  • Human Genome Project (HGP) could unveil the secrets of human being by a long script of genetic codes, which enabled us to get access to mine the cause of diseases more efficiently. Two wheels for HGP, bioinformatics and high throughput technology are essential techniques for the genomic medicine. While microarray platforms are still evolving, we can screen more than 500,000 genotypes at once. Even we can sequence the whole genome of an organism within a day. Because the future medicne will focus on the genetic susceptibility of individuals, we need to find genetic variations of each person by efficient genotyping methods.

  • Retransmission in optical burst switching networks is a solution to recover data loss by retransmitting the dropped burst. The ingress node temporarily stores a copy of the complete burst and sends it each time it receives a retransmission request from the core node. Some retransmission schemes have been suggested, but uncontrolled retransmission often increases the network load, consumes more bandwidth, and consequently, increases the probability of contention. Controlled retransmission is therefore essential. This paper proposes a new controlled retransmission scheme for loss recovery, where the available bandwidth of wavelength channels and the burst lifetime are referred to as network conditions to determine whether to transmit a dropped burst. A retrial queue-based analysis model is also constructed to validate the proposed retransmission scheme. The simulation and analysis results show that the controlled retransmission scheme is more efficient than the previously suggested schemes regarding byte loss probability, successful retransmission rate, and network throughput.

  • This paper presents a novel and efficient data transmission scheme based on mobile edge computing for the massive IoT environments which should support various type of services and devices. Based on an accurate and precise synchronization process, it maximizes data transmission throughput, and consistently maintains a flow's latency. To this end, the proposed efficient software defined data transmission scheme (ESD-DTS) configures and utilizes synchronization zones in accordance with the 4 usage cases, which are end node-to-end node (EN-EN), end node-to-cloud network (EN-CN), end node-to-Internet node (EN-IN), and edge node-to-core node (EdN-CN); and it transmit the data by the required service attributes, which are divided into 3 groups (low-end group, medium-end group, and high-end group). In addition, the ESD-DTS provides a specific data transmission method, which is operated by a buffer threshold value, for the low-end group, and it effectively accommodates massive IT devices. By doing this, the proposed scheme not only supports a high, medium, and low quality of service, but also is complied with various 5G usage scenarios. The essential difference between the previous and the proposed scheme is that the existing schemes are used to handle each packet only to provide high quality and bandwidth, whereas the proposed scheme introduces synchronization zones for various type of services to manage the efficiency of each service flow. Performance evaluations show that the proposed scheme outperforms the previous schemes in terms of throughput, control message overhead, and latency. Therefore, the proposed ESD-DTS is very suitable for upcoming 5G networks in a variety of massive IoT environments with supporting mobile edge computing (MEC).

  • Inverted index structures have become the most efficient data structure for high performance indexing of large text collections, especially online index maintenance, In-Place and merge-based index structures are the two main competing strategies for index construction in dynamic search environments. In the above-mentioned two strategies, a contiguity of posting information is the mainstay of design for online index maintenance and query time. Whereas with the emergence of new storage device(SSD, SCRAM), those do not consider a contiguity of posting information in the design of index structures because of its superiority such as low access latency and I/O throughput speeds. However, SSD(Solid State Drive) is not well suited for traditional inverted structures due to the poor random write throughput in practical systems. In this paper, we propose the new efficient online index structure(SPM) for SSD that significantly reduces the query time and improves the index maintenance performance.

  • This paper presents a novel eight-parallel 128/256-point mixed-radix multi-path delay commutator (MRMDC) FFT/IFFT processor for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed FFT architecture can provide a high throughput rate and low hardware complexity by using an eight-parallel data-path scheme, a modified mixed-radix multi-path delay commutator structure and an efficient scheduling scheme of complex multiplications. The efficient scheduling scheme can reduce the number of complex multipliers at the second stage from 88 to 40. The proposed FFT/IFFT processor has been designed and implemented with the 90nm CMOS technology. The proposed eight-parallel FFT/IFFT processor can provide a throughput rate of up to 27.5Gsample/s at 430MHz.

  • Due to the development of IT technology, hardware technologies applied to IoT equipment have recently been developed, so smart systems using low-cost, high-performance RF and computing devices are being developed. However, in the infrastructure environment where a large amount of IoT devices are installed, big data collection causes a load on the collection server due to a bottleneck between the transmitted data. As a result, data transmitted to the data collection server causes packet loss and reduced data throughput. Therefore, there is a need for an efficient big data collection technique in an infrastructure environment where a large amount of IoT devices are installed. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient big data collection technique in an infrastructure environment where a vast amount of IoT devices are installed. As a result of the performance evaluation, the packet loss and data throughput of the proposed technique are completed without loss of the transmitted file. In the future, the system needs to be implemented based on this design.

  • In this paper, we investigate a power control problem which is very critical in underlay-based spectrum sharing systems. Although an underlay-based spectrum sharing system is more efficient compared to an overlay-based spectrum sharing system in terms of spectral utilization, some practical problems obstruct its commercialization. One of them is a real-time-based power adaptation of secondary transmitters. In the underlay-based spectrum sharing system, it is essential to adapt secondary user's transmit power to interference channel states to secure primary users' communication. Thus, we propose a practical power control scheme for secondary transmitters. The feedback overhead of our proposed scheme is insignificant because it requires one-bit signaling, while the optimal power control scheme requires the perfect information of channel states. In addition, the proposed scheme is robust to feedback delay. We compare the performance of the optimal and proposed schemes in terms of primary user's outage probability and secondary user's throughput. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme is almost optimal in terms of both primary user's outage probability and secondary user's throughput when the secondary user's transmit power is low. As the secondary user's transmit power increases, the primary user's outage probability of the proposed scheme is degraded compared with the optimal scheme while the secondary user's throughput still approaches that of the optimal scheme. If the feedback delay is considered, however, the proposed scheme approaches the optimal scheme in terms of both the primary user's outage probability and secondary user's throughput regardless of the secondary user's transmit power.

  • In cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs), secondary users (SUs) can occupy licensed bands opportunistically without causing interferences to primary users (PUs). SUs perform spectrum sensing to detect the presence of PUs. Sensing time is a critical parameter for spectrum sensing that can yield a tradeoff between sensing performance and secondary throughput. In this study, we investigate new approaches for spectrum sensing by exploring the tradeoff from a) spectrum sensing for PU detection (SSPD) and b) spectrum sensing for secondary throughput (SSST). In the proposed scheme, the first sensing result of the current frame determines the dynamic performance of the second spectrum sensing. Energy constraint in CRSNs leads to maximized network energy efficiency via optimization of sensing time. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme of SSPD and SSST improves network performance in terms of energy efficiency and secondary throughput, respectively.

  • Next Generation Beyond 4G/5G systems will rely on the deployment of small cells over conventional macrocells for achieving high spectral efficiency and improved coverage performance, especially for indoor and hotspot environments. In such heterogeneous networks, the expected performance gains can only be derived with the use of efficient interference coordination schemes, such as Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR), which is very attractive for its simplicity and effectiveness. In this work, femtocells are deployed according to a spatial Poisson Point Process (PPP) over hexagonally shaped, 6-sector macro base stations (MeNBs) in an uncoordinated manner, operating in hybrid mode. A newly introduced intermediary region prevents cross-tier, cross-boundary interference and improves user equipment (UE) performance at the boundary of cell center and cell edge. With tools of stochastic geometry, an analytical framework for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) distribution is developed to evaluate the performance of all UEs in different spatial locations, with consideration to both co-tier and cross-tier interference. Using the SINR distribution framework, average network throughput per tier is derived together with a newly proposed harmonic mean, which ensures fairness in resource allocation amongst all UEs. Finally, the FFR network parameters are optimized for maximizing average network throughput, and the harmonic mean using a fair resource assignment constraint. Numerical results verify the proposed analytical framework, and provide insights into design trade-offs between maximizing throughput and user fairness by appropriately adjusting the spatial partitioning thresholds, the spectrum allocation factor, and the femtocell density.

  • Recently, the bandwidth available to an end user has been dramatically increasing with the advancing of network technologies. This high-speed network naturally requires faster and/or stable data transmission techniques. The UDT(UDP based Data Transfer protocol) is a UDP based transport protocol, and shows more efficient throughput than TCP in the long RTT environment, with benefit of rate control for a SYN time. With a NAK event, however, it is difficult to expect an optimum performance due to the increase of fixed sendInterval and the flow control based on the previous RTT. This paper proposes a rate control method on following a NAK, by adjusting the sendInterval according to some degree of RTT period which calculated from a set of experimental results. In addition, it suggests an improved flow control method based on the TCP vegas, in order to predict the network congestion afterward. An experimental results show that the revised flow control method improves UDT's throughput about 20Mbps. With combining the rate control and flow control proposed, the UDT throughput can be improved up to 26Mbps in average.
