Effects of corner cuts and angles of attack on the Strouhal number of rectangular cylinders

  • An investigation into the effect of corner cuts on the Strouhal number of rectangular cylinders with various dimensional ratios and various angles of attack is described. The Strouhal number given as a function of corner cut size is obtained directly from the aerodynamic behavior of the body in a uniform flow through a series of wind-induced vibration tests. For a quick verification of the validity of the Strouhal numbers obtained in this way, they are compared with the approximated the Strouhal numbers based on Shiraishi's early research. The test results show that the Strouhal number of the model with various corner cuts has a fluctuating trend as the angle of attack changes. For each cutting ratio as the angle of attack increases at each cutting ratio above $15^{\circ}$, the Strouhal number decreases gradually, and these trends are more evident for larger corner cut sizes. However, a certain corner cut size which is effective in reducing the wind-induced vibration can be identified by larger Strouhal numbers than those of other corner cut sizes. Three distinct characteristics of Strouhal number variation can be identified in three regions which are termed as Region I, II, and III based on the general trend of the test results. It is also found that the corner cut is effective in one region (Region-II) and less effective in another one (Region-III) when only the vortex-induced vibration occurs.

  • The stability of a rotor-bearing system supported by swirl-controlled hybrid journal bearing with pair-type angled injection orifices is investigated for improvement of the whirl frequency ratio by allowing effective control of the tangential flow inside the bearing clearance, i.e., by achieving more freedom in controlling strength and direction of the supply tangential flow inside the bearing clearance. It is suggested that the system instability can be improved through the change of bearing dynamic characteristic parameters with the swirl control. The orifice diameter d$_0$ and recess injection angle $\alpha$ along with combinations of swirl/anti-swirl supply pressures and directions (3.0-3.0MPa, 4.0-2.0MPa, 2.0-4.0MPa) are selected for design parameters for swirl-controlled effective factors dependent on journal speeds (3000, 9000, 15000, 21000 rpm). It has been found that the orifice diameter do shows strong effects on effective maneuverability of direct-stiffness and direct damping values, while recess injection angle $\alpha$ results in substantial magnitude and direction of cross-stiffness. Specifically, recess injection parameters which are functions of angle of orifice feeding flow and recess dimensions showed very feasible effect on the stability of swirl-controlled rotor-bearing system.

Nocardia amarae를 이용한 석유 유상액의 탈유화 (De-emulsification of Petroleum Emulsion Using Nocardia amarae)

  • The characteristics of de-emulsification of pertroleum emulsion by Nocardia amarae were investigated. Insoluble medium containing n-hexadecane was more effective than soluble medium in de-emulsification of emulsion containing diesel and bunker C as the organic phase. Emulsion made by the addition of xanthan or bioemulsifier was de-emulsified by N. amarae, and longer culture age was effective. In low viscosity range, organic phase with longer carbon chain was more effective. The contact, angle between bacterial film and water droplet in air increased from 16 degree for 4 day culture age to 26 degree for 15 day. The contact angle between bacterial film and water droplet in kerosene, n-heyxane or n-hexadecane also increased to greater than 100 degree after 3 day culture age. The hydrophobicity of bactgerial film increased according to the culture age.

  • To find the effective combinations of blowing ratio and injection angle for a straight slot film cooling, film cooling characteristics was investigated using both flow visualization experiment and numerical simulation. Injection angles from $15^{\circ}\;to\;50^{\circ}$ and blowing ratios from 0.2 to 3.0 were selected for the simulation. Comparison between experimental and numerical results shows a good agreement, for the case of the injection angle of $30^{\circ}$ and blowing ratio ranging from 0.55 to 2.0. Film cooling effectiveness was found to be an increasing function of blowing ratio. The effects of injection angle became prominent as the blowing ratio increases. An interesting phenomenon was found for the injection angle of $15^{\circ}$ : the lowest film cooling effectiveness for the blowing ratio smaller than 1.0, but the highest film cooling effectiveness for the blowing ratio greater than 2.0 within wide range of downstream region. There exist optimum injection angles corresponding to maximum film cooling effectiveness : injection angle of $25^{\circ}$ for the blowing ratio from 0.2 to 2.0, and injection angle of $15^{\circ}$ for the blowing ratio of 3.0. Present study provides a design combination among film cooling effectiveness, blowing ratio, and injection angle.

  • 본 연구에서는 경사원주에서 발생하는 소용돌이 여기진동을 억제하기 위한 방 법으로 원주구조물 주위에서 발생하는 규칙적인 소용돌이 방출에 의한 여진력을 감소 시키도록 원주표면에 fin이나 wire를 부착시켜 단면형상을 바꾸는 방안을 실험적으로 검토한다. 즉, 밀폐순환식 유로을 이용하여 흐름에 경사되도록 탄성지지된 원주에 나선상의 fin과 wire를 감아, 경사각(.theta.)을 45, 60, 75, 90도, 나선피치각(.alpha.)을 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60도, 나선권수(n)를 1,2,3으로 하여, 진동특성을 실험적으로 조사하고, plain원주와 비교하여 제진효과를 확인하며, 더우기 나선핀 원주의 최적형 상을 구하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

목 안정화 운동이 경추성두통 환자의 근육특성과 근활성도 및 자세에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Neck Stabilizing Exercise on Muscle Characteristics, Muscle Activity and Posture in Patients with Cervicogenic Headache)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to provide an effective method of exercise therapy for patients with cervicogenic headache. Methods : The subjects were divided into the following two groups according to the intervention received: cervical stretch exercise (n=15, control group) cervix-stabilizing exercise (n=15, experimental group) tone (Hz) and stiffness (N/m) of the suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles were measured. T1 slope angle and neck tilt angle were measured. After the exercise program intervention, a greater amount of change in muscle tone and stiffness of suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group. Greater amount of change in posture was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group (p<0.05). Results : After the exercise program intervention, a greater amount of change in muscle tone and stiffness of suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group. Greater amount of change in posture was found in the experimental group, as compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion : The neck-stabilizing exercise were shown to be effective in decreasing the tone of the cervical muscles by stabilizing the cervical bone and improving muscle activity, and in improving the posture by decreasing muscle tone and stiffness.

장요근 침치료와 마사지로 호전된 하지불안증후군 환자 치험례 (Effect of Acupuncture and Massage on Iliopsoas Muscle in Patients with Restless Leg Syndrome : Case Report)

  • Restless legs syndrome(RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move legs to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. We report a new approach to improve RLS using acupuncture and massage on iliopsoas Muscle. The patients who have RLS were treated by acupuncture and massage on iliopsoas Muscle. We measured 3~6 times IRLS(Korean Versoin of International Restless Legs Scale), VAS(visual analogue scale), and angle(between the legs and the table) during the treatment period. After treatment, RLS symptoms decreased, In case 1, IRLS changed 34 to 10, VAS changed 8 to 2, angle changed 20 to 5. In case 2, IRLS changed 22 to 12, VAS changed 10 to 5, angle changed 15 to 10. In case 3, IRLS changed 30 to 9, VAS changed 8 to 1, angle changed 25 to 5. Acupuncture and massage on iliopsoas muscle for RLS was effective. To effective acupuncture treatment for RLS, more research is needed.

만성요통환자의 능동 하지직거상 동작 시 골반조절 방법에 따른 복부 근활성도와 요골반부 회전각도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Pelvic Control Method on Abdominal Muscle Activity and Lumbopelvic Rotation Angle during Active Straight Leg Raising in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of different methods of pelvic control on abdominal muscle activity and lumbopelvic rotation angle during active straight leg raising (ASLR) in patients with chronic back pain. Methods: The study participants were patients with low back pain (n = 30). They were instructed to perform ASLR with pelvic control, ASLR with pelvic belt, and ASLR only. Surface electromyography data were collected from the ipsilateral rectus femoris (IRF), ipsilateral internal oblique (IIO), contralateral external oblique (CEO), and ipsilateral rectus abdominal (IRA) muscles, and lumbopelvic rotation angle was measured using a motion analysis device. Results: Activation of all abdominal muscles was greater in the ASLR with pelvic control group than in the ASLR with pelvic belt and ASLR groups. The lumbopelvic rotation angle was lower in the ASLR with pelvic control group than in the other two groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that ALSR with pelvic control is an effective means of increasing abdominal muscle activity and reducing unwanted lumbopelvic rotation in patients with chronic low back pain. Controlling the pelvis using the opposite leg is an effective form of ASLR exercise for patients with chronic low back pain.

단축이방성 배향막이 코팅되어 있는 다층박막시료의 타원식 (Ellipsometric Expressions of Multilayered Substrate Coated with a Uniaxially Anisotropic Alignment Layer)

  • 다층박막이 있는 기층에 단축이방성 배향막이 코팅되어 있을 때 비스듬히 입사한 빛의 유효반사계수 표현들을 유도하였다. 유효반사계수들과 타원상수들을 다층박막의 미지상수들은 물론 단축이방성 배향막의 광학이방성의 크기와 광축의 방향 그리고 배향막의 두께로 표현하였다. 이를 바탕으로 배향막의 정상굴절률과 이상굴절률, 배향된 두께 그리고 광축의 방위각과 기울임각을 다층박막의 두께나 조성비 등과 함께 타원법이 가지고 있는 높은 수준의 측정 정밀도를 유지하며 기존의 모델링 분석방법으로 결정할 수 있도록 하였다.
