It is well known that the properties of concrete such as the compressive strength, water permeability, water tightness and durability are affected by micro-structure in hardened cement paste. Especially, for durability of concrete, watertightness of cementitious materials is the most critical property among various properties. Recently, many types of materials as organic and/or inorganic materials are used for watertightness of concrete. In this study, The effect of Stearic Acid at $0.5\;wt%{\sim}3.0\;wt%$ adding ratios on the hydration and watertightness property of cement were investigated. And we also discussed the changing of microstructure in hardened cement paste by addition of Stearic Acid. Cement paste with Stearic Acid showed improvement of watertightness by reducing of cement total pore volume and decomposition of Stearic Acid.
This article is concerned with the overview of the activated carbon fibers. Firstly, this review provides a comprehensive survey of the overall processes for the synthesis of the activated carbon fibers from the carbonaceous materials. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties such as pore structures and surface oxygen functional groups of the activated carbon fibers were discussed in detail. Finally, as electrochemical applications of the activated carbon fibers to electrode materials for electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), the electrochemical characteristics of the activated carbon fiber electrodes and the various methods to improve the capacitance and rate capability were introduced. In particular, the effect of pore length distribution (PLD) on kinetics of double-layer charging/discharging was discussed based upon the experimental and theoretical results in our work. And then we discussed in detail the applications of the activated carbon fibers to adsorbent materials for purification of liquid and gas.
Shaking table tests were performed to reproduce the dynamic behavior of estuary barrage and its subbase soil which can be potentially damaged during earthquake loading. For understanding the vibration effect to the ground during earthquake, the model was formulated with 1/300 scale of prototype estuary barrage and subbase soil. Scott and Iai(1989) proposed the law of the similarity for similar experimental conditions. The laboratory model shaking table test was conducted under the vibration condition of simulated earthquake of 0.154g. The horizontal displacement on the structure was measured during the shaking table test. The pore water pressure was also monitored for the underground layers of soil. The field horizontal displacement and the pore water pressure can be predicted by using the results of the laboratory shaking table test.
The commercial activated carbons are typically prepared by activation from coconut shell char or coal char containing lots of inorganic impurities. They also have pore structure and pore size distribution depending on nanostructure of precursor materials. In this study, two types of commercial activated carbons were applied for EDLC electrode by removing impurities with acid treatments, and controlling pore size distribution and contents of functional group with heat treatment. The effect of the surface functional groups on electrochemical performance of the activated carbon electrodes was investigated. The initial gravimetric and volumetric capacitance of coconut based activated carbon electrode which was acid treated by $HNO_3$ and then heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ were 90 F/g and 42 F/cc respectively showing 94% of charge-discharge efficiency. Such a good electrochemical performance can be possibly applied to the medium capacitance of EDLC.
This paper investigated the apparent chloride diffusivity of various concretes. Ten mixtures of concrete were initially prepared and tested to estimate diffusion property. The penetration depth and concentration of chloride ion were examined at the same water-binder ration. The binders were composed of normal portland cement, fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, and silica fume. From the results, it was concluded that using the mineral admixtures had a filling effect on the pore structure of cements matrix due to those pozzoanic reaction with the hydrates of cement, which increases the tortuosity of pore and makes large pore finer. And diffusivity of chloride is following: NPC100 > F10N90 > F30N70 > F20N80 > F20S05 > G30N70 > F10S05 > G30S05 > G30F15 > G50N50.
The purpose of tissue engineering is to repair or replace damaged tissues or organs by a combination of cells, scaffold, suitable biochemical and physio-chemical factors. Among the three components, the biodegradable scaffold plays an important role in cell attachment and migration. In this study, we designed 3D porous scaffold by Rapid Prototyping (RP) system and fabricated layer-by-layer 3D structure using Polycarprolactone (PCL) - one of the most flexible biodegradable polymer. Furthermore, the physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were evaluated by changing the pore size and the strand diameter of the scaffold. We changed nozzle diameter (strand diameter) and strand to strand distance (pore size) to find the effect on the mechanical property of the scaffold. And the surface morphology, inner structure and storage modulus of PCL scaffold were analyzed with SEM, Micro-CT and DMA.
After alumina sol was prepared by Yoldas process supported membranes were fabricated by adding ce and Re solution and SiO2 sol into alumina sol. The particle size of alumina sol was 11 nm and it was monodispersed transparent and stable for long time. The pore size of un-doped membrane started to increase to about 7,5nm at 1000$^{\circ}C$ and it was grown to twice (about 15nm) at 1100$^{\circ}C$ However the pore size of doped alumina was uniform to 1100$^{\circ}C$. The effect of retardation of grain growth was superior in SiO2 addition to that of Ce and Ru Because SiO2 doped samples transformed to needed-like phase and densified at 1200$^{\circ}C$ their application in membranes was limited. Ce and Ru doped sample showed vermicular structure identical to the un-doped ones at 1200$^{\circ}C$ But the particle size was smaller than that of un-doped ones.
Since most soils exist above the ground water table, negative pore pressure exist in unsaturated soils. Negative pore water pressure in unsaturated soil affects the soil structure and degree of saturation and it is important for accurate evaluation of unsaturate flow and behavior. This negative pore pressure is called a matric suction which causes an increased shear strength. Therefore, it is required that the effect of increase in the shear strength should be included in a geotechnical analysis. From the test result, the influence of net confining pressure and matric suction on the shear strength was analyzed and strength parameter was increased with matric suction increase and a unliner relationship was found to relate matric suction and shear strength.
Recently, nanoporous low-k materials using porogen (pore generating material) template method have gained much attraction due to the feasible advantage of dielectric constant decrease with the increase of porogen content, which is burning out and making air void by thermal curing. In nanoporous thin films, further, control of pore size and its distribution is very important to retain suitable thermal, mechanical and electrical properties. In this study, nanoporous low-k films were prepared with MTMS-BTMSE copolymer and porogen. The effect of interaction of copolymer matrix and porogen on pore size and distribution was comparatively to investigate with molecular structure and end functional group. The characterization of nanoporous thin film prepared was also performed using various techniques including NMR, GPC, Ellipsometer, FE-SEM, TGA, and FT-IR.
