  • This paper proposes two kinds of the eddy current brake which uses permanent magnet. The one, like multipolar excitation consists of hexahedron shape of a segmented permanent magnetic and iron situated in the air-gap. The other, like multipolar excitation consists of only a segmented permanent magnetic. We use a finite element method to compute the flux distribution in the model. Also, we use the Galerkin-FEM with linear interpolation function may oscillate between the adjacent nodes to calculate the braking and attraction force. The advantages of the Halbach array are discussed.

  • This study proposes a new conceptual Hybrid Electric Brake System (HEBS) which overcomes the problems of the conventional hydraulic brake system. The HEBS uses the contactless brake system when vehicle speed is high to obtain superior braking force by eddy current, which is induced in pole area by magnetic flux through a rotating conductive disk. On the contrary, when a vehicle speed is low, contact type brake system such as conventional hydraulic brake system makes higher braking force.   • In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to combine properly the various brakes. The prototype of Korean high speed train (KHST) has been designed, fabricated and tested by the domestic researchers. It has adopted a combined electrical brakes, such as rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake, and mechanical brakes composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, the performances and control algorithms of braking system have been reviewed by the experimental method.

  • To achieve adequate brake performance in high-speed trains the brake system should : ${\bullet}$ offer high reliability and high availability, ${\bullet}$ permit deceleration of the train with as little wear as possible, and ${\bullet}$ display good control characteristics with, if possible, infinitely variable control of the braking effort. For these reasons, high-speed train is to be equipped with three different and largely independent brake system : ${\bullet}$ a regenerative brake with regenerative feedback in the driven cars, ${\bullet}$ a linear eddy-current brake in the nondriven cars and ${\bullet}$ a pneumatic disc brake in all cars.   • The technical improvement of servo system, it is required to study on robust control method in company. It needs to study on brake system that has constant torque-speed performance as load variation. In this paper, braking torque characteristics of eddy current braker between electromagnet stator and rotating disk are analyzed. The torque-speed characteristics and proper disk construction are presented. From the computer simulation results, it was found that eddy current braking torque is linear or approximately constant over the desired speed range depending on the rotor material, disk construction, pole number and pole displacement of stator. The relationship of these parameters are confirmed by experimental result.

  • Brake system using eddy current is adequate to obtain safe braking force in high speed transportation system and electric vehicle etc. In this paper, we propose the new type eddy current braker using Halbach array. which compared with the conventional permanent magnet array. The airgap flux density of Halbach array is higher 25% then conventional array, therefor we can predict that braking force is much large 1.56 times then conventional array.

  • A magnetic brake system was fabricated for use with small wind turbines. The torque of the pivot did not change as the speed of revolution increased when the magnetic array disc was far from the salient of the aluminum housing, the torque abruptly increased as the magnetic array approached the salient of the aluminum housing. The torque increased as a quadratic function of the speed of revolution when the distance between the magnetic array and the datum point was 60 mm.

  • Permanent magnet is applied to the mover of eddy current braking system for high speed. On the analytical 2D field solutions considering end effect, this paper deals with the magnetic field, and forces according to the secondary magnet array. Comparisons between analytical results and experimental results are also presented.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the rotor of an ac motor. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of a ac motor with HTS bulk rotor. The rotor of a conventional squirrel cage induction motor was replaced with cylinder type YBCO bulk. Height and outer diameter of the HTS bulk was 15mm and 46mm, respectively. Eddy current brake using aluminium disk was used to measure the torque of the HTS motor. No load test, locked rotor test and load test were performed to examine the characteristics of the HTS motor. Test results show the motor can rotate at synchronous speed without any special starting circuit. Maximum output power of the constructed HTS motor was 408W.
