The influence of vertical eddy viscosity to the nonlinear interaction of tidal current and wind-induced current is examined using a point model. A zero-equation turbulence model is derived by simplifying the q$^2$-q$^2$1 turbulence model under the assumption that the generation of turbulence kinetic energy is balanced with its dissipation and is further modified to include the depth of frictional influence properly The zero-equation turbulence model is derived and the possibility of resonance in the presence of Coriolis effect is suggested. The amplitudes of tidal currents remain the same regardless of the applied wind stress, but the over-tide component is generated due to the nonlinear interaction of tidal current and wind-induced current. Significant changes in the vertical profile of wind-induced currents can occur according to tide-induced background turbulence. The turbulence model can give rise to misleading results when applied to the wind-driven circulation in the tide-dominated sea such as Yellow Sea unless the tide-induced background turbulence is adequately included in the parameterization of vertical eddy viscosity.

Fine grid computations were attempted to analyze the turbulent flows in the near wall low Reynolds number region and the numerical analyses were incorporated by a finite-volume discretization with full find grid system and low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model was employed in this region. For the improvement of low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model, modification coefficient of eddy viscosity $f_{\mu}$ was derived as a function of turbulent Reynolds number $R_{+}$ and nondimensional length $y^{+}$ from the concept of two length scales of dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. The modification coefficient $f_{\epsilon}$ in .epsilon. transport equation was also derived theoretically. In the turbulent kinetic energy equation, pressure diffusion term was added in order to consider low Reynolds number region effect. The main characteristics of this low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model were founded as : (1) In high Reynolds number region, the present model has limiting behavior which approaches to the high Reynolds number model. (2) Present low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model dose not need additional empirical constants for the transport equations of turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy in order to consider wall effect. Present low Reynolds number turbulence model was tested in the pipe flow and obtained improved results in velocity profiles and Reynolds stress distributions compared with those from other k-.epsilon. models.s.s.

The turbulent fluctuations of temperature and two components of velocity have been measured with hot- and cold-wires in the Thermally Stratified Wind Tunnel(TSWT). Using the fin-tube heat exchanger type heaters and the neural network control algorithm, both stable ($dT/dz=109.4^{\circ}C$) and unstable ($dT/dz=-49.1^{\circ}C$) stratifications were realized. An ambient air jet was issued normally into the cross flow($U_{\infty}=1.0 m/s$) from a round nozzle(d = 6 mm) flushed at the bottom waII of the wind tunnel with the velocity ratio of $5.8(U_{jet}/U_{\infty})$. The characteristics of turbulent dispersion in the cross flow jet are found to change drastically depending on the thermal stratification. Especially, in the unstable condition, the vertical velocity fluctuation increases very rapidly at downstream of jet. The fluctuation velocity spectra and velocity-temperature cospectra along the jet centerline were obtained and compared. In the case of stable stratification, the heat flux cospectra changes Its sign from a certain point at the far field because of the restratification phenomenon. It is inferred that the main reason in the difference between the vertical heat fluxes is caused by the different length scales of the large eddy motions. The turbulent kinetic energy and scalar dissipation rates were estimated using partially non-isotropic and isotropic turbulent approximation. In the unstable case, the turbulent energy dissipation decreases more rapidly with the downstream distance than in the stable case.
The Global-Korean aviation Turbulence Guidance (G-KTG) system is developed using the operational Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System of Korea Meteorological Administration with 17-km horizontal grid spacing. The G-KTG system provides an integrated solution of various clear-air turbulence (CAT) diagnostics and mountain-wave induced turbulence (MWT) diagnostics for low [below 10 kft (3.05 km)], middle [10 kft (3.05 km) - 20 kft (6.10 km)], and upper [20 kft (6.10 km) - 50 kft (15.24 km)] levels. Individual CAT and MWT diagnostics in the G-KTG are converted to a 1/3 power of energy dissipation rate (EDR). 12-h forecast of the G-KTG is evaluated using 6-month period (2016.06~2016.11) of in-situ EDR observation data. The forecast skill is calculated by area under curve (AUC) where the curve is drawn by pairs of probabilities of detection of "yes" for moderate-or-greater-level turbulence events and "no" for null-level turbulence events. The AUCs of G-KTG for the upper, middle, and lower levels are 0.79, 0.69, and 0.63, respectively. Comparison of the upper-level G-KTG with the regional-KTG in East Asia reveals that the forecast skill of the G-KTG (AUC = 0.77) is similar to that of the regional-KTG (AUC = 0.79) using the Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System with 12-km horizontal grid spacing.
The most common approach for computing engineering flow problems at high Reynolds number is still the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations based on turbulence models with wall functions. The recently developed generalized wall functions blending between the wall-limiting viscous and the outer logarithmic relations ensure a smooth transition of flow quantities across two regions. The performances and convergence properties of widely used turbulence models with wall functions that are applicable for turbulence kinetic energy (TKE), turbulent and specific dissipation rates, and eddy viscosity are presented through a series of near wall flow simulations. The present results show that RNG k-𝜖 model should be carefully applied with small tolerance to get the stable solution when the first grid lies in the buffer layer. The standard k-𝜖 and RNG k-𝜖 models are not sensitive to the selection of wall functions for both TKE and eddy viscosity, while the k-ω SST model should be applied together with kL-wall function for TKE and nutUB-wall functions for eddy viscosity to ensure accurate and stable boundary conditions. The applications to a backward-facing step flow at Re=155,000 reveal that the reattachment length is reasonably well predicted on appropriately refined mesh by all turbulence models, except the standard k-𝜖 model which about 13% underestimates the reattachment length regardless of the grid refinement.

The Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) concept has been applied to numerically simulate the combustion processes and pollutant formation in the direct injection diesel engine. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the RIF concept has the capabilities to predict the auto-ignition and subsequent flame propagation in the diesel engine combustion chamber as well as to effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of soot formation, NOx formation including thermal NO path, prompt and nitrous 70x formation, and reburning process. Special emphasis is given to the turbulent combustion model which properly accounts for vaporization effects on the mixture fraction fluctuations and the pdf model. The results of numerical modeling using the RIF concept are compared with experimental data and with numerical results of the commonly applied procedure which the low-temperature and high-temperature oxidation processes are represented by the Shell ignition model and the eddy dissipation model, respectively. Numerical results indicate that the RIF approach including the vaporization effect on turbulent spray combustion process successfully predicts the ignition delay time and location as well as the pollutant formation.

A numerical study was carried out to analyze the effect of flow distribution of stirred part and plug flow part on combustion efficiency at the coal gasification process in an entrained bed coal reactor. The model of computation was based on gas phase eulerian balance equations of mass and momentum. The solid phase was described by lagrangian equations of motion. The $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to calculate the turbulence flow and eddy dissipation model was used to describe the gas phase reaction rate. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step parallel two reaction model was employed for the devolatilization process of a high volatile bituminous Kideco coal. The computations agreed well with the experiments, but the flame front was closer to the burner than the measured one. The flow distribution of a stirred part and a plug flow part in a reactor was a function of the magnitude of recirculation zone resulted from the swirl. The combustion efficiency was enhanced with decreasing stirred part and the maximum value was found around S=1.2, having the minimum stirred part. The combustion efficiency resulted from not only the flow distribution but also the particle residence time through the hot reaction zone of the stirred part, in particular for the weak swirl without IRZ(internal recirculation zone) and the long lifted flame.
In order to analyze the sensitivity on the pulverized coal flames of the several variables, a numerical study was conducted at the gasification process. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas lagrangian approach is used for the solid phase. Turbulence is modeled using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The turbulent combustion incorporates eddy dissipation model. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step two-reaction model was employed for the devolatilization of Kideco coal. In pulverized flame of long liftoff height, the initial turbulent intensity seriously affects the position of flame front. The radiation heat transfer and wall heat loss ratio distort the temperature distributions along the reactor wall, but do not influence the reactor performance such as coal conversion, residence time and flame front position. The primary/secondary momentum ratio affects the position of flame front, but the coal burnout is only slightly influenced. The momentum ratio is a variable only associated with the flame stabilization such as flame front position. The addition of steam in the reactor has a detrimental effect on all the aspects, particularly reactor temperature and coal burnout.

A numerical study on swirling pulverized coal combustion in an axisymmetric enclosure is carried out by applying the 2-phase weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) approach with the discrete ordinate method (DOM) to model the radiative heat transfer equation. In the radiative transfer equation, the same polynomial equation and coefficients for weighting factors as those for gas are adopted for the coal/char particles as a function of partial pressure and particle temperature. The Eulerian balance equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species mass fractions are adopted with the standard and RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, whereas the Lagrangian approach is used for the particulate phase. The eddy-dissipation model is employed for the reaction rate for gaseous mixture, and the single-step and two-step first-order reaction model for the devolatilization process for coal. Special attention is given to establish the thermal boundary conditions on radiative transfer equation By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the radiation model used here is confirmed and found to provide an alternative for simulating the radiative transfer.
Investigating coal combustion in a large-scale boiler using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) requires a combination of flow and reaction models. These models include a number of rate constants which are often difficult to determine or validate for particular coals or furnaces. Nonetheless, CFD plays an important role in developing new combustion technologies and improving the operation. In this study, the model selection and rate constants for coal devolatilization, char conversion, and turbulent reaction were evaluated for a commercial wall-firing boiler. The influence of devolatilization and char reaction models was found not significant on the overall temperature distribution and heat transfer rate. However, the difference in the flame shapes near the burners were noticeable. Compared to the coal conversion models, the rate constant used for the eddy dissipation rate of gaseous reactions had a larger influence on the temperature and heat transfer rate. Based on the operation data, a value for the rate constant was recommended.
