Anaerobic sewage treatment is drawing attentions due to high energy consumptions and sludge production associated with aerobic treatment. This study evaluates the treatment characteristics and energy balance of a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) for treating domestic sewage at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for 245 days. Sewage fed to the FBR was a primary clarifier effluent of a domestic sewage treatment plant with COD of 99-301 mg/L and $BOD_{5}$ of 37-149 mg/L. Effluent $SBOD_{5}$ and its removal efficiency at HRT of 1~3 h were 6~15 mg/L and 73.4~85.5%, respectively, achieving high removal efficiency for soluble organic substances even at short HRTs. COD removal efficiency and its effluent concentration were 53.8~75.9% and 51~83 mg/L, respectively. The energy production potential from gaseous methane was 0.009-0.028 kWh/$m^{3}$, which satisfies the energy required for the FBR operation.
In this study, the influence of the control and operational parameters within a sewage treatment plant were reviewed by performing multiple regression analysis on the effluent quality of the sewage treatment. The data used for this review are based on the actual data from a sewage treatment plant using the media process within the year 2012. The prediction models of chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Mn}$) and total nitrogen (T-N) within the effluent of the 2nd settling tank based on the multiple regression analysis yielded the prediction accuracy measurements of 0.93 and 0.84, respectively; and it was concluded that the model was accurately predicting the variances of the actual observed values. If the data on the energy spent on each operating condition can be collected, then the operating parameter that conserves energy without violating the effluent quality standards of COD and T-N can be determined using the regression model and the standardized regression coefficients. These results can provide appropriate operation guidelines to conserve energy to the operators at sewage treatment plants that consume a lot of energy.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between the effluent of a sewage treatment plant (STP) and the adjacent stream located downstream of the STP in Nakdong River. Flow and water quality data, such as BOD, COD, SS, T-N, and T-P data, for 12 STPs and adjacent downstream monitoring stations in the main stream and tributaries of Nakdong River were collected from 2012 to 2015. As a result of correlation analysis between river flow and water quality at the river water quality measurement point, COD, SS, and T-P were correlated positively with the river flow rate at 6, 8, and 6 points, respectively. As a result of analyzing the water quality of sewage treatment plant effluents and downstream streams, BOD and COD were correlated at 2 and 3 points, respectively. T-N showed a positive correlation at 9 points, and 7 of them had a strong positive correlation, indicating that sewage treatment effluent had a large effect on downstream streams. In this study, we found that the correlation between the river flow rate and the water quality factors (COD, SS, TP) was high at river water measurement points, and the sewage treatment plant effluent was correlated with the T-N value of adjacent streams.
There is a need to improve the efficiency of the existing sanitary treatment facilities, because the effluent standard becomes more stricter and septic sludge increased. Thus, operating processes of sanitary treatment system in M city changed with installation of additional facilities. Process modifications were as follows: Dilution water was added to the next process after primary aeration tank. Some secondary sedimentation sludge was recycled to primary aerator so that most of the organics were stabilized in primary aeration tank under automatic control of dissolved oxygen. The line of effluent from dewatering process flowing to the activated sludge tank was changed to the primary aerator. The primary sedimentation sludge line was linked to a thickener. Polymer was added to the activated sludge tank. The effluent of primary aerator and aerobic digester was recycled from the 5th to the 1st sector. As consequencies of above process modifications, the improvement of removal efficiency was achieved as BOD 54%, COD 42%, SS 61%, T-N 39%, and T-P 12%, respectively.
In order to find fungi having high treatment activity of kraft pulp bleaching (E1) effluent without any additional nutrietns, 124 strains of white-rot fungi were isolated from decayed wood samples. The author isolated five fungi(KS-62, MZ-400 , YK-719, YK-472 and Phanerochaete sordida YK-624) having high-decolorization activity of the E1 effluent. Particularly, the fugus KS-62 show the high effect of the decolorization and the degradation of the chlorinated lignin in the E1 , effluent compared with Coriolus versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium.
Difference of total coliforms (TC) survival time of mixed samples (effluent were mixed by seawater or freshwater) were examined in various conditions. The time taken to achieve a 90% reduction in the TC concentration ($T_{90}$) of effluent, high initial TC concentration and low initial TC concentration samples indicated 143.9, 121.9 and 89.6 hours at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. At $4^{\circ}C$, log removal rate after 336 hours were 0.96, 1.04, and 1.30. TC survival time of effluent-inoculated seawater sample was longer than that of effluent-inoculated freshwater sample in laboratory. At outdoor condition, TC inactivation curves of effluent-inoculated seawater or freshwater samples showed similar patterns. And both of them were greatly influenced by climate condition. There was not enough evidence that TC survived longer in freshwater than sea water. It was unlikely that the salinity of sea water contributed to the inactivation process of TC.
This study was performed to investigate the disinfection efficiency and the formation characteristics of disinfection by-products(DBPs) by chlorination in the sewage effluent. The effluent was sampled from the sewage treatment plants operated in the activated sludge process and the advanced sewage process. The type of DBPs investigated were Trihalomethanes(THMs), Dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN), Chloral hydrate(CH), Dichloroacetic acid(DCAA), Trichloroacetic acid(TCAA). Major findings are as follows. First, the optimum injection concentration for chlorination in sewage effluent were found to be in the range $0.5{\sim}1.0mg\;cl_2/L$. Also, It was found that the chlorine dosage in the effluent of activated sludge process was higher than in the effluent of advanced sewage process. Second, the maximum formation concentration of THMs were $12.7{\mu}g/L$. The THMs formation reaction was finished in a short time of several seconds and chloroform was mainly formed. Also, it was found that the concentration of ammonium nitrogen is higher, the concentration of THMs is lower. Third, it was found that DCAA and TCAA were mainly formed as DBPs by disinfection.
In this study, the antibiotic components in the final effluent from the 12 wastewater treatment facilities located in the Nakdong River basin were investigated, and the correlation between organic matters, nutrients and antibiotics was analyzed. In the final effluent of the wastewater treatment facilities, three sulfonamides antibiotics (sulfamethazine, sulfathiazole, sulfachlorpyridazine) and tetracyclines antibiotics (oxytetracycline, doxycycline) were detected. Sulfamethazine were detected at all points and ranged from 10.398 to 278.784 ng/L. Sulfathiazole were detected at 6 points (Andong, Gumi, Hapcheon, Miryang, Uiryeong, Haman), and ranged from 23.773 to 144.468 ng/L. The correlation coefficients between sulfathiazole and TSS, COD, TOC, NH3-N, NO2-N, and T-N components were high in the range of 0.73 to 0.92. The correlation coefficient between sulfamethazine and T-N was 0.48, and the correlation with the rest of the water quality components was low. The correlation coefficient between sulfamethazine and sulfathiazole was 0.78. Through this study, it was confirmed that the concentration of sulfonamides antibiotics was higher than the concentration of tetracyclines antibiotics in the final effluent of 12 wastewater treatment facilities in the Nakdong River basin, and the concentration of sulfathiazole increased with organic matters and nutrients.

A pilot study was performed from July 1998 to December 2002, including winter performance, to examine seasonal performance of a constructed wetland and subsequent pond system for treatment of sewage in small communities of Korea. Pond was operated as a intermittent-discharge pond during winter period, and continuous flow system during growing season; its effects was evaluated from December 2001 to April 2003. The subsurface flow (SSF) wetland was satisfactory for treating sewage with good removal efficiency even during the winter period. The wetland effluent concentrations of $BOD_5$ and TSS were often higher in winter than in the growing season, but this was explained by the higher loading rates, rather than lower removal efficiency. The relatively poor-quality wetland effluent was further polished during winter in the pond. The upper layer of the pond water column became remarkably clear immediately after ice melt. In the growing season, ponds could be operated as a continuous flow system to remove nutrients and pathogens, and the effluent of pond could be reused as a supplemental irrigation water without risk of infection by sewage-borne pathogens as well as causing adverse effect on growth and yield. Overall, the wetland system was found to be adequate for treating sewage with stable removal efficiency, and the intermittent-discharge pond was found to be effective for further polishing if necessary. Therefore, the combination of a wetland and subsequent pond system and reuse of effluent as crop irrigation water is recommended as a practical alternative to treat sewage in Korean small communities, and partial discharge of pond water in March is suggested.
