  • To provide detailed and appropriate meteorological information in mountainous areas, the Korea Forest Service has established an Automatic Mountain Meteorology Observation Station (AMOS) network in major mountainous regions since 2012, and 464 stations are currently operated. In this study, we proposed an optimal kriging technique with lapse rate correction to produce gridded temperature data suitable for Korean forests using AMOS point observations. First, the outliers of the AMOS temperature data were removed through statistical processing. Then, an optimized theoretical variogram, which best approximates the empirical variogram, was derived to perform the optimal kriging with lapse rate correction. A 500-meter resolution Kriging map for temperature was created to reflect the elevation variations in Korean mountainous terrain. A blind evaluation of the method using a spatially unbiased validation sample showed a correlation coefficient of 0.899 to 0.953 and an error of 0.933 to 1.230℃, indicating a slight accuracy improvement compared to regular kriging without lapse rate correction. However, the critical advantage of the proposed method is that it can appropriately represent the complex terrain of Korean forests, such as local variations in mountainous areas and coastal forests in Gangwon province and topographical differences in Jirisan and Naejangsan and their surrounding forests.

  • In order to clarify the relation between El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Ni$\tilde{n}$a and wind resources of the Korean Peninsula, observed meteorological data for 20 years were used in this study. Although the wind speed tends to decrease in Eurasia Continent, it gradually increases in the peninsula for 10 years. The seasonal variation of wind speed due to El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/La Ni$\tilde{n}$a development is not so small and negative anomalies of SST tend to lead the beginning of the wind speed increase over the Korean Peninsula. Wind speed variation caused by the global scale meteorological phenomena is more sensitive in mountainous area than in any other areas because of the relatively weak mesoscale forcing at mountainous area.

  • The purpose of this study was to identity scientific models included in the Earth domain of the $10^{th}$ grade science textbooks. Three earth science-related chapters in each of 11 trade books were analyzed. A framework was developed and used to classify a scientific model from three different perspectives: medium of representation, method of representation, and mobility of a model. Results showed that the science textbooks utilized domain-specific models in which the nature of sub-areas of earth science was embedded. That is, the unit of 'Change of the Earth' included many iconic models that represented the inaccessible inner structure of the earth and the movement of the tectonic plates. These were also two-dimensional pictorial and static models. In the chapter of 'Atmosphere and Oceans', symbolic and diagrammatic models were dominant in use, which included weather maps and contour line graphs of sea surface temperature and salinity. The unit of 'Solar System and Galaxies' showed the highly frequent use of iconic and analogical models for the large-scale celestial objects and their movements. Implications for earth science education and relevant research were discussed.

  • A communications satellite system placed in three-Lagrange points, $L_3$, $L_4$ and $L_5$, of the restricted three-body problem in Earth-Moon system is proposed in this paper. LEO satellite constellation has been another choice of communications system. The proposed system which is alternatives of limited geostationary orbit resources, has some weak points such as long distance from the Earth, relatively expensive launch cost, long delay time, more required power, and so on. It has good points like less efforts (fuel) for station keeping, less eclipses, etc. This system has limitations for applications to provide commercial services but it is still some attractive points.

  • This study aims at examining the concepts that apply in understanding the water cycle, to inquire into the concept related to the unit of earth structure that are taught in the Earth Science I. Analysis of word association, drawing and questionnaires showed that it was difficult for them to understand the water cycle within the earth system, and to put components into one integrated system together. In other words, it showed that they have a low standard of understanding in connection with the water cycle, that their understanding of water cycle are simple thoughts rather than systematic thought. It showed that they had an understanding of the atmosphere and hydrosphere to some extent, but they took no notice of the effect of the lithosphere or biosphere, nor do they have an understanding of its effect. Analysis of questionnaires showed that they have no well understanding of water cycle of cyclic nature, and that they have low standard of understanding of the components of water cycle.

  • The Earth's total magnetic field was extracted from on board TAM (Three Axis Magnetometer) observations of KOMPSAT-1 satellite between June 19th and 21st, 2000. In the pre-processing, the TAM's telemetry data were transformed from ECI (Earth Centered Inertial frame) to ECEF (Earth Centered Earth Fixed frame) and then to spherical coordination, and self-induced magnetic field by satellite bus itself were removed by using an on-orbit magnetometer data correction method. The 2-D wavenumber correlation filtering and quadrant-swapping method were applied to the pre-processed data in order to eliminate dynamic components and track-line noise, respectively. Then, the spherical harmonic coefficients are calculated from KOMPSAT-1 data. To test the validity of the TAM's geomagnetic field, Danish/NASA/French ${\phi}$rsted satellite's magnetic model and IGRF2000 model were used for statistical comparison. The correlation coefficient between ${\phi}$rsted and TAM is 0.97 and IGRF and TAM is 0.96. It was found that the data from on board magnetometer observations for attitude control of Earth-observing satellites can be used to determinate the Earth's total magnetic field and that they can be efficiently used to upgrade the global geomagnetic field coefficients, such as IGRF by providing new information at various altitudes with better temporal and spatial coverage.

  • In this paper, we built a data-driven artificial intelligence model using RNN-LSTM (Recurrent Neural Networks-Long Short-Term Memory) to predict the Lorenz system, and examined the possibility of whether this model can replace chaotic dynamic models. We confirmed that the data-driven model reflects the chaotic nature of the Lorenz system, where a small error in the initial conditions produces fundamentally different results, and the system moves around two stable poles, repeating the transition process, the characteristic of "deterministic non-periodic flow", and simulates the bifurcation phenomenon. We also demonstrated the advantage of adjusting integration time intervals to reduce computational resources in data-driven models. Thus, we anticipate expanding the applicability of data-driven artificial intelligence models through future research on refining data-driven models and data assimilation techniques for data-driven models.

  • This study aims to describe various teaching cases about 'earth revolution' in terms of PCK; knowledge of curriculum, knowledge of teaching strategies and knowledge of assessment. Based on these various cases we suggested PCK progressions about 'earth revolution'. For these, we recorded 'solar system and star' classes of nine elementary school teachers' in Kangwon, Gyeonggi, Gwangju, and Seoul. We adopted Lee & Lee (2016)'s topic-specific PCK framework to analyze the classes. As results, we suggested topic-specific PCK progression about 'earth revolution'. The results showed the upper anchor of the earth revolution class were exploring the reason of the change of constellation, finding the tendency of constellation change. These teachings were carried by the teachers' adaptive strategies. The upper anchor of the assessment was monitoring students' understanding during the whole class. The PCK progression about 'earth revolution' could help the teachers plan the earth revolution class, and reflect their own teachings.

  • We have designed and manufactured the Earth observation camera (EOC) of multi-purpose infrared imaging system (MIRIS). MIRIS is a main payload of the STSAT-3, which will be launched in late 2012. The main objective of the EOC is to test the operation of Korean IR technology in space, so we have designed the optical and mechanical system of the EOC to fit the IR detector system. We have assembled the flight model (FM) of EOC and performed environment tests successfully. The EOC is now ready to be integrated into the satellite system waiting for operation in space, as planned.

  • This study propose a new method to detect Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide occurring in South Sea of Korea using Water-leaving Radiance data and Absorption Coefficients data of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI). C. polykrikoides were analyzed and the irradiance and light emission characteristics of the wavelength range from 412 nm to 555 nm were confirmed. The detection technique proposed in this study detects the red tide occurring in the optically complex South Sea. Based on these results, it can be used for future red tide prevention.
