  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of stiffened element and edge stiffener in the behaviour and flexural strength of built-up cold-formed steel beams. An experimental and analytical analysis of CFS channel sections in four different geometries is conducted, including simple channel sections, a stiffened channel section with or without edge stiffeners. Nonlinear finite element models are developed using finite element analysis software package ANSYS. The FEA results are verified with the experimental results. Further, the finite element model is used for parametric studies by varying the depth, thickness, and the effect of stiffened element, edge stiffener and their interaction with compression flanges on stiffened built-up cold-formed steel beams with upright edge stiffeners. In addition, the flexural strength predicted by the finite element analysis is compared with the design flexural strength calculated by using the North American Iron and Steel Institute Specifications for cold-formed steel structures (AISI: S100-2007) and suitable suggestion is made.

  • UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) photogrammetry has recently emerged as a means of obtaining highly precise and rapid spatial information due to its cost-effectiveness and high efficiency. However, current procedures or regulations for quantitative quality verification methods and certification processes for UAV-images are insufficient. In addition, the current verification method for image quality is not evaluated by an MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) analysis or edge response analysis, which can analyze the degree of contrast including image resolution, and only relies on the GSD (Ground Sample Distance) analysis. Therefore, in this study, the edge response analysis using a Slanted edge target was performed along with GSD analysis to confirm the necessity of analyzing edge response analysis in UAV-images quality analysis. Furthermore, a Matlab GUI-based software tool was developed to help streamline the edge response analysis. As a result, we confirmed the need for edge response analysis since the outputs of the edge response analysis from the same GSD had significantly different outcomes. Additionally, we found that the quality of the edge response analysis of UAV-images is proportional to the performance of the camera mounted on the UAV.

  • In modern society, the use of the image processing field is increasing rapidly due to the 4th industrial revolution and the development of IoT technology. In particular, edge detection is widely used in various fields as an essential preprocessing process in image processing applications such as image classification and object detection. Conventional methods for detecting an edge include a Sobel edge detection filter, a Roberts edge detection filter, a Prewitt edge detection filter, Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG), and the like. However, existing methods have the disadvantage of showing somewhat insufficient performance of edge detection characteristics in a low-light level environment with low contrast. Therefore, this paper proposes an edge detection algorithm based on contrast analysis to increase edge detection characteristics even in low-light level environments.

  • This paper presents the analytical investigation pertaining to the local buckling behavior of orthotropic open section thin-walled compression members with asymmetric edge stiffeners. In the analysis, 3 different cases of the second moment of inertia are considered to find the asymmetric edge stiffener effect on the local buckling strength. The analytical study results are presented in the graphical form so that the edge stiffener effects on the local buckling strength can be easily found.

  • This article introduces ADAPT Corporation's latest software product for the integrated multistory analysis and design of concrete buildings, ADAPT Edge. Edge uniquely packages user-friendly modeling of multistory buildings, accurate gravity and lateral analysis, post-tensioning, and detailed slab and beam design, all in one software package. The benefits of Edge over traditional concrete design software are explained.

  • The propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate (${ \sigma}$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edges can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Preliminary results are presented for single and twin premixed hydrocarbon edge-flames in terms of the effects on $U_{edge}$. A low-${\sigma}$ extinction limit has been discovered for all mixtures tested but further analysis is necessary for full characterization since sufficiently $high-{\sigma}$ leads to an apparent stability limit. Propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le. Future work will focus on completing the premixed hydrocarbon edge-flame analysis and include investigations into non-premixed edge-flames and edge-flames composed of fuels such as hydrogen ($H_2$) with significantly lower Le.

  • Recent developments in underwater image recognition methods have received large attention by the ocean engineering researchers. In this paper, an improved bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) approach is employed to decompose the given underwater image into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and residual. We developed a joint algorithm based on BEMD and Canny operator to extract multi-pixel edge features at multiple scales in IMFs sub-images. So the multiple pixel edge extraction is an advantage of our approach; the other contribution of this method is the realization of the bi-dimensional sifting process, which is realized utilizing regional-based operators to detect local extreme points and constructing radial basis function for curve surface interpolation. The performance of the multi-pixel edge extraction algorithm for processing underwater image is demonstrated in the contrast experiment with both the proposed method and the phase congruency edge detection.

  • In this paper, the construction of secondary reaction plate is analyzed by 3-D Finite Element Method(3-D FEM) to consider the influence of its variation on the transverse edge effect of LIM. The effective 3-D analysis model for considering the transverse edge effect caused by the finite widths of the primary and the secondary is proposed. The simple method measuring the transverse edge effect by using the patterns of currents induced in the secondary reaction plate is also proposed. With this effective analysis method, various models of secondary reaction plate with overhang and cap has been analyzed to consider the relationship between the construction of secondary reaction plate and the transverse edge effect of LIM.

  • In this paper, thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis of the effect of tool edge radius on cutting process are performed. The thermo-viscoplastic cutting model is capable of dealing with free chip geometry and chip-tool contact length. The coupling with thermal effects is also considered. Orthogonal cutting experiments are performed for 0.2% carbon steel with tools having 3 different edge radii and the tool forces are measured. The experimental results are discussed in comparison with the results of the FEM analysis. From the study, we confirm that this cutting model can well be applied to the cutting process considered the tool edge radius and that a major causes of the "size effect" is the tool edge radius. With numerical analysis, the effects of the tool edge radius on the stress distributions in workpiece, the temperature distributions in workpiece and tool, and the chip shape are investigated.estigated.

  • DDA (Discontinuous Deformation Anlaysis) is one of the latest numerical analysis which has merits of both FEM and DEM. In this research a new edge-to-edge contact algorithm was applied on DDA. With adoption of new edge-to-edge contact state definition, sub-algorithm was improved about open-close iteration, contact state judge, contact detecting, and friction forces acting on joints. Newly applied DDA was verified based on two different cases. The DDA results show good agreement with numerically predicted one.
