In this study, we derived work-hardening exponent using continuous indentation test technique. Continuous indentation test technique is a powerful method to evaluate mechanical properties, such as hardness, modulus, ${\sigma}-{\varepsilon}$ curves and etc. It has many merits conventional indentation test has. The relationship between true stress and mean contact pressure and between strain and indentation depth were derived. While the indenter pushes the materials, the region around the indenter is deflected elastically. It is called elastic deflection. And pile-up phenomenon related to plastic deformation around the indenter increased the contact depth, and sink-in phenomenon decreases. So we calibrated contact depth change by considering elastic deflection and pile-up/sink-in. Using calibrated contact depth we redefined the relationship between true stress and mean contact pressure and between strain and contact depth. Through these relationship we could derive work-hardening exponent by analyzing load-depth curves. And it showed good agreement with tensile test results.

An elastic-plastic finite element analysis is performed to investigate detailed closure behaviour of fatigue cracks in residual stress fields and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The finite element analysis performed under plane stress using contact elements can predict fatigue crack closure behaviour. The mesh of constant element size along crack surface can not predict the opening level of fatigue crack. Specially, the mesh of element sizes depending upon the reversed plastic zone size included the effect of crack opening point can precisely predict the opening level. By using the concept of the mesh of element sizes depending upon the reversed plastic zone size included the effect of crack opening point, the opening level of fatigue crack can be determined very well.

The relationship between fatigue crack opening behavior and the reversed plastic zone sizes is studied. An elastic-plastic finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to examine the opening behavior of fatigue crack, where the contact elements are used in the mesh of the track tip area. The smaller element size than reversed plastic zone size is used fer evaluating the distribution of reversed plastic zone. In the author's previous results the FEA could predict the crack opening level, which crack tip elements were in proportion to the theoretical reversed plastic zone size. It is found that the calculated reversed plastic zone size is related to the theoretical reversed plastic zone size and crack opening level. The calculated reversed plastic zone sizes are almost equal to the reversed plastic zone considering crack opening level obtained by experimental results. It can be possible to predict the crack opening level from the reversed plastic zone size calculated by finite element method. We find that the experimental crack opening levels correspond with the opening values of contact nodes on the calculated reversed plastic zone of finite element simulation.

Indentation and small punch tests are very powerful methods to monitor the materials reliability since they are very simple, easy and almost non-destructive. First, recently-developed continuous indentation test can provide the more material properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, yield strength, work-hardening exponent, etc., than the conventional hardness test. In our study, the true stress-strain curve was derived from the indentation load-depth curve for spherical indentation. In detail, the strain was able to be obtained from plastic depth/contact radius ratio, and the flow stress was from mean contact pressure through the analysis of elastic-plastic indentation stress field. Secondly, the small punch test was studied to evaluate the fracture toughness and defomation properties such as elastic modulus and yield strength. Like the indentation test, this test can be applied without severe damage of the target structure.

The distribution of stress and strain in elastic stages is investigated by the experiments of two dimensional photoelastic coating and Moire fringe method. Center block type and cover plate type of fillet welds are used as specimens in the test. The results are as follows. 1) Center block type gets less uniform stress distribution than cover plate type. And its stress concentration factor, especially at root, is larger than that at toe. 2) When main plate and cover plate closely contact and it cause friction, stress concentration decreases more than that in case of slit. That is because stress can be transmitted on the contact surface. 3) When slit is made, the outside of fillet gets more stress than the inside of it. 4) While the plastic strain distribution of center block type reaches the maximum at root and differs very slightly from that under lower loading, the plastic strain distribution of cover plate type is inclined to get the maximum at the outside of fillet rather than at root. 5) When the plastic strain value of cover plate type is compared with that of center block type at toe and root, the relations between the former and the latter shows root<toe and root>toe. 6) Because stress distribution becomes changed according to loading, fracture angle cannot be estimated by the peaks of elastic stress distribution. 7) The strain distribution just before fracture can be found by Moire fringe method.

In this paper, it is proposed hew the rigid element method suggested in the first paper can be applied to the elastic and elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell with the open stiff ring. In the analytical model, the solution domain is divided into rectangular-shaped spherical bending elements. Each contact surface of two adjacent elements is interconnected with four elastic springs, and it is assumed that the internal forces are distritributed into springs. The 6 degrees of freedom of the element are placed in the center of elements, and the 6 cen-teroidal rigid displacements affect other elements through springs around elements. And then the solution domain is estimated by the behavior of elements and springs. In this study, these concepts are applied to the elastic and elasto-plastic analysis for the eight cases of the spherical shell according to the condition of stiff ring, the condion of loading and the size of opening. And then some numerical results such as the distribution of stresses, the force-displacement curves and the mode of fractures will he shown.
In flat rolling mills, demands for precise process set-up and control are increasing than ever before. Consequently, it is imperative to establish a novel approach, which would provide valuable information regarding the detailed aspects of deformation behavior of the strip, and rolls during rolling. In this paper, we present a finite element (FE) approach for 3-D coupled analysis of the elastic-plastic deformation of the strip and the elastic deformation of rolls in the roll-stack of a mill stand.

The rail/wheel rolling contact affects the microstructure in the surface layer of rail. Recently. continuum damage mechanics allows us to describe the microprocesses involved during the straining of materials and structures at the macroscale. Elastic and plastic strains. the corresponding hardening effects are generally accepted to be represented by global continuum variables. The purpose of continuum damage mechanics is to introduce the possibility of describing the coupling effects between damage processes and the stress-strain behavior of materials. In this study. the continuum damage mechanics caused by elastic deformation was briefly introduced and applied to the fatigue damage of the rails under the condition of cyclic loading. The material parameter for damage analysis was first determined so that it could reproduce the life span under the compressive loading in the vicinity of fatigue limit. Some numerical studies have been conducted to show the validity of the present computational mechanics analysis.
Wear is affected by numerous factors-contact load, sliding velocity and distance, friction coefficient, material properties and environmental conditions. Among these wear factors, surface hardness is one of very important factors to determine wear. But surface hardness is varied by work hardening during repeated sliding contact. In this reason wear rate is increased or decreased with varying surface hardness, and transition of wear mechanism is happened. In this study, the surface hardening by accumulating residual stress was analyzed by considering the repeated sliding Hertzian contact model. The results showed that surface hardness was increased with increasing contact load, friction coefficient and contact number. And the depth of hardening layer, plastic layer and elastic layer depended upon contact load and number, but they didn't depend upon friction coefficient. The predicted surface hardness was about 1.5-1.8 times as hard as the material.
The thermal contact resistance(TCR) of nanosized contact spots has been investigated through a multiscale analysis which considers the resolution of surface topography. A numerical simulation is performed on the finite element model of rough surfaces. Especially, as the contact size decreases below the phonon mean free path, the size dependent thermal conductivity is considered to calculate the TCR. In our earlier model which follows an elastic material, the TCR increases without limits as the number of nanosized contact spots increases in the process of scale variation. However, the elastoplastic contact induces a finite limit of TCR as the scale varies. The results are explained through the plastic behavior of the two contacting models. Furthermore, the effect of air conduction in nanoscale is also investigated.
