In the design of earthquake resistant reinforced concrete (RC) structures, both flexural strength and deformability need to be considered. However, in almost all existing RC design codes, the design of flexural strength and deformability of RC beams are separated and independent on each other. Therefore, the pros and cons of using high-performance materials on the flexural performance of RC beams are not revealed. From the theoretical results obtained in a previous study on flexural deformability of RC beams, it is seen that the critical design factors such as degree of reinforcement, concrete/steel yield strength and confining pressure would simultaneously affect the flexural strength and deformability. To study the effects of these factors, the previous theoretical results are presented in various charts plotting flexural strength against deformability. Using these charts, a "concurrent flexural strength and deformability design" that would allow structural engineers to consider simultaneously both strength and deformability requirements is developed. For application in real construction practice where concrete strength is usually prescribed, a simpler method of determining the maximum and minimum limits of degree of reinforcement for a particular pair of strength and deformability demand is proposed. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of both design methods.
With the further increase of span length, the cable-stayed bridge tends to be more slender, and becomes more susceptible to the seismic action. By taking a super long-span cable-stayed bridge with main span of 1400m as example, structural response of the bridge under the E1 horizontal and vertical seismic excitations is investigated numerically by the multimode seismic response spectrum and time-history analysis respectively, the seismic behavior and also the effect of structural nonlinearity on the seismic response of super long-span cable-stayed bridge are revealed. Furthermore, the effect of structural parameters including the girder depth and width, the tower structural style, the tower height-to-span ratio, the side-tomain span ratio, the auxiliary piers in side spans and the anchorage system of stay cables etc on the seismic performance of super long-span cable-stayed bridge is investigated numerically by the multimode seismic response spectrum analysis, and the favorable earthquake-resistant structural system of super long-span cable-stayed bridge is proposed.

Bracing structures with off-centre bracing system is one of the new resistant systems that frequently used in the frame with pin connections. High ductility, high-energy dissipation and decrease of base shear are advantages of this bracing system. However, beside these advantages, reconstruction and hard repair of off-centre bracing system cause inappropriate performance in the earthquake. Therefore, in this paper, the goal is investigating the behavior of this type of bracing system with ductile element (circular dissipater), in order to providing replacement of damaged member without needing repair or reconstruction of the general system. To achieve this purpose, some numerical studies have been performed using ANSYS software, a frame with off-centre bracing system and optimum eccentricity (OBS-C-O) and another frame with the same identifications without ductile element (OBS) has been created. In order to investigate precisely on the optimum placement of circular elements under monotonic load again three steal frames were modeled. Furthermore, the behavior of this general system investigated for the first time, linear and nonlinear behavior of these two steel frames compared to each other, to achieve the benefit of using the circular element in an off-centre bracing system. Eventually, the analytical results revealed that the performance of steel ring at the end of off-centre braces system illustrating as a first defensive line and buckling fuse in the off-centre bracing system.

The objective of conventional seismic design is to ensure an acceptable safety level while avoiding catastrophic failures of structures and loss of life. Over the last many years, a large amount of research has been devoted into developing effective earthquake resistant systems in order to raise the seismic performance level of structures. The purpose of this study is to propose a new damping system, which realize not only increasing seismic performance but also easy repairing after an earthquake. The proposed damping system is slit in the bottom of wall with damping devices installed in the slit horizontally aiming to dissipate energy during earthquakes. Cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity. Test results show that the proposed systems exhibit a stable hysteretic response and the energy dissipation in this system is concentrated on the damping devices.
This paper summarizes the results of a research on the isolate effects and economical efficiencies of seismic isolation design compared with the existing earthquake-resistant design, and presents seismic performance of the base isolation system consisting of sliding-type bearing and lead rubber bearing (LRB) compared with that consisting of the LRB only. From the results of the research, it is verified that seismic isolation is very effective to mitigate the influence of earthquake on structures and it is possible to increase the serviceability due to decrease of the floor acceleration. Also, from the point of view of reduction of story acceleration and base shear, the base isolation system consisting of sliding-type bearing and LRB is more effective than that with LRB only. In respect of economical efficiency, special care should be taken in using this method since costs which have to be paid in proportin to increased performance are high.
Numerical simulation of the non-linear behavior of (RC) structural walls subjected to severe earthquake ground motions requires a reliable modeling approach that includes important material characteristics and behavioral response features. The objective of this paper is to optimize a simplified method for the assessment of the seismic response and damage development analyses of an RC structural wall building using macro-element model. The first stage of this study investigates effectiveness and ability of the macro-element model in predicting the flexural nonlinear response of the specimen based on previous experimental test results conducted in UCLA. The sensitivity of the predicted wall responses to changes in model parameters is also assessed. The macro-element model is next used to examine the dynamic behavior of the structural wall building-all the way from elastic behavior to global instability, by applying an approximate Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), based on Uncoupled Modal Response History Analysis (UMRHA), setting up nonlinear single degree of freedom systems. Finally, the identification of the global stiffness decrease as a function of a damage variable is carried out by means of this simplified methodology. Responses are compared at various locations on the structural wall by conducting static and dynamic pushover analyses for accurate estimation of seismic performance of the structure using macro-element model. Results obtained with the numerical model for rectangular wall cross sections compare favorably with experimental responses for flexural capacity, stiffness, and deformability. Overall, the model is qualified for safety assessment and design of earthquake resistant structures with structural walls.

To examine the performance of a thin plate damper attached to coupling beam of bearing wall system, 5 specimens were designed with the variable parameters of the thickness and length of a thin steel plate, which was constructed and tested with a lateral load with up to a 5% drift ratio. The result was that the total amount of the energy dissipation of the specimen with the thin plate damper was greater than that of the standard RC specimen, and the plate buckling and plastic deformation could be seen in steel plate. The shorter the length of the damper, the higher was the lateral resistant force, but there was no apparent increase in the energy dissipation. By comparison of the experiments with the elastic buckling analysis, it was shown that the buckling force from the analysis could properly estimate the maximum value of the linear elastic range.

A seismic structure is an earthquake-resistant design that dissipates seismic energy by equipping the structure with a device called a damper. As research efforts to reduce earthquake damage continue to rise, technology for isolating vibrations in structures has evolved by altering the materials and shapes of dampers. However, due to the inherent nature of the damper, there are an unescapable restrictions on the extent of plastic deformation that occurs in the material to effectively dissipate energy. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a long-life damper that offers semi-permanently usage and enhances structural performance by applying additional tension which is achieved by utilizing super elastic shape memory alloy (SSMA), a material that self-recovers after deformation. To comprehensively understand the behavior of long-life dampers, finite element analysis was performed considering the design variables such as material, wire diameter, and presence of tension, and response behavior was derived to analyze characteristics such as load resistance, energy dissipation, and residual displacement to determine the performance of long-life dampers in seismic structure. Excellence has been proven from finite element analysis results.

Generally, earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for stability In this paper, the spatial structures are applied an isolation system to boundary parts between roof systems and sub-structures. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behaviors of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high-rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify an analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behaviors of roof systems according to the mass and stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.

The performance of masonry infilled frames during the past earthquakes shows that the infill panels play a major role as earthquake-resistant elements. Experimental observations regarding the influence of infill panels on increasing stiffness and strength of reinforced concrete structures reveal that such panels can be used in order to strengthen reinforced concrete frames. The present study examines the influence of infill panels on seismic behavior of RC frame structures. For this purpose, several low- and mid-rise RC frames (two-, four-, seven-, and ten story) were numerically investigated. Reinforced masonry infill panels were then placed within the frames and the models were subjected to several nonlinear incremental static and dynamic analyses. In order to determine the acceptance criteria and modeling parameters for frames as well as reinforced masonry panels, the Iranian Guideline for Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Masonry Buildings (Issue No. 376), the Iranian Guideline for Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Structures (Issue No. 360) and FEMA Guidelines (FEMA 273 and 356) were used. The results of analyses showed that the use of reinforced masonry infill panels in RC frame structures can have beneficial effects on structural performance. It was confirmed that the use of masonry infill panels results in an increment in strength and stiffness of the framed buildings, followed by a reduction in displacement demand for the structural systems.
