  • Multi-criteria result extraction is crucial in many scientific applications that support real-time stream processing, such as habitat research and disaster monitoring. Skyline evaluation is computational intensive especially over continuous time-interval data streams where each object has its own customized expiration time. In this work, we propose TI-Sky - a continuous skyline evaluation framework. To ensure correctness, the result space needs to be continuously maintained as new objects arrive and older objects expire. TI-Sky strikes a perfect balance between the costs of continuously maintaining the result space and the costs of computing the final skyline result from this space whenever a pull-based user query is received. Our key principle is to incrementally maintain a partially precomputed skyline result space - however doing so efficiently by working at a higher level of abstraction. TI-Sky's algorithms for insertion, deletion, purging and result retrieval exploit both layers of granularity. Our experimental study demonstrates the superiority of TI-Sky over existing techniques to handle a wide variety of data sets.

  • The Semantic Web is proposed as the next generation Web technology. In the environment of the Semantic Web, resources are related with each other semantically and computers can process this information easily. The Resource Description Framework (RDF) supports this semantic relationship. RDF is the data model for describing metadata of the Web resources. To establish and develop the Semantic Web, methods for managing RDF data efficiently are the most important. So, in this research, we propose methods for storing and querying RDF data using an XML database system. Using an XML database system, XML data, main data of the Semantic Web, and RDF data, the metadata of XML data, can be managed in the same storage and by the same mechanism efficiently. In addition, we propose an efficient data retrieval method and several techniques to improve the system performance. Our query processing technique performs better than an existing system.

  • In this paper, we propose a new spatio-temporal representation scheme which can model moving objets trajectories effectively in video data and a new signature-based access method for moving objects trajectories which can support efficient retrieval on user query based on moving objects trajectories. The proposed spatio-temporal representation scheme supports content-based retrieval based on moving objects trajectories and concept-based retrieval based on concepts(semantics) which are acquired through the location information of moving objects trajectories. Also, compared with the sequential search, our signature-based access method can improve retrieval performance by reducing a large number of disk accesses because it access disk using only retrieved candidate signatures after it first scans all signatures and performs filtering before accessing the data file. Finally, we show the experimental results that proposed scheme is superior to the Li and Shan's scheme in terns of both retrieval effectiveness and efficiency.

  • To provide efficient and correct search results, ontology which use the structure of information, is considered as a main mechanism in the semantic web. Therefore, recent research in information retrieval and data construction have emphasized the use of ontologies as a data representation and search mechanism. In this paper, we propose a semantic search method using ontology to improve search ability in web environment. Ontology and knowledge base is used to represent semantic meaning of the data and provide related web documents and facts as results. Also, search result ranking mechanism is proposed. The mechanism use cardinality of the keyword in the contents and structural information of ontology. Experimental results with several query processing indicate that different coefficient value in the expression gives different results in sample ontology system and we propose appropriate values of the coefficient.

  • In navigation system, a primary task is to compute the minimum cost route from the current location to the destination. One of major problems for navigation systems is that a significant amount of computation time is required when the digital road map is large. Since navigation systems are real time systems, it is critical that the path be computed while satisfying a time constraint. In this paper, we have developed a HiTi(Hierarchical MulTi) graph model for hierarchically structuring large digital road maps to speedup the minimum cost path computation. We propose a new shortest path algorithm named SPAH, which utilizes HiTi graph model of a digital road map for its computation. We prove that the shortest path computed by SPAH is the optimal. Our performance analysis of SPAH also showed that it significantly reduces the computation time over exiting methods. We present an in-depth experimental analysis of HiTi graph method by comparing it with other similar works.

  • In an RFID search protocol, a reader uses designated query to determine whether a specific tag is in the vicinity of the reader. This fundamental difference makes search protocol more vulnerable to replay attacks than authentication protocols. Due to this, techniques used in existing RFID authentication protocols may not be suitable for RFID search protocols. In this paper, we propose two RFID search protocols, one based on static ID and the other based on dynamic ID, which use counter to prevent replay attacks. Moreover, we propose a security model for RFID search protocols that includes forward/backward traceability, de-synchronization and forgery attack. Based on this model, we analyze security of our protocols and related works.

  • With the rapid development of wireless communication and mobile equipment, many applications for location-based services have been emerging. Moving objects such as vehicles and ships change their positions over time. Moving objects have their moving path, called the trajectory, because they move continuously. To monitor the trajectory of moving objects in a large scale database system, an efficient Indexing scheme to processed queries related to trajectories is required. In this paper, we focus on the issues of minimizing the dead space of index structures. The Minimum Bounding Boxes (MBBs) of non-leaf nodes in trajectory-preserving indexing schemes have large amounts of dead space since trajectory preservation is achieved at the sacrifice of the spatial locality of trajectories. In this thesis, we propose entry relocating techniques to reduce dead space and overlaps in non-leaf nodes. we present performance studies that compare the proposed index schemes with the TB-tree and the R*-tree under a varying set of spatio-temporal queries.

  • When an XML document is updated in order to represent correctly the structural relationships of nodes in a document, the existing XML labeling schemes relabel nodes or use a labeling scheme that the label of a node has much information. However, the relabeling on large XML documents needs many labeling costs and the labeling scheme that the label of a node has much information requires many storage costs. Therefore, the existing labeling schemes degrade significantly query processing performance on dynamic XML documents. This paper proposes the bit-pattern labeling scheme that solves the problems of the existing schemes. The proposed labeling scheme outperforms the existing labeling schemes because the structural relationships of nodes are represented with a bit string.

  • For tracing tag locations, the trajectories should be modeled and indexed in radio frequency identification (RFID) systems. The trajectory of a tag can be represented as a line that connects two spatiotemporal locations captured when the tag enters and leaves the vicinity of a reader. If a tag enters but does not leave a reader, its trajectory is represented only as a point captured at entry. Because the information that a tag stays in a reader is missing from the trajectory represented only as a point, it is impossible to find the tag that remains in a reader. To solve this problem we propose the data model in which trajectories are defined as time-parameterized intervals and new index scheme called the Time Parameterized Interval R-tree. We also propose new insert and split algorithms that reduce the area of nodes to enable efficient query processing. We evaluate the performance of the proposed index scheme and compare it with previous indexes on various datasets.
