This paper presents the analytical investigation pertaining to the local buckling behavior of orthotropic channel section compression members stiffened with unsymmetric stiffeners at its free edges. In the analysis, tile edge stiffener is modeled as a beam element or a plate element. The result of both cases is presented in graphical form so that the effects of edge stiffeners on the local buckling strength of edge stiffened channel section member can be found.
Local buckling is a major consideration in the design of thin-walled cold-formed steel sections. The main effect of local buckling in plate elements under longitudinal compressive stresses is to cause a redistribution of the stresses in which the greatest portion of the load is carried near the supporting edges of the plate junctions. The redistribution produces increased stresses near the plate junctions and high bending stresses as a result of plate flexure, leading to ultimate loads below the squash load of the section. In singly symmetric cross-sections, the redistribution of longitudinal stress caused by local buckling also produces a shift of the line of action of internal force (shift of effective centroid). The fundamentally different effects of local buckling on the behaviour of pin-ended and fixed-ended singly symmetric columns lead to inconsistencies in traditional design approaches. The paper describes local buckling and shift of effective centroid of thin-walled cold-formed steel channel columns. Tests of channel columns have been described. The experimental local buckling loads were compared with the theoretical local buckling loads obtained using an elastic finite strip buckling analysis. The shift of the effective centroid was also compared with the shift predicted using the Australian/New Zealand and American specifications for cold-formed steel structures.
This work aims to present a solution for the buckling behavior of perforated nano/microbeams with deformable boundary conditions using nonlocal strain gradient theory (NLSGT). For the first time, a solution that can provide buckling loads based on the non-local and strain gradient effects of perforated nanostructures on an elastic foundation, while taking into account both deformable and rigid boundary conditions. Stokes' transformation and Fourier series are used to realize this aim and determine the buckling loads under various boundary conditions. We employ the NLSGT to account for size-dependent effects and utilize the Winkler model to formulate the elastic foundation. The buckling behavior of the perforated nano/microbeams restrained with lateral springs at both ends is studied for various parameters such as the number of holes, the length and filling ratio of the perforated beam, the internal length, the nonlocal parameter and the dimensionless foundation parameter. Our results indicate that the number of holes and filling ratio significantly affect the buckling response of perforated nano/microbeams. Increasing the filling ratio increases buckling loads, while increasing the number of holes decreases buckling loads. The effects of the non-local and internal length parameters on the buckling behavior of the perforated nano/microbeams are also discussed. These material length parameters have opposite effects on the variation of buckling loads. This study presents an effective eigenvalue solution based on Stokes' transformation and Fourier series of the restrained nano/microbeams under the effects of elastic medium, perforation parameters, deformable boundaries and nonlocal strain gradient elasticity for the first time.

In this study, a large deflection analysis of a plane frame composed of a thin-walled tube in investigated. When bent, a thin-walled tube is usually controlled by local buckling and subsequent bending collapse of the section. So load resistance reaches the yield level in a thin-walled rectangular tube. This relationship can be divided into three regimes : elastic, post-buckling and crippling. In this paper, this relationship is theoretically presented to be capable of describing nonlinearities and a stiffness matrix is derived by introducing a compound beam-spring element. A numerical analysis uses a constant incremental energy method and the solution is obtained by modifying stiffness matrix at elastic/inelastic stage. This analytical results, load-deflection paths show a good agreement with the test results.

In the present research, thermo-elastic buckling of small scale functionally graded material (FGM) nano-size plates with clamped edge conditions rested on an elastic substrate exposed to uniformly, linearly and non-linearly temperature distributions has been investigated employing a secant function based refined theory. Material properties of the FGM nano-size plate have exponential gradation across the plate thickness. Using Hamilton's rule and non-local elasticity of Eringen, the non-local governing equations have been stablished in the context of refined four-unknown plate theory and then solved via an analytical method which captures clamped boundary conditions. Buckling results are provided to show the effects of different thermal loadings, non-locality, gradient index, shear deformation, aspect and length-to-thickness ratios on critical buckling temperature of clamped exponential graded nano-size plates.
A dynamic elastic local buckling analysis is presented for a pile subjected to an axial impact load. The pile is assumed to be geometrically perfect. The interactions between the pile and the surrounding soil are taken into account. The interactions include the normal pressure and skin friction on the surface of the pile due to the resistance of the soil. The analysis also includes the influence of the propagation of stress waves through the length of the pile to the distance at which buckling is initiated and the mass of the pile. A perturbation technique is used to determine the critical buckling length and the associated critical time. As a special case, the explicit expression for the buckling length of a pile is obtained without considering soil resistance and compared with the one obtained for a column by means of an alternative method. Numerical results obtained show good agreement with the experimental results. The effects of the normal pressure and the skin friction due to the surrounding soil, self-weight, stiffness and geometric dimension of the cross section on the critical buckling length are discussed. The sudden change of buckling modes is further considered to show the 'snap-through' phenomenon occurring as a result of stress wave propagation.
This paper is developed a computer program to analysis the elastic local and overall buckling stress based on Eurocode 3 Part 1.3 for the flange and web, and Euler equations for columns of cold-formed channel under compression at elevated temperatures. The high temperature stress-strain relationships of steel used this paper are determined according to Eurocode 3 Part 1.2. Critical temperatures and the elastic local buckling stresses of the cold-formed channel columns under compression at elevated temperatures are analysed by the computer program developed in this study. Analysis examples are given to show the applicability of the computer program developed in this study.
Application of "advanced analysis" methods suitable for non-linear analysis and design of steel frame structures permits direct and accurate determination of ultimate system strengths, without resort to simplified elastic methods of analysis and semi-empirical specification equations. However, the application of advanced analysis methods has previously been restricted to steel frames comprising only compact sections that are not influenced by the effects of local buckling. A concentrated plasticity method suitable for practical advanced analysis of steel frame structures comprising non-compact sections is presented in this paper. The pseudo plastic zone method implicitly accounts for the effects of gradual cross-sectional yielding, longitudinal spread of plasticity, initial geometric imperfections, residual stresses, and local buckling. The accuracy and precision of the method for the analysis of steel frames comprising non-compact sections is established by comparison with a comprehensive range of analytical benchmark frame solutions. The pseudo plastic zone method is shown to be more accurate and precise than the conventional individual member design methods based on elastic analysis and specification equations.
Elements used in steel structures may be considered as an assembly of number of thin flat walls. Local buckling of these members can limit the buckling capacity of axial load resistance or flexural strength. We can avoid a premature failure, caused by effects of local buckling, by limiting the value of the wall slenderness which depend on its critical buckling stress. According to Eurocode 3, the buckling stress is calculated for an internal wall assuming that the latter is a simply supported plate on its contour. This assumption considers, without further requirement, that the two orthogonal walls to this wall are sufficiently rigid to constitute fixed supports to it. In this paper, we focus on webs of steel profiles that are internal walls delimited by flanges profiles. The objective is to determine, for a given web, flanges dimensions from which the latter can be considered as simple support for this web.
The present paper investigate the elastic buckling of chiral double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) under axial compression. Using the non-local elasticity theory, Timoshenko beam model has been implemented. According to the governing equations of non-local theory, the analytical solution is derived and the solution for non-local critical buckling loads is obtained. The numerical results show the influence of non-local small-scale coefficient, the vibrational mode number, the chirality of carbon nanotube and aspect ratio of the (DWCNTs) on non-local critical buckling loads of the (DWCNTs). The results indicate the dependence of non-local critical buckling loads on the chirality of single-walled carbon nanotube with increase the non-local small-scale coefficient, the vibrational mode number and aspect ratio of length to diameter.
