Background Even though the quality of medical and surgical care has improved remarkably over time, iatrogenic injuries that require surgical treatment including injuries caused by cast and elastic bandage pressure, extravasation, and dopamine-induced ischemia still frequently occur. The goal of this study was to estimate the incidence and analyze the distribution of iatrogenic injuries referred to our department. Methods A retrospective clinical review was performed from April 2006 to November 2010. In total, 196 patients (116 females and 80 males) were referred to the plastic surgery department for the treatment of iatrogenic injuries. We analyzed the types and anatomic locations of iatrogenic complications, along with therapeutic results. Results An extravasation injury (65 cases, 37.4%) was the most common iatrogenic complication in our study sample, followed by splint-induced skin ulceration, dopamine-induced necrosis, prefabricated pneumatic walking brace-related wounds and elastic bandage-induced wounds. Among these, prefabricated pneumatic walking brace-related complication incidence increased the most during the 5-year study period. Conclusions The awareness of the very common iatrogenic complications and its causes may allow physicians to reduce their occurrence and allow for earlier detection and referral to a plastic surgeon. We believe this is the first study to analyze iatrogenic complications referred to a plastic surgery department in a hospital unit.

The introduction of the Eurocodes makes plastic design criteria available also for composite bridges, leading to more economical solutions compared with previous elastic design rules. Particularly for refurbishment old bridges with higher actual traffic loads, up to date outside the scope of the Eurocodes, strengthening should therefore be avoidable or at least be necessary only to a minor extent. For bridges with smaller spans and compact cross sections, the plastic load bearing capacity is clearly justified. In this work, however, the focus is placed on long span continuous composite bridges with deep, longitudinally stiffened girders, susceptible to local buckling. In a first step, the elastic - plastic cross section capacity of the main girder in bending is studied as an isolated case, based on high preloads acting on the steel girder only, due to the common assembling procedure without scaffolding. In a second step, the effects on the whole structure are studied, because utilising the plastic section capacity at midspan leads to a redistribution of internal forces to the supports. Based on the comprehensive study of an old, actual strengthened composite bridge, some limitations for plastic design are identified. Moreover, fully plastic design will sometimes need additional global analysis. Practical recommendations are given for design purposes.

Generally the life of die is limited by fatigue fracture or dimensional inaccuracy originated from wear. In this paper to predict the fatigue life of die the stress and strain histories of die can be predicted by the analysis of elastic-plastic finite element method and the elastic analysis of die during the process analysis of workpiece. Also the stress-life curve of die material can be obtained through experiment. With the above to재 facts we propose the analysis method of prediction fatigue life in die,. In the proposed model the analysis of elastic-plastic finite element method for material is carried out by using ABAQUS. Surface force resulted from the contacting border of the die and workpiece is transformed into the nodal force of die to implement elastic analysis. besides the proposed analysis model of die is applied to extrusion die and forging. die.
In metal forming, there are problems with recurrent geometric characteristics without explicitly prescibed boundary conditions. In such problems, so-called recurrent boundary conditions must be introduced. In this paper, as a practical application of the proposed method, the precision cold forging of a helical gear has been simulated by a three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method and compared with the experiment. The application of recurrent boundary conditions to helical gear forging analysis is proved to be effective and valid. the elastic stress analysis of the die for helical gear forging has been calculated by using the nodal force at the final stage obtained from the rigid-plastic finite element analysis. In order to obtain more precise gear products, the elastic analysis of the die after release of punch and the elastic spring-back analysis of product after ejection have been performed, and the final dimension of the computational product has been in good agreement with that of the experimental product.
An effective moment of inertia is developed for a rectangular, prismatic elastoplastic beam with elastic, linear-hardening material behavior. The particular solution for a beam with elastic, perfectly plastic material behavior is also presented with applications for beam bending in closed-form. Equations are presented for the direct application of the virtual work method for elastoplastic beams with concentrated and distributed loads. Comparisons are made between the virtual work method deflections and the deflections obtained by using an average effective moment of inertia over two lengths of the beam in the elastoplastic region.
This study evaluated the effect of restraint of pressure induced bending(PIB) on crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) for circumferential through-wall crack in pipe by using both elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses. The analyses results showed the restraint of PIB was decreased crack opening for a given crack length and tensile stress, and the effect was considerable for large crack and short restraint length. Also, the restraint effect on CMOD was independent on the variation in pipe diameter and decreased with increasing pipe thickness, and it depended on not total restraint length but short restraint length for non-symmetrically restrained. Additionally, the effect of restraint of PIB was more significant in the elastic-plastic analysis results compared with in the elastic analysis results.
Ratcheting boundary is firstly determined by experiment, elastic-plastic finite element analysis combined with C-TDF and linear matching method, which is compared with ASME/KTA and RCC-MR. Moreover, based on elastic modulus adjustment procedure, a novel method is proposed to predict the ratcheting boundary for a pressurized pipe subjected to constant internal pressure and cyclic bending loading. Comparison of ratcheting boundary of elbow pipe determined by the proposed method, elastic-plastic finite element analysis combined with C-TDF and linear matching method, which indicates that the predicted results of the proposed method are in well agreement with those of linear matching method.
The effects of severe plastic deformation and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of Al 5052 and 6005 alloys were investigated using the metallurgical technique and nano-indentation technique in nano-surface region. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was used to apply severe plastic deformation to the aluminum alloys in order to obtain fine grain sized materials. The elastic modulus was measured and interpreted in relation to the metallurgical observation. The elastic modulus increased after ECAP process due to evolution of the fine grains. However, the elastic modulus decreased after heat treatment due to generation of coarsened precipitates on the grain boundaries.
The paper involves the study on the elastic and elasto-plastic stress wave propagation in the 1-D and 2-D solid media. The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics equations governing the elastic and elasto-plastic large deformation dynamic response of solid structures are presented. The proposed additional stress points are introduced in the formulation to mitigate the tensile instability inherent in the SPH approach. Both incremental rate approach and leap-frog algorithm for time integration are introduced and the new solution algorithm is developed and implemented. Two examples on stress wave propagation in aluminium bar and 2-D elasto-plastic steel plate are included. Results from the proposed SPH approach are compared with available analytical values and finite element solutions. The comparison illustrates that the stress wave propagation problems can be effectively solved by the proposed SPH method. The study shows that the SPH simulation is a reliable and robust tool and can be used with confidence to treat transient dynamics such as linear and non-linear transient stress wave propagation problems.

Finite element alternating method has been suggested and used effectively to obtain the fracture parameters in assessing the integrity of cracked structures. The method obtains the solution from alternating independently between the FEM solution for an uncracked body and the crack solution in an infinite body. In the paper, the finite element alternating method is extended in order to obtain the elastic-plastic stress fields of a three dimensional inner crack. The three dimensional crack solutions for an infinite body were obtained using symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. As an example of a three dimensional inner crack, a penny-shaped crack in a finite body was analyzed and the obtained elastc-plastic stress fields were compared with the solution obtained from the finite element analysis with fine mesh. It is noted that in the region ahead of the crack front the stress values from FEAM are close to the values from FEM. But large discrepancy between two values is observed near the crack surfaces.
