizing upon an ordered logit model for the 2011 household finance survey data. Out of some variables representing personal and social characteristics, the age and waged worker variables had a positive effect, but the number of household, low education level, living in the apartment and capital region variables negatively affected the balance accounts of elderly households. Some variables reflecting economic wealth and financial strategies such as the attitude of risk-taking, ordinary income and the ratio of financial assets had a positive impact, but other variables such as DSR did a negative one on the balance accounts of the elderly households. The ownership of housing wealth variable positively, but the ratio of housing assets variable negatively affected the balance accounts of the elderly households, which could be derived from the duality of housing as both consumption goods and assets. However, the ownership of other real estates and the ratio of them in the total assets variables had a negative impact on the balance accounts of the elderly households. Furthermore, since the financial asset-debt ratio worsened the balance accounts of the elderly households with both housing and other real estates, it is implied that the purchase of real estates with excessive bank loans could make them dangerous.

In other words, if elderly people participating in the Senior Employment Project have higher self-esteem, and job satisfaction, their social relations are better. Based on the results, this author provides political suggestions as follows: first, it is needed to develop policies and programs that can enhance elderly people's self-esteem. Third, it is needed to develop both official and non-official support systems and build networks to form new social relations.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the accident characteristics according to the gender of the injured workers in building cleaning and to reflect them in the Industrial Accident Prevention Policy. Background: An analysis of industrial accidents is an essential process for establishing systematic industrial accident prevention measures. In order to establish industrial accident prevention measures for workers effectively, it is necessary to analyze accident characteristics by job type for workers who do the same work. Method: In this study, we analyzed the accident characteristics of 1,645 janitors who were approved of work-related injuries in 2015. We also analyzed the characteristics according to gender by dividing them into worker-related factors and accident-related factors. Results: The accidents caused to the janitors showed different characteristics according to gender, age, work experience, agency of accident, and distribution of original cause materials. In other words, 70.2% occurred to workers over 60 years old and 56.2% occurred to unskilled workers with less than a year of work experience. In the case of accident pattern, 79.1% occurred in tripping (slip) hazards, and 68.2% of accidents occurred on the floor (including the ground) and the stairs, indicating that the accident occurred most frequently during cleaning work on the floor or stairs. Conclusion and Application: The results of the study on the accident characteristics of the janitors can be used as basic data for systematic preventive measures against accidents occurring to the elderly female workers in the service industry.

  • This study was designed to search for the direction to develop housing service which assists the older people to live independently in their community and provides the systematization of community care. The subjects of the research include 533 older people between the age of 60 to 79 residing in Seoul and 84 welfare officials at a dong(in)-office and 67 social workers working at comprehensive social welfare institutions. The results were as follows: Both demanders and deliverers recognized that housing service for older people was necessary for community care, and, in particular, the deliverers had higher degree of necessity as people charged in welfare service. The most needed service was community alarm service which currently is proceeded partially for low-income and living-alone olders. It needed to expand the scope of the people to be served. It appeared that the need for inside safety measures rather than for housing space or structural problems. It requires less effort and cost for those who need simple repair, such as safety grips or slippery protection, and safety checks. Among financial support services, the need for tax benefits appeared the most necessary service for the older people. It suggested that more 'direct' financial support service is needed for the elderly people.

  • The purposes of this study were to : a) examine the current foodservice management practices of twenty-one seniors centers in charge of hoke-delivered meal programs, b) evaluate the attitudes of one hundred and ten recipients of meal service program, and c) provide feedback for the efficient and effective foodservice management for the elderly. Statistical data analysis was completed using the SAS package program for descriptive analysis, T-test, and ANOVA. The results of quantitative analysis indicated that the costs of meals, containers and special foods were mostly dependent on the support from local government(Seoul city). The centers where the volunteers were over seventy five p ercent of the workers were frtty-eight percent and sixty-seven percent of the subjects in food preparation and food delivery to the homebound clients, respectively. Meal preparation and food purchasing were mainly practiced by social welfare worker. Standardized recipes were not developed and meal preparation was controlled under the cook' and volunteers' experiences. The survey results of recipients who participated the home-delivered meals program showed that the mean of meal satisfaction score was rated over three point five in the five-point scale. There were significant differences between dependent variables(volunteer's kindness, plate waste, menu variety) and independent variables(sex, receiving periods and family type of the subjects). • Workers who die from falls at construction sites account for about 40 percent of the total number of deaths and are the main forms of accidents. In addition, as the nation's population structure is gradually aging, the rate of aging is increasing at construction sites, and the number of crashes due to decreased physical function and cognitive ability is increasing. Accordingly, we conducted a survey on the factors affecting the fall of older workers and would like to present more fundamental measures to prevent falls, focusing on older workers who are the victims of the disaster.
