  • Aging is accompanied with numerous transitions in life, and residential environment becomes a pivotal part of the elderly's lives. Physically supportive housing linked with services emerges in midst of the reality that retrofitting housing with special features has been seriously underfunded. The purpose of this study was to examine the residential satisfaction of the elderly in two types of independent living arrangements specially designed for the elderly. The indices of residential supportiveness were developed, and the questionnaire survey was adopted for data collection. Two hundred eighty residents living in two different kinds of senior housing participated in the survey, and all the collected responses were used for data analysis. The finding showed that almost all of the elderly positively assessed their senior living. That is, the statistical analysis illustrated that satisfaction indices of senior living significantly and positively contributed the satisfaction with overall residential environment. Satisfaction with physical environment was the only strong predictor in explaining current residential satisfaction of the elderly in senior rental housing, and accounted for a small proportion of the variance in the dependent variable. Since affordability was the biggest concern among residents in senior housing, it was of significance that long-term housing affordability was ensured and reduction in service cost by utilizing economies of scale was pursued.

The results are as follows: for the economic environment, 70% of the elderly households receive the economic help from children, but the amount of the help is not much. Less than 20% of the households receive the pension and public assistance. Most elderly households had more assets than debt. The households tend to spend more for the necessties than for the non-necessities. The higher the income, the more the assets and the higher the consumption expenditures the higher is the life satisfaction. Therefore it is necessary to provide the elderly with opportunities to increase their income. For the housing environment, most elderly live in their own detached house with average size of 23 pyung. And there is 1.6 households per house. The condition of housing facilities is poor. The elderly prefer staying in the same place to moving, and invest little for their housing even though being able to afford to do so. The housing satisfaction, which is significantly influenced by the ownership the size the quality change in moving and the housing facilities, is correlated with the satisfaction of their condition as elderly households and their living satisfaction. Therefore, thoughtful policy is required to improve the standard of housing condition for the elderly households.

  • In the 21st century, universal design has started to expand as new design value system for the diversity and various need of user: a new design that can reflects the welfare of the society. In addition, the percentage of population over 65 years old has been rising rapidly in Korea, and we are expected to reach 'aged society' with 14.3% of elderly population in 2018. In rural districts, population of the elderly has already reached 'super-aged society' with over 20%. With the rapid increase of the number of the elderly, the need for social service system is rising. For the independent living of the elderly, the dwelling space that supports their lifestyle is the most important factor. In advanced countries, they have proposed the housing for the elderly to keep living in their house, improvement of housing quality that fits the changing various needs of them. Until now, however, the most housing condition that the elderly has lived is poor living environment as below housing standards, especially housing in rural districts is very poor. The purpose of this study was to extract issue of housing in the rural districts in terms of universal design concept and reflecting the cultural and living characteristics of rural districts. With this, additionally, this study make understood about the necessity and important of universal design housing to reflect the characteristics of rural districts. For this study, data were collected from field survey and interview. The major results showed the following. 1) There were very various type of housing in rural districts. Spatial composition and shape was not related to living behavior and cultural characteristics of rural district. 2) The most new constructed housing was similar to urban housing type.
