  • Recently, the concern for mechanical properties at early age concrete are increasing because of the importance of the thermal stress and the determination of removal time of form work and prestressing work. In this study, an estimation for the development of compressive strength and elastic modulus with age in concretes isothermally cured $(10^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C)$ and having W/C ratio of 30, 40, and $50\%$ were investigated. According to experiment results, the development of compressive strength and elastic modulus shows higher values at early ages as the W/C ratio decreases and curing temperature increases. When the maturity concept, for estimation of the strength, is adopted, a modification for W/C ratio is required at early ages.

  • In this study, the admixtures for agents for enduring cold weather used widely are collected and applied to cement mortar to analyze the strength development due to variation of curing temperature at early age. The test results show that anti-freezing admixture have some problems due to high chloride content, which may cause the corrosion of reinforcement embedded in concrete. However, the mortar applied by accelerator and another kind of agent for enduring cold weather produced by S company lead to delay of strength development in low temperature. Also, it is clarified that there are no significant problems for cement mortar in strength development due to low temperature if a suitable kind of agent enduring cold weather is used and cement mortar is cured for more than $7.5^{\circ}D.D$ at early age.

  • The maturity method is used to estimate the effects of time and temperature on the strength development of concrete. The purpose of this paper is to show how variable curing temperatures affect strength development for both normal and high-strength concrete using the maturity concept. The experimental results for normal-strength concrete show clearly the cross-over effect of strength development as the time of the peak temperature varied. However, this cross-over effect does not exist after the actual ages are converted to the temperature dependent equivalent age. In other words, the existing maturity method does not include the effect of varying the time to peak temperatures but instead includes the effect of the magnitude of peak temperatures. For high-strength concrete, the results were inconclusive. This fact for normal-strength concrete coincides with the ASTM stated limitation that the existing maturity method doesn't take into account the effect of early age temperature on long-term ultimate strength. The results of this 3-year study are used as a basis for an improved concrete maturity function.

  • If predicting of compressive strength of construction in construction field at early age is possibile, rational strength management & schedule plan is possible. With method for predicting strength of concrete, many researchers have been making study of maturity method. On the other hand, nowadays rationalization of construction capacity and reduction of a term of works due to improvement of construction capacity and application of a new method of construction is gathering strength with important issue. In accordance with this present condition, construction is being progressed in winter, but proper construction mothed and countermeasure for strength management is not established in case of winter construction. Therefore to investigate application in construction field at winter of strength prediction model that developed at former study, this study aim to measure application of developed strength prediction model through manufacture of mock-up concrete according to kind of strength level at 5$^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the estimation of compressive strength of concrete incorporating fly ash subjected to high temperature is discussed. Ordinary Portland cement and fly ash cement(30% of fly ash) were used, respectively. Water to binder ration ranging from 30% to 60% and curing temperature ranging from $20^{\circ}C{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ were also adopted for the experimental parameters. According to results, at the high temperature, FAC had higher strength development at early age than OPC concrete and it kept its high strength development at later age due to accelerated pozzolanic reaction subjected to high temperature. For strength estimation, Logistic model based on maturity equation and Carino model based on equivalent age were applied to verify the availability of estimation model. It shows that fair agreements between calculated values and measured values were obtained evaluating compressive strength with logistic curve. The application of logistic model at high temperature had remarkable deviations in the same maturity. Whereas, the application of Carino model showed good agreements between calculated values and measured ones regardless of type of cement and W/B. However, some correction factors should be considered to enhance the accuracy of strength estimation of concrete.

  • This study was conducted to increase the utility and productivity of forage crops at high altitued areas. For that purpose, 21 cultivars of corn and 2 cultivars of rye were cultivated for 3 years using a randomized block designed with 3 replications. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In the Taekwallyong area (800m above sea level) which has a short frostless period, all the seeding and harvest of corn must be finished within about 135 days between mid May, the time of the last frost, and late September, the time of the first frost 2. It was relatively safe for the early maturity cultivar(ll0days) and the medium maturity cultivar(l20days), compared to the late maturity cultivar(l30days) which might have had the possibility of an overlapping period between the time of harvest and the first frost in high altitude areas 3. The productivity of forage corn, which is the most efficient crop for capturing solar energy, varied significantly with the climate circumstances but the productivity of Taekwallyong showed similar results of 19 M/T/ha, compared with 20 M/T/ha in Suwon from the '96-'98 study 4. Rye could be cultivated in high altitude areas and when corn was raised as a second crop after rye in the same year, it was possible to increase the productivity of dry matter yield by 20% through double cropping(P < 0.05). • The aim of this study of to compare the development of compressive strength of high-strength concrete with maturity and investigate the applicability the strength prediction models. An experiment was attempted on the high-strength concrete mixes using portland cement replaced by silica fume of 10% by weight of cement, the water-binder ratios of mixes being 0.30 and 0.35, the curing temperatures being 30, 20, 10, 5$^{\circ}C$. Test results of mixes are statistically analyzed to infer the correlation coefficient between the maturity and the compressive strength of high-strength concrete. The constant of strength prediction equation were determined from test results, and the equation was adopted to predict the strength of slab(W80$\times$D100$\times$H20cm). The slab was cast in the laboratory from the same batch water-binder ratio of 0.30, and cores were cut from slab in order to estimate the actual strength. These values are used to compare with predicted value. The present study allows more realistic determination of early age compressive strength of high-strength concrete and can be efficiently used to control the quality in actual construction.

  • The gonad index, reproductive cycle and first sexual maturity of Sinonovacula constricta collected from Simpo, Kimje-gun, Korea were investigated by histological analysis. The gonad index(GI) in both sexes of S. constricta increased from April and reached a maximum in July when the water temperature rapidly increased. And then, the GI values gradually decreased by spawning from August through October. Monthly variations in the GI showed a close relationship with ovarian development. The reproductive cycle in females and males can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage(March to June), late active stage(May to July), ripe stage(July to September), partially spawned stage(August to October), spent/inactive stage(October to March). The percentage of first sexual maturations in female and male clams of 50.1-60.0 mm in shell length was over 50%, and for clams over 70.1 mm in shell length, it was 100%. Because harvesting clams < 50.1 mm in shell length could potentially cause a drastic reduction in recruitment, a measure including a prohibitory fishing size should be taken for adequate improved fisheries resource management.

  • Four ruminally cannulated buffalo bulls were fed mottgrass diets using a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Treatments were arranged factorially and consisted of mottgrass fertilized with 0 for Kg nitrogen (N) per acre and harvested at 40 and 60 days of age. Nitrogen fertilization improved the concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) in early-cut mottgrass (ECM) but, the acid detergent lignin (ADL) contents were higher in the late-cut mottgrass (LCM). The crude protein (CP) contents of the mottgrass decreased with advancing maturity, but N fertilization increased CP at both maturities. The intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), CP, NDF and ADF were higher by buffalo bulls fed ECM than those fed LCM. The ruminal pH increased in first 6 hours post feeding in animals fed N fertilized mottgrass and may be due to higher concentration of ruminal ammonia. The digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF were higher by buffalo bulls fed ECM than those fed LCM. However, the application of N fertilizer did not affect the digestibilities of these nutrients.

  • PURPOSES : This study investigates the effect on concrete pavement accordance with the curing methods in cool weather and supports the best method in the field. METHODS : Two field tests evaluated the curing methods of concrete pavement in cool weather. Firstly, five curing methods were tested, including normal curing compound, black curing compound, bubble sheet, curing mat, and curing mat covered with vinyl. Concrete maturity was compared from temperature data. Secondly, normal curing compound and curing mat with vinyl, which showed the best performance, were compared in terms of maturity and join condition index. RESULTS:From the field tests, it is an evident that curing mat with vinyl accelerated the concrete strength. Therefore, it is possible to conduct saw-cut works in cool weather, which minimizes damage on concrete at joint. CONCLUSIONS : For concrete pavement in cool weather, using curing mat with vinyl as the curing method could overcome the strength delay. Therefore, strength and durability problems on concrete at joint due to cool weather would be fewer in the future.
