The probabilistic bearing capacity of a strip footing placed on the edge of a purely cohesive reinforced soil slope is computed by combining lower bound finite element limit analysis technique with random field method and Monte Carlo simulation technique. To simulate actual field condition, anisotropic random field model of undrained soil shear strength is generated by using the Cholesky-Decomposition method. With the inclusion of a single layer of reinforcement, dimensionless bearing capacity factor, N always increases in both deterministic and probabilistic analysis. As the coefficient of variation of the undrained soil shear strength increases, the mean N value in both unreinforced and reinforced slopes reduces for particular values of correlation length in horizontal and vertical directions. For smaller correlation lengths, the mean N value of unreinforced and reinforced slopes is always lower than the deterministic solutions. However, with the increment in the correlation lengths, this difference reduces and at a higher correlation length, both the deterministic and probabilistic mean values become almost equal. Providing reinforcement under footing subjected to eccentric load is found to be an efficient solution. However, both the deterministic and probabilistic bearing capacity for unreinforced and reinforced slopes reduces with the consideration of loading eccentricity.

Due to the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit around the Sun and the obliquity of the Earth rotation axis against ecliptic frame, the apparent solar time differs from the mean solar time. Since the solar array of a GEO satellite makes a turn in mean solar day, the Sun pointing error of solar array is introduced over the year due to the equation of time. In this paper, efficient methods of compensating the equation of time to keep the solar array pointing the Sun are presented and verified with realistic simulation.

We present high-resolution radial velocity (RV) measurements of K2 giant HD 66141 from December 2003 to January 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). We find that the RV measurements for HD 66141 exhibit a periodic variation of 480 days with a semi-amplitude of 146 m/s. We do not find the correlation between RV variations and a chromospheric activity indicator (H line). The Hipparcos photometry as well as bisector velocity span (BVS) also do not show any obvious correlations with RV variations. Thus, Keplerian motion is the most likely explanation, which suggests that the RV variations arise from an orbital motion. Assuming a possible stellar mass of 1.5 $M{\odot}$, for HD 66141, we obtain a minimum mass for the planetary companion of 7.4 MJup with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.4 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.07. We support that planet occurrence rate around evolved stars is more than 10 % (Dollinger et al. 2009) as well as more massive stars do form significantly more massive planetary companions (Johnson et al. 2007; Lovis & Mayor 2007; Dollinger et al. 2009).

In this paper, the general research on the analysis of the vibration due to magnetic exciting force in the small brushless DC(BLDC) motor, which is used in the Digital Versatile Disk(DVD) ROM driving system, is performed. The first part of the study is the analysis of the magnetic exciting force in the air gap region. As a verification of the exciting force by numerical analysis, the magnetic exciting force distribution in the air gap region is computed by using Reluctance Network Method(RNM). In addition, the effect of the eccentricity on the magnetic exciting force is discussed. The other part of the research is the structural analysis of the rotor structure of the BLDC motor. The matural mode analysis of the rotor structure is performed, and the vibration response due to magnetic exciting force is found. As a result of the procedures, the basic estimation of the effect of the magnetic exciting force on the vibration of BLDC motor is suggested.

Now, on developing COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) has solar panel on the south panel only. Therefore, the wheel off-loading has to be performed periodically to reduce a induced momentum energy by a asymmetric solar panel. One of two East/West station keeping maneuver to correct simultaneously longitude and eccentricity, orbit corrections may be performed during one of the two wheel off-loading manoeuvres per day to get enough observation time for meteorological and ocean sensor. In this paper, we applied a linearized orbit maneuver equation to acquire maneuver time and delta-V. Nonlinear simulation for the station keeping is performed and compared with general station keeping strategy for fuel reduction.
In recent years, the use of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) columns has been the interests of many structural engineers. The present study is an attempt to study the monotonic and cyclic behaviours of STCC columns. For the monotonic behaviours, a series of tests on STCC stub columns (twenty one), and beam-columns (twenty) were carried out. The main parameters varied in the tests are: (1) column section types, circular and square; (2) tube diameter (or width) to thickness ratio, from 40 to 162, and (3) load eccentricity ratio (e/r), from 0 to 0.5. For the cyclic behaviours, the test parameters included the sectional types and the axial load level (n). Twelve STCC column specimens, including 6 specimens with circular sections and 6 specimens with square sections were tested under constant axial load and cyclically increasing flexural loading. Comparisons are made with predicted column strengths and flexural stiffness using the existing codes. It was found that STCC columns exhibit very high levels of energy dissipation and ductility, particularly when subjected to high axial loads. Generally, the energy dissipation ability of the columns with circular sections was much higher than those of the specimens with square sections. Comparisons are made with predicted column strengths and flexural stiffness using the existing codes such as AIJ-1997, AISCLRFD- 1994, BS5400-1979 and EC4-1994.
This paper presents a detailed parametric study, conducted using finite element tools to cover a range of several geometric and material parameters, on the behaviour of thin-walled partially encased composite (PEC) columns. The PEC columns studied herein are composed of thin-walled built-up H-shaped steel sections with concrete infill cast between the flanges. Transverse links are provided between the opposing flanges to improve resistance to local buckling. The parametric study is confined to eccentrically-loaded columns subjected to major axis bending only. The parameters that were varied include the overall column slenderness ratio (L/d), load eccentricity ratio (e/d), link spacing-to-depth ratio (s/d), flange plate slenderness ratio (b/t) and concrete compressive strength ($f_{cu}$). The overall column slenderness ratio was chosen to be the primary variable with values of 5, 10 and 15. Other parameters were varied within each case of L/d ratio. The effects of the selected parameters on the behaviour of PEC columns were studied with respect to the failure mode, peak axial load, axial load versus average axial strain response, axial load versus lateral displacement response, moment versus lateral displacement behaviour and the axial load-moment interaction diagram. The results of the parametric study are presented in the paper and the influences of each of the parameters investigated are discussed.
A total of 104 laboratory model tests on a square footing subjected to eccentrically inclined loads supported by sand reinforced with randomly distributed polypropylene fibers were conducted in order to compare the results with those obtained from unreinforced sand and with each other. For conducting the model tests, uniform sand was compacted in a test box at one particular relative density of compaction. The effect of percentage of reinforcement used, thickness of the reinforced layer, angle of inclination of load to vertical and eccentricity of load applied on various prominent factors such as ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt were investigated. An improvement in ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt of foundation was observed with an increase in the percentage of fibers used and thickness of reinforced sand layer under different inclinations and eccentricities of load. A statistical model using non-linear regression analysis based on present experimental data for predicting the vertical settlement ($s_p$), horizontal deformation ($hd_p$) and tilt ($t_p$) of square footing on reinforced sand at any load applied was done where the dependent variable was predicted settlement ($s_p$), horizontal deformation ($hd_p$) and tilt ($t_p$) respectively.
The effects of variability of the mechanical properties of lead rubber bearings on the response of a seismic isolation system are investigated. Material variability in manufacturing, aging, and operation temperature is assumed, and two variation models of an isolation system are considered. To evaluate the effect of ground motion characteristics on the response, 27 earthquake record sets with different peak A/V ratios were selected, and three components of ground motions were used for a seismic response analysis. The response in an isolation system and a superstructure increases significantly for ground motions with low A/V ratios. The variation in the mechanical properties of isolators results in a significant influence on the shear strains of the isolators and the acceleration response of the superstructure. The variation provisions in the ASCE-4 are reasonable, but more strict variation limits should be given to isolation systems subjected to ground motions having low A/V ratios. For application of seismic isolation systems to safety-related nuclear structures, the variation in the material and mechanical properties of the isolation system should be properly controlled during the manufacturing and aging processes. In addition, special consideration should be given to minimize the accidental torsion caused by the dissimilarity in the stiffness variations of the isolators.
Tall buildings have been traditionally designed to be symmetric rectangular, triangular or circular in plan, in order to avoid excessive seismic-induced torsional vibrations due to eccentricity, especially in seismic-prone regions like Japan. However, recent tall building design has been released from the spell of compulsory symmetric shape design, and free-style design is increasing. This is mainly due to architects' and structural designers' challenging demands for novel and unconventional expressions. Another important aspect is that rather complicated sectional shapes are basically good with regard to aerodynamic properties for crosswind excitations, which are a key issue in tall-building wind-resistant design. A series of wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulation have been carried out to determine aerodynamic forces and wind pressures acting on tall building models with various configurations: corner cut, setbacks, helical and so on. Dynamic wind-induced response analyses of these models have also been conducted. The results of these experiments have led to comprehensive understanding of the aerodynamic characteristics of tall buildings with various configurations.
