  • Analyzed is the spectral response profile specification used for the infrared (IR) channels of the meteorological imagers of GOES series geostationary satellites. The variation characteristics of effective wavelength and effective input radiance due to the change of the spectral response function profile within the imager performance specification are analyzed in order to propose how to understand the spectral response specification. As an analysis approach, at first a center symmetrical spectral response function and 4 worst case spectral response functions are selected within the spectral response specification, and then effective wavelength and effective input radiance are calculated for each spectral response function. As a result, the maximum allowable ranges of effective wavelength and effective input radiance are provided per the spectral response specification.

  • Although color characteristics of IPS mode are much better than TN or VA mode, there still remains a room for improvement of the color characteristics of IPS mode compared with the conventional CRT. It has been generally as sumed that inherent color variation of IPS mode is entirely owing to dependence of the effective retardation on wavelength and role of optical axis of IPS mode has been little considered. In this study, we investigated the effects of driving voltages on the effective retardation and the effective optical axis by a computer simulation. The result shows that rotation of effective optical axis is dependent on wavelength and tends to be smaller for larger wavelength.

  • Virtual wavelength path (VWP) is the optical path when a wavelength conversion is possible in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network that is transmission infrastructure for the next generation high speed backbone networks. To achieve efficient design for VWP networks, we must consider VWP routing, wavelength assignment, and wavelength conversion while satisfying many technical constraints of the WDM networks. In this study we propose an integrated model for efficient VWP design in WDM networks. We also develope a 3-phase algorithm, each of which deals with routing, wavelength assignment and route and wavelength reassignment, respectively. In our computational experiments, phase 1 algorithm can solve the problem to the optimality for medium size test networks. Phase 2 algorithm is an efficient heuristic based on a reduced layered network and can give us an effective wavelength assignment. Finally, phase 3 algorithm reconfigure VWP routing and its wavelength assignment to concentrate wavelength conversion nodes in the suggested VWP network.

  • We report a measurement of the effective refractive index of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) inside a Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon according to the applied electric fields. The effective refractive index of the NLC depends on the intensity of the applied electric field. A wavelength-swept laser with a polygon-scanner-based wavelength filter is used as a wide-band optical source to measure the effective refractive index of the NLC. The bandwidth of the optical source is greater than 90 nm around 1300 nm. The fabricated NLC FP etalon consists of glass substrates, gold layers as the electrodes with highly reflective surfaces, polyimide layers as the planar alignment layers, and an LC layer. Furthermore, we measured the Freedericksz transition voltages for three types of NLC FP etalons having thicknesses of $30.6{\mu}m$, $55.4{\mu}m$, and $108.8{\mu}m$. The Freedericksz transition voltages in the three cases are nearly equal. The measured effective refractive indices in the three cases decreased from 1.67 to 1.51 as the applied electric field intensity was increased. Beyond the threshold electric field, the effective refractive indices quickly decreased and eventually saturated at a value of 1.51 for all cases.

  • The effective elastic properties of materials containing spherical inclusions were calculated by the elastic wave scattering theory. In the formulation additional scattering fields by the presence of random multiple scatterers that affects the effective properties were found by the single scattering approximation. In calculating the scattering fields the ensemble average on the displacements and strains inside the scatterer was found from the static approximation at long wavelength limit. The displacements were assumed to be equal to the incident field, while the strains were calculated by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion principle on the single inclusion problem. Four different models were considered and they reflected different degrees of multiple scattering effects based on the approximation introduced in the process of embedding the inclusion in the matrix. The expressions for the effective elastic constants were given in each model, and their relations to the results obtained from other scattering theory and elasticity theory were discussed. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results on the epoxy matrix composites containing tungsten particles of different sizes and volume fractions

  • The effective cutoff wavelength of $LP_11$mode is measured as a function of fiber length for three types of single-mode optical fiber which have different characteristics in the index profile or the coating structure. The measured cutoff wavelength decreased linearly in a logarithmic scale of fiber length as increasing fiber length, and eventually became constant after 3km for two fiber types. It is found that the length dependence of cutoff wavelength is due to a mode coupling between the $LP_01$ and $LP_11$ modes.

  • Various methods for analyze optical components which are necessary before the fabrication of optical circuit component and as its applications, designing method of Wavelength Division Multiplexer(WDM) filter using arrayed-waveguide grating(AWG) is paper. In the case of analyzing uniform optical waveguide, effective index method(EIM), harmonic expansion method are used, and in the case of non-uniform optical waveguide, beam propagation method(BPM) are used. In this paper, to use arrayed-waveguide grating as WDM filter of centered wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ and wavelength spacing of 0.8nm, all of the parameter of AWG is calculated by the HEM and the BPM using EIM. As a result of calculation, free spectral range is 12.8nm, focal length $9336.55{\mu}m$, path difference $129.36{\mu}m$ and the number of slab waveguide 91 when the distance of core center to center on row land circle is $20{\mu}m$.

  • Wavelength tunable, narrowbandwidth wvelength filters in compound semiconductor have been modeled, fabricated, and characterized. In order to obtain a narrow bandpass characteristics at 1.55.$\mu$m, a highly asymmertrical directional coupler structure composed of a strongly guided ridge waveguide and a weakly guided strip-loaded waveguide was used. The optimized filter structure modeling has been obtained by using the spectral index method, effective index method, and the coupled mode theory. Operation at a center wavelength a 1.537.mu.m with a bandwidth of 1.8nm and transfer efficiency of 50-70% is experimentally achieved. For the purpose of center wavelength tuning, the carrier injection in p-n diode structure has been theoretically investigated. It has been found that the tuning range of nanometer can be easily obtained by moderate amount carrier injection. We also found that the bandwidth becomes broad as the center wavelength tuning increases.

  • We present an experimental and numerical study of spectral profiles of effective group indices of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) waveguides and of their chromatic-dispersion effect on the four-wave-mixing (FWM) signal generation. The a-Si:H waveguides of 220-nm thickness and three different widths of 400, 450 and 500 nm were fabricated by using the conventional CMOS device processes on a $2-{\mu}m$ thick $SiO_2$ bottom layer deposited on 8-inch Si wafers. Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) were formed with the a-Si:H waveguides, and used for precise measurement of the effective group indices and thus for determination of the spectral profile of the waveguides' chromatic dispersion. The wavelength ranges for the FWM-signal generation were about 45, 75 and 55 nm for the 400-, 450- and 500-nm-wide waveguides, respectively, at the pump wavelength of 1532 nm. A widest wavelength range for the efficient FWM process was observed with the 450-nm-wide waveguide having a zero-dispersion near the pump wavelength.

  • Background and Objectives Due to changes in diet and lifestyle, the number of obese people worldwide is steadily increasing. Obesity has an adverse effect on a healthy life, so it needs treatment and improvement. Research related to this is continuously being conducted. Materials and Methods The laser system to compact designed using 808 nm laser diode and Neodymium Yttrium orthovanadate generates a 1064 nm wavelength, the periodically polarized nonlinear crystal pumping laser beam. The pulsed 1064 nm wavelength beam passing through the AO Q-switch is used as the pumping light of the nonlinear optical crystal and is irradiated to the periodic polarized nonlinear optical crystal with a quasi-phase matching period. Nonlinear optical crystals use an oven to control the temperature to generate the desired 1980 nm and 2300 nm wavelengths. Results The 1980 nm and 2300 nm wavelengths generated by temperature control of nonlinear optical crystals are effective for lipolysis. A fiber catheter was used so that the laser could be directly irradiated to the fat cells. In particular, the new wavelength (1980 nm, 2300 nm) can increase the fat reduction effect with low energy (1.3 W). When a laser with a combination wavelength of 1980 nm and 2300 nm was used, an average lipolysis effect of 20% was obtained. Conclusion A mid-infrared lipolysis laser system with excellent absorption of fat and water has been developed. We conducted a princlinical study to confirm the efficacy and safety of the lipolysis laser system, and obtained good results for lipolysis with low energy.
