  • More than 16 percent of the total 18,032 reservoirs over the country were reported to have leakage problems and need to be improved. Recently, a great deal of progress was made in geophysical survey techniques, particularly in electrical resistivity, and the techniques are used for variety of Purposes in groundwater and dam management due to its economical advantages. This document describes the re-evaluation of existing resistivity data including newly surveyed data, mapping of modeled value in 2-D analysis to locate seepage pathways, This contains also discussion results of more than eighteen years of professional experiences in the field of dam efficiency improvement. In comparison of surface resistivity data with several soil analysis data in laboratory, it is evident that the surface resistivity value shows a qualitative proportionality with the sand contents of the filling materials in earth dam. The result from the study also indicates that the SP method in subsurface investigation is effective to detect seepage in earth filled dam as well as piping through rock/earthfill dike.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior and to study the safety evaluation of the Unmun Dam located in Cheongdo-Gun of GyeongBuk Province, Korea. For this purpose, soil analyses including boring data, geophysical surveys and monitoring the buried geotechnical gauges, such as pore-pressure gauge, earth-pressure gauge, displacement gauge, multi-layer settlement gauge, leakage flow-meter, were conducted. In addition to these data, numerical analyses of behavior of dam were performed to predict and to compare the data which were obtained from the above methods. Since many defects, such as gravel and weathered rock blocks in the dam core, and lots of amounts of leakage, by boring analyses were found, reinforcement by compaction grouting system (CGS) has been conducted in some range of dam. Some geotechnical gauge data were also used to confirm the effects of reinforcement. Analyses of monitoring the data of geotechnical gauges buried in the dam, such as pore-pressure gauge, earth-pressure gauge, displacement gauge, multi-layer settlement gauge, and leakage flow-meter shows the load transfer of dam and the possibility of hydraulic fracturing. As a conclusion, some problems in the dam found. Especially, the dam near spillway shows the high possibility of leakage. It should be pointed out that only the left side of he dam has not a leakage problem. As a whole, the dam has problems of weakness, because of unsatisfactory construction. It is strongly recommended that highly intensive monitoring is required.

  • In this study, characteristics of sediments and suspended solids flowing into Andong and Imha Dam was analyzed by color, X-ray diffraction and ICP/MS analysis. The minerals of sediments and suspended solid consist mainly of quartz, albite, chlorite, illite and small amounts of montmorillonite and kaolinite. Unlike the Andong Dam, the Imha Dam sediments contain large amounts of calcite. Color of sediments and suspended solids varies from grayish brown to dark orange. The concentrations of major heavy metals of sediments and suspended solids in the Andong and the Imha Dam are higher than the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration standard values. The concentration of heavy metals in sediments of Andong is higher than that of Imha Dam because concentration of heavy metals in the suspended solid flowing into Andong is higher than that of Imha Dam.

  • Longitudinal cracks have occurred on the crest of dams soon after their construction of two earth-rocfill dams located in Samlangjin. They are a pair of pumped storage dams constructed for generation of electrical power. The upper dam and lower dam are subjected to the variation of water level more than 10m once in a day alteratively. This paper deals with the finding of possible causes for longitudinal cracks about upper dam. The dominant cause was considered to be due to fluctuation of water load, for which numerical analysis was carried out using the hyperbolic model. In order to obtain parameters necessary to the analysis, a series of triaxial tests was performed for both core and rock material. Also dynamic triaxial test was performed to obtain dynamic properties of soils, which could be used as input data to simulate frequent variation of stress change due to the water fluctuation. It was known from the numerical analysis that the confining pressure of upper 4m from the top of the crest become negative after repeating of water load, meaning that tension cracks occurred in the top portion of the crest. The depth of longitudinal cracks has been investigated by digging test pit on the crest. This results agree with the field observation.

  • Coffer dam for tunnel type spillway in inflow section of Dae-am dam was originally planned as 2 lines sheet piles with Water Zet method. But, the result of pilot test was caused of some problems that vibration during installation of pile could pollute water and water leakage could the lower part. So, sheet piles was not satisfactory for faculty of coffer dam. Structural instability of sheet pile system need to reinforcement. Characteristic of Dae-am dam was small reservoir capacity but wide drainage area, of which it was judgment that security of leakage and stability was difficult during excavation of inlet part. So, we consider that water curtain method utilized with in site pouring concrete pile method was designed at weir part of spillway. We were known about basement rock that geological boring was carried out in weir part. After taking a deep consideration, PRD method was accepted as a new method. Concrete pile by PRD was installed to below country rock. CJM method was carried out with PRD. After making concrete wall using Top-down method, earth anchors were installed for supporting it. According to the result of numerical analysis, as water level rises, wall is stable.

  • The behaviour of an earth and rock-fill dam is complicated due to reservoir water and various materials in zoned dams. Different materials with a wide range of permeability and seasonal variation of reservoir water result in the time dependent post-constructional behaviour. In aged dams it is often required to control water level to keep the dams safe. In this case information on the post-constructional dam behaviour is important. However, present geotechnical knowledge does not fully support the occasion. In this study the post-constructional behaviour of a dam is investigated using coupled finite element models for series of idealized water reservoir cases: impoundment, draw down, seasonal fluctuation with different rising and falling speeds. Numerical results were analysed in respect of geotechnical parameters such as load transfer, hydraulic fracturing potential and stress paths. It is shown that the control of water level is an important factor while operating dams.

  • Heavy metal contaminations were investigated in fishes inhabiting the basins of Andong, Imha and Yeongju dam basins along the upper stream of the Nakdong river. The characteristics of heavy metals contamination in fish were investigated based on sampling sites located in the Andong dam basin. The muscle tissue was analyzed for 267 objects of 26 species from the Andong dam, 50 objects of 17 species from Imha dam, 38 objects of 9 species fromYoungju dam basin. The type and amount of heavy metals concentrated in the body of the fishes was found to be species-dependent. The heavy metal species which contamination increase through the Seokpo smelter are chromium, zinc, cadmium, and lead, and these are very likely the influence of the smelter. The concentration of eight heavy metals in fish from the Andong dam basin was higher than that in fish from the Imha and Youngju dam basins; the values for zinc, arsenic, and cadmium were significantly higher. However, mercury and lead exhibited high values in the Imha and Yeongju dam basins, respectively.

  • Electrical resistivity survey is widely used to investigate the stability of center-core type fill dam against the seepage phenomenon. In this study, we analyze the resistivity information obtained on a earth fill dam and compare it with the geotechnical SPT result. The analysis shows that the zones showing low resistivity value generally have low N value. However, some zones with high resistivity pattern do not accompany the increase of N value, and even showing low N value. These results imply that the direct identification of resistivity value to the real status of the core material of fill dam is impossible, and a highly resistive zone may be in serious status due to the effect increasing the resistivity value by the piping condition. Therefore, multiple exploration should be planned to reduce the uncertainty in application of geophysical methods to dam safety evaluation.
