  • We investigated the most effective cutting interval for underwater nutrient removal through cut off the emergent part of hydrophytes at artificial vegetation island (AVR) which was installed for the purpose of water quality improvement in Lake Paldang. We divided the planting area of Phragmites japonica into three parts according to the cutting intervals. The shoot height and relative growth rate of P. japonica, nutrient contents and biomass of cut off P. japonica were measured at each cutting interval. The amount of nutrients which were removed through cut off at each cutting interval was calculated. P. japonica showed full growth, 80% and 60% of full growth before first cut off at three-months, two-months and one-month cutting interval condition respectively. Three-month cutting interval condition showed the largest biomass of cut off P. japonica and one-month cutting interval condition showed the least. However the cut off P. japonica showed the highest content of nutrients at one-month cutting interval condition and the least at three-month cutting interval condition. The amount of phosphorus and nitrogen removal at two-month cutting off condition is the largest among three cutting interval conditions indicating that cut off the emergent part of P. japonica every two months is the most effective to remove the nutrients from water at AVR in eutrophic lakes.

  • Generally, ordinary portland cement(OPC) is widely used for grouting to reduce permeability of ground under the foundations of structures. But, it is hard to be injected into the microscopic voids, fissures and crevices in soil or rock formation for the OPC material. Therefore new method what is called MSG(Micro Silica Grouting) has been developed recently to improve the weak point of the OPC material. In this case study, in order to verify performance of the MSG's water cut-off, trial injections were performed in rear of CIP(Cast in Place Pile) on the site A(weathered soil) and B(alluvial soil) that are constructed for the subway No. 9 nowadays. To take the proper grouting method of the MSG in the trial injecting, the injections are carried out for grouting types(constant pressure or fixed Quantity) and grouting methods(1.5shot or 2.0shot) and to confirm the effects of water cut-off and the injection range of the MSG, the tests of permeability and indicator(phenolphthalein) response were performed before and after the injection. Through the tests results, we could affirm the effects of water cut-off of the MSG and the injection range for the weathered and alluvial soil layers near the Han River. Finally we could make sure the application of the MSG method in actual construction under the layers.

  • Cut-off wall with a low permeability can be constructed to prevent groundwater seepage in spillway tunnel areas. Three spillway tunnels are constructed in Im-ha multipurpose dam region and three types of cut-off walls with a variety of directions and scales are designed. As a result of MODFLOW modeling to assess the effect of cut-off wall for three types, groundwater inflows to the tunnels range from 64.26 $m^3/day$ to 65.49 $m^3/day$ and also they through a cut-off wall section from a reservoir do from 44.08 $m^3/day$ to 45.31 $m^3/day$ and it does not show any significant difference among them. Therefore, a construction process and an environmental conservation rather than the effectiveness of cut-off wall need to be considered to select the best cut-off wall in this region.

  • When braced excavation with temporary retaining wall installation, is performed in loose sand with high ground water level boiling may be induced and considerable damage on the excavation works and structures in the vicinity can take place. Recently, for the purpose of reinforcement of ground and cut-off of ground water behind the temporary retaining wall, high pressure jet grouting is widely used. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of jet grouting on ground reinforcement and cut -off of the ground water behind temporary retaining walls for braced excavation. A series of both laboratory and field tests has been performed. The test results show that high pressure jet grouting has sufficient effects on reinforcement of stiffness of ground and retaining wall. The permeability of the improved ground was 10-f_ 10-3cm l s smaller than those of the original ground. Therefore, the effect on cut off of ground water behind temporary retaining walls could be improved by high pressure jet grouting method.

  • Recently, the construction of Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) is increasing because rock material resources are plenty in Korea. Bedding zone in the CFRD is necessary enough bearing capacity to support the concrete face slab uniformly and enough impermeability to prevent the loss of fine soils in case of leakage from the concrete slab face. Therefore, cut-off the water leakage in bedding zone securely is the key factor influencing the safety of CFRD. Tested materials satisfied with the specification of particle size distribution at the Bedding Zone area are chosen for conducting permeability tests, which are done to evaluate the property of cut off the materials. Based on the test results, the effects of cut off the materials are investigated by considering the coefficient of permeability, the soil particle distribution, and the dry unit weight. Especially, the relationships between coefficient of permeability with effective size(D10), dry unit weight, and weight passing percent the No.4 sieve are suggested, and also the variation of coefficient of permeability with time are proposed.

  • This study was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of postharvest ripening periods and packaging methods on maintaining the quality of fresh-cut winter squash. Winter squash (var. Bouchang) was ripened at $22^{\circ}C$ for 1 or 2 weeks after harvest. The samples were washed in tap water, sanitized in $100{\mu}L/L$ chlorine water, peeled, and cut into 16 parts. Samples were then vacuum packaged or non-vacuum packaged in $80{\mu}m$ nylon/polyethylene (Ny/PE) films and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 21 days. Results indicated that different postharvest ripening periods affected gas concentration, firmness, off-odor development, color, and overall quality of fresh-cut winter squash. Samples treated with 2-week ripening periods maintained quality with higher redness value and soluble solid content (SSC) and lower $CO_2$ concentration and off-odor development compared to samples treated with a 1-week ripening period. Non vacuum packaging was effective in increasing visual quality and reducing off-odor development. A combination treatment of 2-week ripening periods and non-vacuum packaging maintained good quality with the lowest off-odor development and the highest visual quality scores at the end of the storage period.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate a relationship between ultraviolet radiation and initial cell density (ICD) of microalgae using a floating marine photobioreactor (PBR). To examine the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight on biomass productivity as a function of ICD, 0.5-L floating PBRs covered with or without UV cut-off film were placed in an outdoor rectangular tank containing 200 L of water. At the lower ICDs, 0.01 and 0.05 g/L, biomass productivities in the PBRs without UV cut-off film decreased by $278{\pm}21%$ and $222{\pm}3%$ compared with those with the film, respectively. In contrast, the presence of UV cut-off film did not have a significant effect on biomass productivities at the higher ICDs, 0.25 and 1.25 g/L. When the differences in biomass productivity made by the UV cut-off film were plotted against the sum of cell projection area per light receiving area of the PBR, the results revealed that the inhibitory effect of UV on biomass productivity can be negligible when the sum of cell projection area is equal to the light receiving area of the PBR. These results show that photoinhibition caused by UV radiation could be eliminated via operating the PBR with a proper ICD.

  • To analyze and verify the effect of replacing thermal storage heater by a cascade cycle heat pump using midnight electricity was installed and tested at a customer's house in Wonju, Korea. The electric night storage heater is consist of 30kW electric heater and 2,700 liters of thermal storage water tank to supply hot water for warming house floor. The power for electric heater was cut off and hot water was only generated by cascade cycle heat pump. Current thermal storage water tank was not eliminated and electric heater wiring was modified. Some operation logic of the heat pump was also modified for proper operation. The required capacity of the heat pump and hot water temperature for given warming condition were estimated. The estimated capacity of heat pump was about 19kW and estimated hot water temperature for proper heating was at least $75^{\circ}C$.

  • The removal characteristics of cadmium in micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) were investigated by using an anionic biosurfactant, deoxycholic acid (DCA). The ultrafiltration experiments were performed in a batch-type stirred cell. The ultrafiltration membranes used were Millipore YM1, YM3, YM10, and YM30 which had a difference in molecular weight cut-off. The presence of cadmium ion in DCA solution tends to reduce the critical micell concentration considerably and increase the micell size. The molecular weight cut-off of ultrafiltration membrane had a minimal effect on cadmium removal whereas DCA/Cd ratio had a substantial influence. When DCA/Cd ratio was 3, the removal efficiency of cadmium was more than 99.6%. A relative flux, which is defined as ratio of the flux for a separation trial to that of deionized water run using the same piece of membrane, decreased in the order of YM3 > YM1 > YM10 > YM30.
