We investigated influence of connected influent on the treatability of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), recently accepting effluent from a sludge carbonization facility. Based upon the pollutant loading rates (kg/d) of each connected influent, food waste leachate and livestock wastewater contributed to high BOD and COD loadings, while sludge carbonization facility effluent certainly contributed to T-N and $NH_3-N$ loadings. The nitrification rate in aerobic tank decreased to 55% with the carbonization facility effluent entering to the WWTP, while it was 89% with no carbonization facility effluent entering. The sludge carbonization facility effluent may need to be pretreated to reduce T-N and $NH_3-N$ loadings before entering to the WWTP for further treatment.
Water quality, benthic macroinvertebrate communities, and other factors were investigated to explore the effects of the effluent discharge from a sewage treatment plant into Jwagwang stream in Busan in 2019. During the study period, the flow rate of this stream was in the range of 10,400 m3/day to 52,200 m3/day except for the discharge of about 24,000 m3/day of the effluent. After discharge, the flow velocity increased by about 65% and the water depth increased by about 40%. At sites downstream of the discharge point, BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P, and other water quality values were worse than those of the upstream sites. The periphytic algal chlorophyll-a concentrations in the natural substrata were higher than those of the upstream sites, especially in May and August. However, at sites downstream of the discharge point, the individual numbers of Annelida were decreased and individual numbers of the insecta of arthropoda were increased. Also, species numbers and the diversity and dominance indexes were improved in the sites downstream of the discharge point. The functional feeding groups (FFGs) of collector-filterers were increased and the habitat orientation groups (HOGs) of sprawlers, burrowers, and clingers were especially increased at the sites with additional reclaimed wastewater effluent flow. Regardless of the effluent discharge, BMI, an indicator of ecological stream health using benthic macroinvertebrate species, did not show large gaps between the study points. Although the water quality of the sites downstream of the discharge point was much worse than those upstream, their ecosystem soundness was better than those of the upstream sites from an ecological perspective.

Background: The purpose of this study is to purify uranium (U[VI])-contaminated soil-flushing effluent using the precipitation-distillation process for clearance. Precipitation and distillation are commonly used techniques for water treatment. We propose using a combination of these methods for the simple and effective removal of U(VI) ions from soil-flushing effluents. In addition, the U concentration (Bq/g) of solid waste generated in the proposed treatment process was analyzed to confirm whether it satisfies the clearance level. Materials and Methods: Uranium-contaminated soil was decontaminated by soil-flushing using 0.5 M sulfuric acid. The soil-flushing effluent was treated with sodium hydroxide powder to precipitate U(VI) ions, and the remaining U(VI) ions were removed by phosphate addition. The effluent from which U(VI) ions were removed was distilled for reuse as a soil-flushing eluent. Results and Discussion: The purification method using the precipitation-distillation process proposed in this study effectively removes U(VI) ions from U-contaminated soil-flushing effluent. In addition, most of the solid waste generated in the purification process satisfied the clearance level. Conclusion: The proposed purification process is considered to have potential as a soil-flushing effluent treatment method to reduce the amount of radioactive waste generated.

Tongyeong is an important shellfish harvesting area, that hosts the largest designated sea area for shellfish exports in South Korea. In particular, the Dosan-Poonghwa Sea Area in Tongyeong is a semi-enclosed bay with poor water circulation and significant pollution due to its proximity to urban areas. This study examined the distribution of fecal pollution indicators (total coliforms, fecal coliforms, male-specific coliphages, and norovirus G1/G2) in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). This study assessed the impact of the effluent discharge on shellfish harvesting areas in the Dosan-Poonghwa Sea Area to better safeguard shellfish farms and guarantee the safety of harvested shellfish. A strong positive correlation was observed between total and fecal coliforms in both influent (r=0.974, P<0.01) and effluent (r=0.779, P<0.05), with no other significant correlations observed. The impacts of the effluent was evaluated according to NSSP guidelines. The volume of seawater required to dilute the effluent discharged per day was calculated. This evaluation indicated that surrounding aquaculture areas were not impacted, and no viruses were detected in oysters collected from the Dosan-Pungwha Sea Area.

In this study, model-based $NH_4-N$ predictive control algorithm by using influent pattern was developed and evaluated for effective control application in $A^2/O$ process. A pilot-scale $A^2/O$process at S wastewater treatment plant in B city was selected. The behaviors of organic, nitrogen and phosphorous in the biological reactors were described by using the modified ASM3+Bio-P model. A one-dimensional double exponential function model was selected for modeling of the secondary settlers. The effluent $NH_4-N$ concentration on the next day was predicted according to model-based simulation by using influent pattern. After the objective effluent quality and simulation result were compared, the optimal operational condition which able to meet the objective effluent quality was deduced through repetitive simulation. Next the effluent $NH_4-N$ control schedule was generated by using the optimal operational condition and this control schedule on the next day was applied in pilot-scale $A^2/O$ process. DO concentration in aerobic reactor in predictive control algorithm was selected as the manipulated variable. Without control case and with control case were compared to confirm the control applicability and the study of the applied $NH_4-N$control schedule in summer and winter was performed to confirm the seasonal effect. In this result, the effluent $NH_4-N$concentration without control case was exceeded the objective effluent quality. However the effluent $NH_4-N$ concentration with control case was not exceeded the objective effluent quality both summer and winter season. As compared in case of without predictive control algorithm, in case of application of predictive control algorithm, the RPM of air blower was increased about 9.1%, however the effluent $NH_4-N$ concentration was decreased about 45.2%. Therefore it was concluded that the developed predictive control algorithm to the effluent $NH_4-N$ in this study was properly applied in a full-scale wastewater treatment process and was more efficient in aspect to stable effluent.

Recently, regulations on toxic compounds in aquatic environment have been strengthened in korea due to the increasing public awareness of the water quality. Typically, these regulations include introduction of emerging toxic compounds and stricter effluent limitations for the already regulated compounds. However, too strict regulations may cause excessive burden on the industry. Therefore it is also important to assess the economic impacts when the new effluent limitation guidelines are introduced. The estimation of the additional cost for the wastewater dischargers to meet the new guidelines are based on the selected treatment technology to handle the hazardous substances and the regulatory levels for effluent limitations. To explore the procedures for cost estimation in enforcing new effluent limitations, a case study was performed specially for 1,4-dichlorobenzene. The pollutants of concern are surveyed for different industrial categories and various treatment technologies. For a given pollutant, the general performances of the treatment technologies are surveyed and a representative technology is selected. For a given technology, the capital cost and annual Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cost was calculated. The calculation of baseline costs to operate ordinary treatment technologies is also important. The ratio between the cost for introducing new treatment process and the baseline cost required for conventional technology was used to evaluate the economic impact on the industry. For 1,4-dichlorobenzene, steam stripping and activated carbon processes were selected as the specific treatment technologies. The cost effects to the regulation of the compound were found to be 6.4% and 14.5% increase in capital cost and O&M cost, respectively, at the flow rate over $2,000m^3/d$ for the categories of synthetic resin and other plastics manufacturing industry. For the case of petrochemical basic compounds manufacturing industry, the cost increases were 5.8% and 12.4%, respectively. It was suggested that cost effect analysis to evaluate the economic impacts of new effluent limitations on the industry is crucial to establish more balanced and reasonable effluent limitations to manage the industrial wastewater containing emerging toxic compounds in the wastewater.

Nitrogen and phosphorus removal was investigated in an UASB-ABF (Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket - aerated bio-filter) anaerobic sewage treatment system. Successful removal of nitrogen and phosphorus with organic matters was possible in the UASB-ABF system from the results of 160 days operation with the influent raw domestic sewage. Removal efficiencies of organic matter (as TCOD) showed 64% in UASB without recycle of the ABF effluent, however, they increased to 92%, 95%, 96% with 120%, 180% and 240% recycle of the ABF effluent, respectively. Increasement of the organic matter removal was not prominent at recycle ratio above 180%. Apparent increase in TN removal occurred with recycle of the ABF effluent. TN removal efficiency was 18% without recycle, but it increased to 82% with 240% recycle of the ABF effluent. And stable nitrification above 95% was possible as a result of efficient removal of organic matter in the UASB with and without recycle of the effluent. Removal of both TP and $PO{_4}^{3-}$-P also increased remarkably with recycle of the effluent. Without recycle of the effluent, that is at strict anaerobic condition in UASB, TP was not removed, however, its removal efficiency increased to 51%, 63%, 71% at recycle ratios of 120%, 180%, 240%, respectively mainly at UASB.
In recent years, Ministry of Environment (MOE) has been implementing a phased strengthening of the effluent standards for sewage treatment plants. In this regard, a comprehensive system should be developed to help check the appropriateness of such standards by specifying the grounds for standard-setting and investigating the current operation of sewage treatment plants clearly. It is necessary to establish a new standard-setting system for the effluent that is in a closer connection with the environmental criteria and rating systems. In the United States, the federal government provides guidelines on the least provisions and requirements for the Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs). Local governments set the same or stricter guidelines that reflect the characteristics of each state. In Japan, the sewage treatment plants are subject to both the effluent standards and the discharge acceptable limits to pubic waters under the sewerage law. Specific requirements and limits are set in accordance with local government regulations. The European Union imposes sewage treatment plants with different provisions for effluent standards, depending on the sensitivity of public waters to eutrophication. The effluent standards for sewage treatment plants are classified by pollutant loads discharged to receiving waters. MOE also needs to introduce systems for setting new parameter standards on a POTW effluent by applying statistical means and treatment efficiencies or optimal treatment techniques, as seen in the cases of the US National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) or the EU Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC).
In this study, the factors affecting biological N and P removal using SND (simultaneous nitrification and denitrification) process were investigated and evaluated to examine the possibility of treating N and P through SND with NADH by surveying N and P traces in an aeration tank. Variations of $NH_4^+$-N+$NO_3^-$-N concentration were used to estimate the degree of SND in each point (P2, P3, P4, P5) of the aeration tank and these variations showed that denitrification efficiency in P2 (front zone), nitrification and denitrification efficiencies in P4 (middle zone) were 67%, 86% and 39%, respectively. When $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration was analyzed in each point of the aeration tank, it was shown that $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration coming into P2 was 1.25 mg/L, which increased to 2.22 mg/L by P release in P2 zone and then decreased to 0.74 mg/L by P uptake in P4. Consequently, we were able to estimate which high P removal efficiency observed in this study was caused by biological phosphorus removal. To determine the operating factors affecting effluent T-N, we analyzed the correlation among FN/M ratio, C/N ratio, Temp., SRT etc and these results showed that the correlation among FN/M ratio, C/N ratio and Temp was not high. However, the relationship of SRT and other parameters (effluent $NH_4^+$-N and effluent BOD) and the short SRT could have an affect on effluent $NH_4^+$-N and so effluent BOD could be increased. Thus, SRT operation should be controlled over 10 days. The results for analyzing the correlation between SRT and influent $NO_3^-$-N in order to investigate the operating factors affecting effluent T-P showed that T-P or $PO_4^{-3}$-P was not highly correlation with SRT, whereas $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration increased along with increasing $NO_3^-$-N concentration into P2. Based on these results, we concluded, using regression analysis (R2=0.97), that effluent $PO_4^{-3}$-P concentration depends on $NO_3^-$-N concentration into P2.
