The educational importance of natural environment of a region is increasing because it can serve as a vehicle to meet the new goal and trends of science education. The opportunity to learn about Korean natural environment in schools was investigated. The characteristics and unique patterns of Korean natural environment are not well reflected in the intended curriculum. School teachers mostly believe that education of Korean natural environment will greatly contribute to the students' learning of the subject matter they teach and environmental problems. However, they have limited opportunity to teach Korean natural environment. Various elective courses dealing with our natural environment should be provided in schools, especially for non-science majors. Out-of-school activities and facilities for Korean natural environment should be made available.

  • The accreditation process (AccP) is both an opportunity and a burden for medical schools-which one it becomes depends on how medical schools recognize and utilize the AccP. In other words, if a medical school recognizes the AccP only as a formal procedure or as a means for continuing medical education, it will be a burden for the medical school. However, if a medical school recognizes the real and positive value of the AccP, it can be both an opportunity and a tool for developing medical education. The educational value of the AccP is to improve the quality, equity, and efficiency of medical education, along with increasing the options of choice. In order for the AccP to contribute to the development of medical education, accrediting agencies and medical schools must first be recognized as part of an "educational alliance" working together towards common goals. Secondly, clear guidelines on the accreditation standards should be periodically reviewed and shared. Finally, a formative evaluation using self-evaluation as a system that can utilize the AccP as an opportunity to develop medical education must be introduced. This type of evaluation system could be developed through collaboration among medical schools, academic societies for medical education, and the accrediting authority.

  • The amendment to the Higher Education Act enforced on February 20, 2024, abolishing the traditional 2-year pre-med and 4-year medical school programs, marks a significant shift in medical education in Korea. The academic system reform is expected to be a driving force for large-scale curriculum revision, presenting an opportunity to introduce new educational innovations not only in curriculum but also in student assessment and support systems. Addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts among educators, students, and communities to navigate the evolving landscape of medical education effectively. In this regard, I will illustrate the recruitment and development of educators to implement the reform and the collaboration between communities and medical schools to innovate medical education.

  • As recruitment environment of hospitals has changed, employment opportunity for graduates of the hospital management majors has been reduced in larger hospitals. So, it is necessary to reestablish the status of an academic discipline to foster the professional managers of healthcare organizations. For this, curriculum contents and teaching methods might be improved. Although we need individual efforts of the society members for educational improvement, there is a need for organization and leadership of the society.
