  • Edges are a robust feature for object detection. In this paper, we present an edge-based background modeling method for the detection of moving objects. The edges in the image frames were mapped using robust Canny edge detector. Two edge maps were created and combined to calculate the ultimate moving-edge map. By selecting all the edge pixels of the current frame above the defined threshold of the ultimate moving edges, a temporary background-edge map was created. If the frequencies of the temporary background edge pixels for several frames were above the threshold, then those edge pixels were treated as background edge pixels. We conducted a performance comparison with previous works. The existing edge-based moving-object detection algorithms pose some difficulty due to the changes in background motion, object shape, illumination variation, and noises. The result of the performance evaluation shows that the proposed algorithm can detect moving objects efficiently in real-world scenarios.

  • As the essential techniques for the CD (Critical Dimension) measurement of the LCD pattern, there are various modules such as an optics design, auto-focus [1-4], and precise edge detection. Since the operation of image enhancement to improve the CD measurement repeatability, a ring type of the reflected lighting optics is devised. It has a simpler structure than the transmission light optics, but it delivers the same output. The edge detection is the most essential function of the CD measurements. The CD measurement is a vital inspection for LCDs [5-6] and semiconductors [7-8] to improve the production yield rate, there are numbers of techniques to measure the CD. So in this study, a new subpixel algorithm is developed through facet modeling, which complements the previous sub-pixel edge detection algorithm. Currently this CD measurement system is being used in LCD manufacturing systems for repeatability of less than 30 nm.

  • Seamless data integration in the CAx chain of the CAD/CAPP/CAM/CNC has been achieved to a high degree, but research concerning the transfer of data from conceptual sketches to a CAD system should be carried out further. This paper presents a method for reconstructing a 3D model from a freehand sketch. Sketch-based modeling research can be classified into gestural modeling methods and reconstructional modeling methods. This research involves the reconstructional modeling method. Here, Mitani's seminal work, designed for box-shaped 3D model using a predefined template, is improved by leveraging a relational template and specialized for automotive design. Matching between edge graphs of the relational template and the sketch is formulated and solved as the assignment problem using the feature vectors of the edges. Including the stroke preprocessing method required to generate an edge graph from a sketch, necessary procedures and relevant techniques for implementing the template-based modeling method are described. Examples from a working implementation are given.

  • Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are increasingly being used as an alternative or supplement to the gamma spectrometric method in determining the full energy peak efficiency (FEPE) necessary for radionuclide identification and quantification. The MC method is more advantageous than the experimental method in terms of both cost and time. Experimental calibration with standard sources is difficult, especially for specimens with unusually shaped geometries. However, with MC, efficiency values can be obtained by modeling the geometry as desired without using any calibration source. Modeling the detector with the correct parameters is critical in the MC method. These parameters given to the user by the manufacturer are especially the dimensions of the crystal and its front edge, the thickness of the dead layer, dimensions, and materials of the detector components. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the front edge geometry of the detector crystal on efficiency, so the effect of rounded and sharp modeled front edges on the FEPE was investigated for <300 keV with three different HPGe detectors in point and volume source geometries using PHITS MC code. All results showed that the crystal should be modeled as a rounded edge, especially for gamma-ray energies below 100 keV.

  • This paper presents a precise edge detection algorithm for the critical dimension (CD) measurement of a Thin-Film Transistor Liquid-Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) pattern. The sigmoid surface function is proposed to model the blurred step edge. This model can simultaneously find the position and geometry of the edge precisely. The nonlinear least squares fitting method (Levenberg-Marquardt method) is used to model the image intensity distribution into the proposed sigmoid blurred edge model. The suggested algorithm is verified by comparing the CD measurement repeatability from high-magnified blurry and noisy TFT-LCD images with those from the previous Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) based sub-pixel edge detection algorithm and error function fitting method. The proposed fitting-based edge detection algorithm produces more precise results than the previous method. The suggested algorithm can be applied to in-line precision CD measurement for high-resolution display devices.

  • A growth of mobile and wireless networking technologies have enabled mobile ad hoc networks applicable to a wide range of areas. This paper analyzes dynamics of network transport performance with respect to dynamics of network states especially for the mobile ad hoc networks called MANET. The edge cost based modeling methodology is adopted for the analysis, which can express well the characteristics of MANET. In this methodology the network state at arbitrary time can be specified as one of four edge states. We extracts ten target network scenarios for the simulation analysis by employing not only the Real Edge/Infinity Edge concept but also interworking functionality between different transport protocols. Then we could acquire from simulation of them with the DEVSim++ engine that the more sorts of transport protocols and the more number of interworking nodes are included in the network, the more contribution is for improving network transport performance.

  • This paper proposes 3D facial modeling system without using 3D scanner and camera or expensive software. This system enables efficient 3D facial modeling to cost reduction and effort saving for natural facial modeling. It detects edges of component of face using edge detection based on fuzzy logic from any 2D image of front face. It was mapped fitting position with 3D standard face model by detected edge more correctly. Also this system generates 3D face model more easily through floating and flexible control and texture mapping after fitting that connection of control point on detected edge from 2D image and mesh of 3D standard face model.

  • The paper deals with a procedure for constructing a composite surface interpolating a polygonal curve mesh defined from 3D scattered points. The procedure consists of a poly-angulation, construction of a curve net, and interpolation of the curve net. The poly-angulation contains a stage that changes a triangular edge net obtained from a triangulation into a poly-angular edge net. A curve net is constructed by replacing edges on the edge net with cubic Bezier curves. Finally, inside of an n-sided polygon is interpolated by n subdivided triangular subpatches. The method interpolates given point data with relatively few triangular subpatches. For an n-sided polygon, our method constructs an interpolant with n subdivided triangular subpatches while the existing triangular surface modeling needs 3(n-2) subpatches. The obtained surface is composed of quartic triangular patches which are $G^1$-continuous to adjacent patches.
