Earth-moving operation has a great impact on the overall budget and schedule of any heavy civil projects. More often than not, the operational decisions are made largely based on field personnel's experience and judgment. In particular, decisions on earth moving operations by scraper-dozer fleets have been heavily influenced by the following belief: "The longer a dozer pushes a scraper for loading, the better earth-moving productivity is gained by the fleet." Even though there is some truth to this notion, scraper-dozer earth moving operations involve a much complex process that requires a systematic analysis for predicting the maximum production. To this end, this paper presents a spreadsheet-based scraper-dozer fleet operation model for its production optimization. Various optimization techniques, including a genetic-algorithm method, are presented for comparison and each technique's pros and cons are discussed.

In this study, a new concept in a paddy consolidation project is introduced in that curved parallel terracing with contour-lined layout is adopted in sloping areas instead of conventional rectangular terracing. The contoured layout reduces earth-moving considerably compared to rectangular methods in consolidation projects. The objective of the paper is to develop a combinatorial optimization model using the network theory for the design of contour-lined plots which minimizes the volume of earth moving. The results showed that as the length of short side of plot is longer or the land slope is steeper, the volume of earth moving for land leveling increases. The developed optimization model is applied for three consolidated districts and the resulting optimal earth moving is compared with the volume of earth from the conventional method. The shorter is the minimum length of short side of a polt with increases the number of plots, the less is the volume of earth. As the minimum length of short side is 20 m for efficient field works by farm machinery, the volume of earth moving of optimal plot is less by 21.0∼27.1 % than that of the conventional consolidated plots.
We present an efficient and robust technique to estimate the velocity of moving targets from a single SAR image. In SAR images, azimuth image shift is a well known phenomenon, which is observed in moving targets having slant-range velocity. Most methods estimated the velocity of moving targets from the distance difference between the road and moving targets or between ship and the ship wake. However, the methods could not be always applied to moving targets because it is difficult to find the road and the ship wake. We adopted a method estimating the velocity of moving targets from azimuth differentials of range-compressed image. This method is based on an assumption that Doppler center frequency shift of moving target causes a phase difference in azimuth differential values. The phase difference is linearly distorted by Doppler rate due to the geometry of SAR image. The linear distortion is eliminated from phase removal procedure, and the constant phase difference is estimated. Finally, range velocity estimates for moving targets are retrieved. This technique is tested using an ENVISAT ASAR image in which several unknown ships are presented. The theoretical accuracy of this technique is discussed by SAR simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this method over the conventional method are also discussed.

A simulation program has been developed to evaluate operator seat vibration for earth-moving machinery and decide whether a seat meets the requirements imposed by ISO 7096. An operator seat is assumed as a linear system composed of a mass, a spring, and a damper mounted on a platform. The program evaluates the transmissibility at resonance, and the SEAT factors for a light person and a heavy person. The developed program can be utilized effectively in designing a new operator seat.
The paper aims at illustrating several key issues and ongoing efforts for development of a reliable fully-Lagrangian particle-based solver for simulation of hydroelastic slamming. Fluid model is founded on the solution of Navier-Stokes along with continuity equations via an enhanced version of a projection-based particle method, namely, Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. The fluid model is carefully coupled with a structure model on the basis of conservation of linear and angular momenta for an elastic solid. The developed coupled FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction) solver is applied to simulations of high velocity impact of an elastic aluminum wedge and hydroelastic slammings of marine panels. Validations are made both qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of reproduced pressure as well as structure deformation. Several remaining challenges as well as important key issues are highlighted. At last, a recently developed multi-scale MPS method is incorporated in the developed FSI solver towards enhancement of its adaptivity.
This paper proposes a vehicle detector with a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor. The detector consists of a MR sensor and mechanical and electronic apparatuses. Composed of six magnetically variable resistors, the MR sensor senses disturbance of the earth's magnetic field caused by a moving vehicle over itself and then produces an output indicative of the moving vehicle. Experiments have been carried out with three stages. At the first stage, the outputs of the sensor have been analyzed to show the validity of the detector's circuit and the detecting method. At the second stage, the detector has been tested on a local highway in Korea. Through the field tests, the outputs of the detector in response to various kinds of moving vehicles have been collected and analyzed. At the final stage, to verify the performance of the detector, traffic volumes on the highway have been measured with the detector and compared with the exact traffic volumes in a highly congested traffic.
Water covers 70% of the earth's surface and the human body consist of 75% of it. It is clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth. Over the last 30 years or so, numerous studies have attempted to find out more about the water microscopically. In this paper, we investigated how the receding and advancing contact angle of the moving water droplet changes on a solid surface having various LJ epsilon parameters. To observe the dynamic contact angle history, a body force applied to all water molecules after obtained the water droplet in equilibrium with the solid surface. We obtained the density profile and receding and advancing contact angle of the moving water droplet

Finally, range velocity estimates for moving targets are retrieved from the constant phase difference. This technique was tested using an ENVISAT ASAR image in which several unknown ships are presented. In the case of a isolated target, the result was nearly coincident with the result from conventional method. However, in the case of a target which is located near non-target material, the difference of the result between from our algorithm and from conventional method was more than 1m/s.

This study presents a vibration-based health monitoring strategy for short span bridges utilizing an inspection vehicle. How to screen the health condition of short span bridges in terms of a drive-by bridge inspection is described. Feasibility of the drive-by bridge inspection is investigated through a scaled laboratory moving vehicle experiment. The feasibility of using an instrumented vehicle to detect the natural frequency and changes in structural damping of a model bridge was observed. Observations also demonstrated the possibility of diagnosis of bridges by comparing patterns of identified bridge dynamic parameters through periodical monitoring. It was confirmed that the moving vehicle method identifies the damage location and severity well.

An analysis technique for detecting moving targets on a single-channel airborne frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) technology and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is presented. To analyze the relative velocities of moving targets, an FMCW-based signal model for stationary and moving targets was studied, and a SAR ambiguity function considering its signal model was simulated. The relative velocities of the moving targets on a reconstructed SAR image can be estimated by peak searching of the SAR ambiguity function, and the stationary and moving targets are easily distinguished when there is a large variation of the relative velocity. Analysis results of the moving targets on a reconstructed FMCW-SAR image, using practical airborne data and a SAR ambiguity process, are compared with the in situ testing in the study area.
