The setting and hardening of concrete is accompanied with nonlinear temperature distribution caused by development of hydration heat of cement. Especially at early ages, this nonlinear distribution has a large influence on the crack evolution. As a result, in order to predict the exact temperature history in concrete structures it is required to examine thermal properties of concrete. In this study, the convection heat transfer coefficient which presents thermal transfer between surface of concrete and air, was experimentally investigated with variables such as velocity of wind, curing condition and ambient temperature. At initial stage, the convection heat transfer coefficient is overestimated by the evaporation quantity. So it is essential to modify the thermal equilibrium considered with the boiling effect. From experimental results, the convection heat transfer coefficient was calculated using equations of thermal equilibrium. Finally, the prediction model for equivalent convection heat transfer coefficient including effects of velocity of wind, curing condition, ambient temperature and boiling effects was theoretically proposed. The convection heat transfer coefficient in the proposed model increases with velocity of wind, and its dependance on wind velocity is varied with curing condition. This tendency is due to a combined heat transfer system of conduction through form and convection to air. From comparison with experimental results, the convection heat transfer coefficient by this model was well agreed with those by experimental results.

The sustainable development principle of replacing natural resources with renewable material is an important research topic. In this study, waste LCD (liquid crystal display) glass powder was used to replace cement (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) through a volumetric method using three water-binder ratios (0.47, 0.59, and 0.71) to make cement mortar. The compressive strength was tested at the ages of 7, 28, 56 and 91 days. The test results show that the compressive strength increases with age but decreases as the water-binder ratio increases. The compressive strength slightly decreases with an increase in the replacement of LCD glass powder at a curing age of 7 days. However, at a curing age of 91 days, the compressive strength is slightly greater than that for the control group (glass powder is 0%). When the water-binder ratios are 0.47, 0.59 and 0.71, the compressive strength of the various replacements increases by 1.38-1.61 times, 1.56-1.80 times and 1.45-2.20 times, respectively, during the aging process from day 7 to day 91. Furthermore, a prediction model of the compressive strength of a cement mortar with waste LCD glass powder was deduced in this study. According to the comparison between the prediction analysis values and test results, the MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) values of the compressive strength are between 2.79% and 5.29%, and less than 10%. Thus, the analytical model established in this study has a good forecasting accuracy. Therefore, the proposed model can be used as a reliable tool for assessing the design strength of cement mortar from early age test results.

When fresh concrete is exposed to low temperature, the concrete may suffer frost damage due to freezing at early ages and the strength development may be delayed. One of the solution methods to resolve these problems is to reduce freezing temperature of concrete by the use of chemical admixture called Accelerator for freeze protection. In this study we Investigate the effect on the strength development of cement mortar using accelerator for freeze protection with the variable curing condition. As the result of this study, the mortar using accelerator for freeze protection show continuously the strength development in curing condition of -5$^{\circ}C$. And the compressive strength under variable temperature condition was higher than constant temperature condition in same maturity.

In this paper, compressive strength and water permeability performance for two types of crack self-healing materials such as SH-PO-0 composed of mineral admixtures(expansive agent, swelling material and crystal growth agent) and SH-PO-(5, 15, 30) blended with SH-PO-0 and phosphate additive(PO) dissolving easily calcium ion, were evaluated. The test results show that the water flow of SH-PO-0 decreased steeply at the early age although compressive strength decreased about 9% at 28 days compared with OPC. The higher PO replacement ratio is, the lower compressive strength and more improved water permeability performance is, and thus, based on such results, adequate PO replacement ratio is 15%. It is also found that the self-healing performance of SH-PO-15 was quite improved at the early ages and however, the performance of SH-PO-15 is similar to one of SH-PO-0 at long-term ages, and 28 days compressive strength of SH-PO-15 decreased about 8% compared with SH-PO-0. In addition, it is confirmed from the analysis of SEM-EDS that calcium ions of SH-PO-15 were crystallized more than those of SH-PO-0.

In this study, fundamental properties of cement were reviewed to apply high fineness cement at low temperature environment. The classified high fineness cement has large proportion of particles below $10{\mu}m$ which affects early hydration: an overall reaction of cement hydration faster. As a result of using high fineness cement, setting time of concrete was reduced and compressive strength was higher than OPC at all ages. Especially, compressive strength was more than double its value compared with OPC after three days curing in low temperature. Faster reaction and higher heat of hydration was verified by calorimetry early and maximum heat of hydration was analyzed by adiabatic temperature raising test. The analysis of this study confirmed that high fineness cement can be suitable to be used in low temperature environment.

This study discussed the pozzolanic properties of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) according to calcination and fineness conditions. The chemical and mineralogical analysis of CSS according to calcination temperature and time were carried out and compared with that of the existing pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, blast furnance slag and meta-kaolin. Various mortars were made by mixing those CSS and $Ca(OH)_2$ (1:1 wt. %), and their compressive strength and hydrates according to experimental factors such as fineness of CSS and curing age were also investigated in detail. The results show clearly the potentiality of calcined sewage sludge (CSS) as an admixture materials in concrete, but the CSS should be controlled by calcination temperature and time, and fineness etc. In this experimental condition, the calcination temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, calcination time of 2 hours and fineness of $5,000cm^2/g$ were optimum conditions in consideration of the mechanical properties and economic efficiency of CSS. The compressive strength of CSS mortars was higher than that of fly-ash mortars and blast furnace slag mortars, especially at the early ages. Then, the utilization of CSS in construction fields was greatly expected.

Recently, for the problem solution of demand and supply imbalance of fine aggregate due to the shortage of natural fine aggregate resource and the environment regulation on sea sand extraction in the construction field, the studies for the application of recycled fine aggregate using waste concrete are being progressed versatilely. On the other hand, the treatment of fly-ashes that of industrial by-product originated in the steam power plant is discussed by the continuous increasing of origination quantities. In the ease of using fly-ash, advantages are the improvement of workability, viscosity and long-time strength, and the reduction of hydration heat under the early ages, as the admixtures for concrete, but the studies for the application of fly-ash as recycled concrete admixtures are inadequacy. There fore, in this study, through investigating the properties of fresh, hardened and durability according to the replacement of recycled fine aggregate and fly-ash, it is intended to propose the fundamental data for structural application of recycled concrete using recycled fine aggregate and fly-ash. As the result of this study, they arc shown that the engineering properties and durability, in the case of replacement ratio 100% of recycled fine aggregate, arc similar to those of concrete using natural fine aggregate, so it is considered that recycled fine aggregate could be used as the fine aggregate for concrete. Also, the performances of recycled concrete are improved by replacing fly-ash.
Real-time monitoring of stiffness and strength in cement based system has received significant attention in past few decades owing to the development of advanced techniques. Also, use of environment friendly supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in cement, though gaining huge interest, severely affect the strength gain especially in early ages. Continuous monitoring of strength- and stiffness- gain using an efficient technique will systematically facilitate to choose the suitable time of removal of formwork for structures made with SCM incorporated concrete. This paper presents a technique for monitoring the strength and stiffness evolution in hydrating fly ash blended cement systems using electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) based technique. It is important to observe that the slower pozzolanic reactivity of fly ash blended cement systems could be effectively tracked using the evolution of equivalent local stiffness of the hydrating medium. Strength prediction models are proposed for estimating the strength and stiffness of the fly ash cement system, where curing age (in terms of hours/days) and the percentage replacement of cement by fly ash are the parameters. Evaluation of strength as obtained from EMI characteristics is validated with the results from destructive compression test and also compared with the same obtained from commonly used ultrasonic wave velocity (UPV). Statistical error indices indicate that the EMI technique is capable of predicting the strength of fly ash blended cement system more accurate than that from UPV. Further, the correlations between stiffness- and strength- gain over the time of hydration are also established. From the study, it is found that EMI based method can be effectively used for monitoring of strength gain in the fly ash incorporated cement system during hardening.

In summer and winter, the difference between the temperature during the day and that during the night is high, which leads to various problems during concrete placement, such as cracks and defects in the concrete as well as low durability and strength. Although nuclear power plant concrete is widely used for placement in all seasons, particular attention must be paid to its quality during the summer. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of a cooling method for mixing water, which is a commonly used hot weather precooling method, and the use of a retarder, on the characteristics of Nuclear Power Plant concrete. In the cooling method for mixing water, cold water at 5 was used, with 50% of the water content consisting of ice flakes. The effects of using a retarder were evaluated by reviewing the characteristics of the cement at the unset stage and after hardening. To evaluate the characteristics of the unset cement, we measured the slump, air volumes, setting times, and pressure strengths after hardening. Furthermore, we measured the heat of hydration at different temperatures; the loss of heat was minimized using insulation. Both the slump time and the complete ageing time of the air volume were found to be 120 min at $20^{\circ}C$ and 40 min at $40^{\circ}C$. In the case when the cooling method for mixing water was used and in the case when a retarder was used, the initial and final sets by penetration resistance were delayed, and the delay decreased with increasing air temperature. For the heat of hydration, the cooling method for mixing water not only lowered the maximum temperature but also delayed its attainment. However, the use of a retarder had no effect on the maximum temperature. Moreover, in the early ages (e.g., 3 and 7 days), the pressure strength of the concrete was lower than that of plain cement. However, the strength of 28-day concrete met the standard construction specifications.
In this paper an experimental program was launched to determine the mechanical and durability properties of spall repair materials (RCC: 3 items, PCC: 2 items, PC: 3 items). Test items were mechanical property tests such as setting times, strengths, modulus of elasticity, plastic shrinkage, and durability tests such as dynamic modulus ratio, bond property with freeze-thaw, water absorption, chemical resistance, ultraviolet exposure. Modulus of the PC products exhibits ductile while the modulus is in the order of RCC > PCC > PC. At early ages the PC products experience higher plastic shrinkage than others, henceforth stable at 28 days. Other test results such as dynamic modulus ratio, absorption, and chemical resistance show that the PCs are superior to the PCCs and the RCCs. Except for PC-2, all patch materials had bond strength more than 1.3MPa after freeze-thaw cycles of 200~300 while the PCs and the PCCs seem to be better than the RCCs. With 500 hours of ultraviolet exposure, all patch materials showed to have no crack or deterioration at the surface.
