  • As it recently appears that Life Cycle Cost Analysis may be considered as new methodology for economic valuation of infrastructure many researches have been made to assess LCC(Life Cycle Cost) of each facility based on a reasonable methods. In general, LCC is composed of construction cost and expected maintenance repair cost. And especially, maintenance repair cost must be estimated to enhance the reliability through systematic and reasonable methods. However in Korea, because high speed railway steel bridges are recently constructed no direct statistical data are available for the account of the maintenance cost and then their maintenance characteristics are not linear yet. Therefore, the approach proposed in the paper utilizes a theoretical determination and degradation of the corrosion and fatigue of the bridges based on Rahgozar et al.(2006)'s model on fatigue notch factor considering into the corrosion to incorporate the corrosion effect into the fatigue strength reduction model. And then, the corresponding probability of failure is calculated in terms of the reliability index using S-N curve to formulate the fatigue limit state. Therefore, this paper proposes the minimum Life Cycle Cost through optimum maintenance plan analysis of high-speed railway steel bridges under construction. Finally, this paper reviews the proposed model in oder to confirm the applicability and feasibility by appling it to high speed railway steel bridges under construction

  • A gutter-shaped U grating is a facility that is installed at the sides of a road to provide pedestrians with a rainwater-free road. The previous studies on this facility focused mainly on the progress of the efforts that are being made to improve its performance and interception efficiency so as to prevent damages in regional areas due to the heavy rains caused by climate change. The studies on its maintenance, however, are still inadequate. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze and compare the life cycle costs and performance evaluations of the steel and magic gratings, which are installed in apartments. The results of the study show that the replacement period and rate of gratings differ depending on where they are installed. The initial capital investment cost of a magic grating installed at a road where many vehicles pass is quite high, but in terms of its maintenance and entire-life-cycle costs, its total expenses are lower than those of a steel grating. The results of this study are expected to serve as preliminary data for the selection of an adequate grating that is suitable for particular places in the design phase of construction projects.

  • This study aims to provide useful information when making a decision for the environmental and economic efficiency assessment of infrastructure, based on Life Cycle Assessment(LCA). It estimates environmental cost on environmental pollutants that are possible to happen by locations and by types of emergency spillway for korean multipurpose dam, which is selected as a study case. For this purpose, this study examines the theories of LCA and Contingent Valuation Method(CVM) and suggests an analysis model of environmental cost. To apply the suggested analysis model of environmental cost for infrastructure to the case study of emergency spillway at the multipurpose dam, this study calculates environmental load on environmental pollutants that generate during life cycle, converts it to a cost to predict environmental cost, evaluates environmental economy of emergency spillway by the estimated result, and draws the optimum alternative that is environmental-friendly and economic.

  • As the use of new and renewable energy is one of the ways by which the exhaustion of fossil fuels and the other existing environmental problems can be addressed, a policy of spreading information regarding it and of conducting R&D related to it is currently being implemented in advanced countries. In the construction field, the concept of "green building" was born, and the application of this concept has increased, with the end in view of achieving energy savings, resource savings, and recycling, and of conserving the natural environment. In this context, the government of Korea amended the "Law on the Development, Use, and Promotion of New and Recycled Energy" in 2004, which contains 11 provisions related to new and renewable energy and their sources, including solar and geothermal energy as well as sunlight, water, rainfall, and organisms. Since solar-energy should be used instead of fossil fuels by converting sunlight directly into electricity, many researches on this subject are in progress. There are few researches, however, employing the economic approach to the subject. Thus, in this study, an economic assessment of the solar-energy system was conducted using both life cycle cost (LCC) analysis and sensitivity analysis. The results of the LCC analysis show that the solar-energy system will become economically better than the fossil fuel system after 16 years, although the initial construction cost of the solar-energy system is higher than that of the fossil fuel system. The results of this study are expected to be used in selecting an eco-friendly and economical solar-energy system when the construction of a green building is planned.

  • The life-cycle prediction of the sub-module which is the unit system of MMC is very important from the viewpoint of maintenance and economic feasibility of HVDC system. However, the life-cycle prediction that considers only the type, number and combination of parts is a generalized result that does not take into account the operating condition of the sub-module, and may significantly differ from the life-cycle of the actual one. Therefore, we design a fault tree for the purpose of reflecting the operation characteristics of the full-bridge sub-module and apply the MIL-HDBK-217F to the failure rate of the basic event to predict the life-cycle of the full-bridge sub-module. It compares the life-cycle expectancy of the conventional failure rate analysis with the proposed fault-tree analysis and compares the lifetime according to whether the redundancy of the full-bridge sub-module is considered.

  • The term “energy saving is economical” is appropriate for the national view point and for design and assessment of one system, but not appropriate when choosing the system by comparing alternative systems in the early design step. Sometimes, non-energy saving system is more economical than energy saving system because of the price of electricity, gas or oil, which are used for operating the air conditioning system. Therefore, when designing a system, we should consider the efficient alternatives through economic assessment of energy saving method. However, research on non-operating number control of the system is not sufficient because it is more common to use operating number control of the system for most economic assessment of air conditioning systems. For this reason, this research can provide the economic operating number control method as basic design data. The data obtained through analysis of life cycle cost based on amount of yearly energy use, are produced by system simulation of HASP/ACLD/8501 and HASP/ACSS/8502 for six alternative heating$.$cooling systems based on seasonal air conditioning system, which is widely used for medium and large size office buildings in Busan.

  • Up until recently, the energy and the economic analysis of a cogeneration system have been implemented by a manual calculation that is based on monthly thermal loads of buildings. In this study, a cogeneration system modeling validation with a detail building energy simulation, eQUEST, for a building energy and cost prediction has been implemented. By analyzing the hourly building electricity and thermal loads, it enables users to decide proper cogeneration system capacity and to estimate more accurate building energy consumption. eQUEST also verified the energy analysis when the heat pump system is integrated with the cogeneration system. The mechanical system configuration benefits from the high efficiency heat pump system while avoiding the building electricity demand increase. Economic analysis such as LCC (Life Cycle Cost) method is carried out to verify economical benefits of the system by applying actual utility rates of KEPCO(Korea Electricity Power COmpany) and KOGAS(KOrea GAS company).

  • Since the mid-1990s, Korea has been aging rapidly. At the same time, real interest rates have declined sharply. This paper studies whether population aging has contributed to the real interest rate decrease in Korea. We first present empirical evidence that increases in life expectancy and the old-age-dependency ratio, and a fall in population growth, i.e., the population aging, decrease real interest rates. Then we calibrate a life-cycle model to capture the features of the old-age-dependency ratio and population growth in Korea, and show that population aging accounts for about one third of the fall in real interest rates between 1995 and 2018. Furthermore, according to simulation results, increased life expectancy is more important than decreased population growth in affecting the real interest rate decrease during the period.
