Introduction of the Global Geodetic Observing System (지구측지관측시스템(GGOS) 연구동향)

  • The Modem Geodesy monitors physical and geometrical shape and motion of the Earth and, more importantly, its temporal variations with unprecedented precision. It provides accurate and stable reference frames for Earth observations in the Space era. Furthermore, with an aid of interdisciplinary approaches, it also traces the causes of the variations in shape and motion of the Earth and eventually contributes to a better understanding of the Earth system. The International Association of Geodesy (IAG) has established the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) to integrate the multitude of geodetic tools and tried to contribute to the management of global environmental changes as a partner of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Here we introduce the contribution of geodesy to the various fields of Earth Science by focusing on GGOS and encourage interdisciplinary researches.

Analysis of net radiative changes and correlation with albedo over Antarctica (남극에서의 위성기반 순복사 장기변화와 알베도 사이의 상관성 분석)

  • Antarctica isimportant area in order to understand climate change. In addition, this area is complex region where indicate warming and cooling trend according to previous studies. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the long-term variability of Antarctic energy budget. Net radiation, one of energy budget factor, is affected by albedo, and albedo cause negative radiative forcing. It is necessary to analyze a relationship between albedo and net radiation in order to analyze relationship between two factors in Antarctic climate changes and ice-albedo feedback. In thisstudy, we calculated net radiation using satellite data and performed an analysis of long-term variability of net radiation over Antarctica. In addition we analyzed correlation between albedo. As a results, net radiation indicates a negative value in land and positive value in ocean during study periods. As an annual changes, oceanic trend indicates an opposed to albedo. Time series pattern of net radiation is symmetrical with albedo. Correlation between the two factors indicate a negative correlation of -0.73 in the land and -0.32 in the ocean.

Related Conception s to Earth System and Applying of Systems Thinking about Carbon Cycle of the Preservice Teachers (예비교사들의 탄소 순환에 대한 지구시스템의 관련개념과 시스템 사고의 적용)

  • Using six preservice teachers as subjects, this was purpose to research about concepts in understanding carbon cycle, which of concepts were related to the conception of the system, and finally whether or not the systems thinking was sufficiently around carbon cycle. To achieve this study purpose , an instrument related to carbon cycle was developed and administered to the six teachers. The study found that a total of 42 conceptions within the system were concepts related to carbon cycle. The consisted of 15 conceptions in atmosphere, 11 in atmosphere 9 in hydrosphere, and 7 in lithosphere. In aspect of applying the system thinking, 4 subjects who couldn't compose the feedback loop in their causal map failed to apply this type of thinking. The other two who applied systems thinking had 2 and 1 feedback loop each, in their causal maps. But, one of the feedback loop from the subject who made two was based on unscientific reasoning. As a result, the subjects had lower understanding of concepts related to carbon cycle in lithosphere than in atmosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Futhermore, the subjects' application of the earth systems thinking on carbon was at a low standard.

Analysis of Conceptions of Earth System Cycles as Perceived by College Students (대학생들이 인식하는 지구계 순환의 구성 개념 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to identify college students' conceptions of the earth system cycles as learners of earth science education (ESE) and draw educational implications. An eight-week creative story writing project was held with 62 non-science students taking a general course on earth science. Their creative stories were categorized by analyzing the conceptions and types of cycle with a story mapping technique. The cycle conceptions of earth systems were expressed diversely into 32; most of the cycle types were circular and complex, while the others were branch-shaped and linear types that fail to complete the cycles. College students' conceptions of the earth system cycles is biased toward natural-abiotic systems; less than 30% of them are shown to be aware of all three categories: natural-abiotic, natural-biotic, and human systems. It is essential to diversify the content of education on earth system cycles and help learners develop systematic methods of thinking so that they will be able to recognize the impacts of feedback from human activities through ESE.

Development of Remote Control System for KNUO 16 (공주대학교 천문대 16인치 반사망원경의 원격 제어 시스템 구축)

  • We developed a remote control system for the 16" reflecting telescope at KNUO (Kongiu National University Observatory). This system is a close loop system. The electronic control part used TCS-196 of the Korea Astronomy Observatory, the mechanical part was developed directly in this research. The pointing accuracy of this system was ${\pm}$50" in the hour angle direction, ${\pm}$40" in the declination direction after mount modeling. The tracking accuracy was about 1"/min. This pilot test result means that this system is suitable for research or education of astronomical fields.

  • Wildfires cause a lot of environmental and economic damage to the Earth over time. Various experiments have examined the harmful effects of wildfires. Also, studies for detecting wildfires and pollutant emissions using satellite remote sensing have been conducted for many years. The wildfire product for the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), Korea's first environmental satellite sensor, has not been provided yet. In this study, a false-color composite for better expression of wildfire smoke was created from GEMS and used in a U-Net model for wildfire detection. Then, a classification model was constructed to distinguish yellow dust from the wildfire smoke candidate pixels. The proposed method can contribute to disaster monitoring using GEMS images.

Development and Application of Earth Science Module Based on Earth System (지구계 주제 중심의 지구과학 모듈 개발 및 적용)

  • The purposes of this study were to develop an Earth systems-based earth science module and to investigate the effects of field application. The module was applied to two classrooms of a total of 76 second-year high schoolers, in order to investigate the effectiveness of the developed module. Data was collected from observations in earth science classrooms, interviews, and questionnaires. The findings were as follows. First, the Earth systems-based earth science module was designed to be associated with the aims of the national Earth Science Curriculum and to improve students' Earth science literacy. The module was composed of two sections for a total of seven instructional hours for high schoolers. The former sections included the understanding of the Earth system through the understanding of each individual component of the system, its characteristics, properties and structure. The latter section of the module, consisting of 4 instructional hours, dealt with earth environmental problems, the understanding of subsystems changing through natural processes and cycles, and human interactions and their effects upon Earth systems. Second, the module was helpful in learning about the importance of understanding the interactions between water, rock, air, and life when it comes to understanding the Earth system, its components, characteristics, and properties. The Earth systems-based earth science module is a valuable and helpful instructional material which can enhance students' understanding of Earth systems and earth science literacy.

The Development of High School Instructional Program for Increasing Creative Thinking Abilities: Focused on Building a Scale Model of the Solar System (창의적 사고 계발을 위한 고등학교 학습 프로그램 개발: 태양계 축소 모형을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop instructional programs for 10th graders to facilitate their creative thinking abilities and understanding concerning the scale of the Solar System. The programs were based on four major themes and composed of eight lessons which dealt with the relative scale of the Solar System. The programs were applied to 155 students at G high school in Gumi City. The results showed that the programs were helpful to students in that they facilitated easier understanding of the relative sizes of planets within the solar system as well as creative thinking abilities including divergent thinking and convergent thinking.

Suggesting Research Methods to Explore the Nature of Earth Science: Applying the Phenomenological Approach and Family Resemblance Approach to NOS (지구과학의 본성에 대한 연구방법 제안 -현상학적 접근 및 과학의 본성(NOS)에 대한 가족유사성 접근의 활용-)

  • In this study, we propose research methods to explore the nature of earth science by applying the phenomenological approach and NOS-family resemblance approach based on literature review. The phenomenological approach exploring the nature of earth science is a method of collecting, analyzing and synthesizing multifaceted features of earth science from intuitive sensory phenomena without prejudice. As a way of exploring the nature of earth science from a phenomenological point of view, we propose the NOS-family resemblance approach to the NOS. This approach provides a comprehensive explanation of NOS by combining the characteristics shared by different areas of science with distinct differences. Applying this method to exploring the nature of earth science, we can identify both domain-general and domain-specific characteristics that make sub-areas of earth science a 'family.' For example, through the networking of features shared by such sub-areas as geology, atmospheric science, oceanography, astronomy, earth system science, etc., we can extract the family-resemblance characteristics that make these sub-areas a family called earth science. Through these approaches to the nature of earth science, the richness, complexity, and dynamic nature of earth science can be revealed as a whole. In addition, we will be able to grasp the change in the sub-areas that constitute the earth science, which in turn changes the nature of earth science, and to contribute to establishing the status and development system of earth science as a school subject.

In-Orbit Performance Result of KITSAT-3 Earth Imaging System (MEIS)

  • A compact imaging system, the Multi-spectral Earth Imaging System (MEIS) was developed and operated on an engineering test satellite, KITSAT-3 at the orbital altitude of 720 km. The MEIS takes multi-spectral images of the earth's surface with the swath width of 48 km and the ground sampling distance of 13.8 m in three spectral bands. A brief technical description of the KITSAT-3 MEIS and the result from its initial operation since early June, 1999 are presented. The quality of images produced by the KITSAT-3 MEIS was found comparable to that of images from existing commercial earth observation satellites from its preliminary assessment.
