In the past, safety assessment on the site of Ulchin Nuclear Power Plants against tsunamis was carried out with probable maximum earthquake magnitude and related tsunamigenic fault parameters. Recently, however, based on the seismic gap theory, some seismologists warned about earthquakes of larger magnitudes than had been expected. In this study, we revaluated tsunami risk with a finite difference model based on linear and nonlinear shallow water equations. Firstly, we simulated the\`83 tsunami and compared the calculated water surface profile with the observed wave heights. Secondly, we evaluated the rise and drop of sea water level at the site of Ulchin Nuclear Power Plant with fault parameters of the past '83, '93 tsunamis and some dangerous faults. Finally, we showed that the cooling water intake facility of Ulchin Nuclear Power Plants would be safely operated in disastrous tsunamis.
In this study, the seismic performance of RC school buildings which were not designed according to earthquake-resistance design code were evaluated by using response spectrum and push-over analyses. The torsional amplification effect due to plan irregularity is considered and then the efficiency of seismic retrofitting methods such as RC shear wall, steel frame, RC frame and PC wing wall was investigated. The analysis result indicate that the inter-story drift concentrated in the first floor and most plastic hinge forms at the column of the first story. Among the retrofitting methods, the PC wing wall has the highest seismic performance in strength and story drift aspect. Especially, it can make building ductile behavior due to the concentrated inter-story drift at the first column hinge is distributed overall stories. The axial force, shear force and moment magnitude of existing elements significantly decreased after retrofitting. However, the axial and shear force of the elements connected to the additional retrofitting elements increased, and especially the boundary columns at the end of the retrofitting shear wall should be reinforced for assuring the enhancement of seismic performance.
This paper reports on the results of a parametric study, which examines the effects of varying aspect ratios on the dynamic response of cylindrical silos directly supported on the ground under earthquake loading. Previous research has shown that numerical models can provide considerably realistic simulations when it comes to the behavior of silos by using correct boundary conditions, appropriate element types and material models. To this end, a three dimensional numerical model, taking into account the bulk material-silo wall interaction, was produced by the ANSYS commercial program, which is in turn based on the finite element method. The results obtained from the numerical analysis are discussed comparatively in terms of dynamic material pressure, horizontal displacement, equivalent base shear force and equivalent bending moment responses for considered aspect ratios. The effects experienced because of the slenderness of the silo in regards to the seismic response were evaluated along with the effectiveness of the classification system proposed by Eurocode in evaluating the loads on the vertical walls. Results clearly show that slenderness directly affects the seismic response of such structures especially in terms of behavior and the magnitude of the responses. Furthermore the aspect ratio value of 2.0, given as a behavioral changing limit in the technical literature, can be used as a valid limit for seismic behavior.

This study investigated the acceleration response and shape change characteristics of a gravity quay wall according to the magnitude of the applied acceleration. The quay wall was defined as a port facility damaged by the Kobe earthquake. Four experimental scenarios were established based on the inclination condition grades, considered to be a significant defect factor in the quay wall. Then, the shaking table test was conducted using scaled-down quay wall models constructed per each scenario. The ground acceleration was gradually increased from the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.1 g to 0.7 g. After each ground acceleration test, acceleration installed on the wall and backfill ground and inclination on the top of the wall were measured to assess the amplification of peak response acceleration and maximum response amplitude and the change in the inclination of the quay wall. This study also analyzed the separation of the quay wall from the backfill and the crack pattern of the backfill ground according to PGA values and inclination condition grades. The result of this study shows that response acceleration could provide a reasonable prediction for the changes in the inclination of the quay wall and the crack generation and propagation on the backfill from a current inclination condition grade.

This paper evaluates the soundness of structural elements using Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT). WPT is applied to the response acceleration of a framed structure which is subjected to earthquake load to decompose the response acceleration, then the energy of each component is calculated. The first five largest components in energy magnitude among the decomposed components are selected as input to an ANN to identify the damage location and severity. Two nodes in output layer yield damaged element and damage severity respectively. This method successfully evaluates the amount of damage and its location in the structure.

This paper is on the vibration control of access floor on the frames of reinforced structure. In this study, the horizontal anti-vibration system using precise spring damper was developed and modeling and vibration analysis of the RC structure was performed for the control of horizontal vibration coused by machinery and worker's moving. Experiment was done in three cases, no damper at the RC structures, dampers connecting pedestal to pedestal and pedestal to the structure, for the investigation of the effect of the system on disigned RC structure. For each experiment, the occeleration responses on slab and access floor after giving impact wave and external vibration were measured. It was shown that the magnitude of resonance response of the system with dampers are smaller than without damper and the resonance peak also partly moved to low-frequency range. Furthermore. It was shown that the acceleration components of the system with domoers decreased greatly in high-frequency range and the system was very much effective especially for external vibration. In order to verify the anti-vibration effect of the developed system, the vibration analysis was also done for the system by using the finite element modelling. The analysis results was in good agreement with experimental results. Thus, It is concluded that this study is useful for the design of precise anti-vibration system and micro-vibration control of concrete structures.

Recently, the liquefaction phenomenon was first discovered in Korea due to a magnitude 5.4 earthquake that occurred in Pohang, Gyeonsangbuk-do. When liquefaction occurs, some of the water and sand are ejected to the ground, producing a space, which leads to various dangerous situations, such as ground subsidence, building collapse, and sinkhole generation. Recently, the necessity of producing a liquefaction risk map in Korea has increased to grasp potential liquefaction areas in advance. Therefore, this study examined the drilling information from the national geotechnical information DB center at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport to produce a liquefaction risk map, and developed a module to implement functions for basic data modeling and 3D analysis based on drilling information database extraction and information. Through this study, effective interlocking technology of the integrated database of national land information was obtained, and three-dimensional information was generated for each stage of liquefaction risk analysis, such as soil resistance value and a liquefaction risk map. In the future, the technology developed in this study can be used as a comprehensive decision support technology for establishing a foundation for building 3D liquefaction information and for establishing a response system of liquefaction.

Response analysis of buried pipeline subjected to permanent ground deformation(PGD) due to liquefaction is mainly executed by use of numerical analysis or semi-analytical relationship, Especially for the semi-analytical relationship considering transverse PGD, it has somewhat limited applicability : since it has different formula according to the width of PGD and does not reflect various patterns of PGD which is caused by the decrease of soil stiffness, Therefore, in this study, the applicability of existing analytical relationship is closely investigated through the comparison of FEM results at first. And then, based on meaningful contemplation, improved analytical relationship is proposed. The proposed one models the system behavior of buried pipeline as the combination of cable and beam, and thus it is applicable to arbitrary width of PGD, Moreover, it does reflect various patterns of PGD by introducing interaction pattern coefficient. Through the comparison of numerical results using the FEM and the proposed analytical relationship, rational applicability is objectively verified and noticeable considerations are discussed, Moreover, analyses considering the change of PGD magnitude and patterns are performed.
In this study, a new methodology for the assessment of liquefaction potential is proposed. Since there is no data on the liquefaction damage in Korea, the dynamic behavior of fully saturated soils is characterized through laboratory dynamic tests. There are two experimental parameters related to the soil liquefaction resistance characteristics : the one is the index of disturbance determined by $G/G_{max}$ curve and the other is a plastic shear strain trajectory evaluated from stress-strain curve. The proposed methodology takes advantage of the site response analysis based on real earthquake records to determine the driving effect of earthquake. In the evaluation of liquefaction resistance characteristics, it is verified experimentally that the magnitude of cyclic shear stress has no influence on the critical value of plastic shear strain trajectory at which the initial liquefaction occurs. Cyclic triaxial tests under the conditions of various cyclic stress ratios and torsional shear tests are carried out far the purpose of verification. Through this study, the critical value at the initial liquefaction is found unique regardless of the cyclic stress ratio. It is also f3und that liquefaction resistance curve drawn with disturbance and plastic shear strain trajectory can simulate the behavior of fully saturated soils under dynamic loads.
The tsunami from the megathrust earthquake magnitude 9.3 on 26 December 2004 is the largest tsunami the world has known in over forty years. This tsunami destructively attacked 13 countries around Indian Ocean with at least 230,000 fatalities, displaced people 2,089,883 and 1.5 million people who lost their livelihoods. The ratio of women and children killed to men is 3 to 1. The total damage costs US$ 10.73 billion and rebuilding costs US$ 10.375 billion. The tsunami's death toll could have been drastically reduced, if the warning was disseminated quickly and effectively to the coastal dwellers along the Indian Ocean rim. With a warning system in Indian Ocean similar to that operating in the Pacific Ocean since 1965, it would have been possible to warn, evacuate and save countless lives. The best tribute we can pay to all who perished or suffered in this disaster is to heed its powerful lessons. UNESCO/IOC have put their tremendous effort on better disaster preparedness, functional early warning systems and realistic arrangements to cope with tsunami disaster. They organized ICG/IOTWS (Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System) and the third of this meeting is held in Bali, Indonesia during $31^{st}$ July to $4^{th}$ August 2006. A US$ 53 million interim warning system using tidal gauges and undersea sensors is nearing completion in the Indian Ocean with the assistance from IOC. The tsunami warning depends strictly on an early detection of a tsunami (wave) perturbation in the ocean itself. It does not and cannot depend on seismological information alone. In the case of 26 December 2004 tsunami when the NOAA/PMEL DART (Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami) system has not been deployed, the initialized input of sea surface perturbation for the MOST (Method Of Splitting Tsunami) model was from the tsunamigenic-earthquake source model. It is the first time that the satellite altimeters can detect the signal of tsunami wave in the Bay of Bengal and was used to validate the output from the MOST model in the deep ocean. In the case of Thailand, the inundation part of the MOST model was run from Sumatra 2004 for inundation mapping purposes. The medium and high resolution satellite data were used to assess the degree of the damage from Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 with NDVI classification at 6 provinces on the Andaman seacoast of Thailand. With the tide-gauge station data, run-up surveys, bathymetry and coastal topography data and land-use classification from satellite imageries, we can use these information for coastal zone management on evacuation plan and construction code.
