  • An oligomeric diol was utilized as a modifier for the reaction rate and mechanical properties of a RT-castable polyurethane elastomer. Both the reaction rate and the tensile strength of the blend samples, in which the modifier and the base resins were mixed with one-shot method, showed an exponential decrease as the increase of modifier concentration. Thermal analysis method of Kissinger was also effectively applied in the present study, showing good linearity in the plot of ln $(q/T^2_p)$ vs. $(1/T_p)$ and activation energy $E_a$ of 44.80 kJ/mol, which is similar to the general castable polyurethane. In the mechanical properties, remarkable decrease of strength was found by the addition of modifier concentration range up to about 20 phr, while characteristic elongation property of the elastomer, high elongation at lower strength, was observed over 20 phr of the modifier. Exponential decrease of the break strength of the blend sample exhibited that the mechanical properties of the blend might be considerably sensitive to the modifier concentration.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the dynamic properties, especially the damping and fatigue properites, of NR vulcanizates and to find out the vulcanizate which can be used as damping materials in industry. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. In the ODR test, the S-2 vulcanizate was the fastest one in terms of having reached to optimum cure times($t_{90}$) and, with the same formula, when 50phr of HAF carbon black loaded, the shortest optimum cure times has shown. 2. The S - 2 vulcanizate was the best than the others in the physical properties. In aging properties, however, the E - 1 vulcanizate appeared to be better than the other vulcanizates. 3. The results of the RDS test for the NR vulcanization system under the condition of 0.1% strain amplitude and 1 Hz frequency showed no connection between Tg and the the nature of the crosslinking system, but 50phr loading of HAF carbon black increased Tg. The damping values of vulcanizates in the elastic region showed a strong relations the damping values and the crosslinking system. The S - 2 vulcanizate with higher crosslink density had lower damping values than other vulcanizates, and furthermore, the SH - 2 vulcanizates with 50phr loading of HAF carbon black increased the damping values. 4. The Goodrich Flexometer test showed that the heat buildup for the gum NR vulcanizates was less than for those which contained 50phr of HAF carbon black. In particular, the fatigue life of the vulcanizate with lower damping values appeared to be longer than that of the vulcanizates with higher damping values. In the fatigue test, the increasment of the loading or the temperature, applied to the vulcanizates, appeared to be shorten their fatigue life.

  • The experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of metallic particulate filler on the mechanical properties and the thermal properties of epoxy resin system filled with Cu powder. As Cu contents increased, the tensile strength, surface hardness and $T_d$ decreased. $T_g$ increased and decreased at 300 phr. $E_d$ decreased and increased at 200 phr, because the thermal conducting path of filler was formed and dissipated thermal stress.

  • In this paper thermal and mechanical properties of elastic epoxy for applying high voltage products were investigated. Glass transition temperature(Tg) of elastic epoxies can't find form room temperature to $200^{\circ}$ by DSC. It occurred weight reduce on $285^{\circ}$ and $451^{\circ}$ by thermo-gravimeter. The first temperature was effected on addictives and the other was epoxy's character. Max, tensile strain showed $28.3kgf/cm^2$ at 20% of mechanical stress in addictives 35phr. SEM micrograph of the fracture surface observed in void and tearing of elastic epoxy at addictives 35phr. The other side, SEM micrograph of rigid epoxy showed the trace which broke.

  • The mutagenesis-enhancing plasmid pKM101 and its mutant pSL4 were introduced into Escherichia coli B/r strains possessing different DNA repair capacities ($phr^{-}, recA^{-}, uvrA^{-}, uvrB^{-}$) and determined the protection effect and mutagenecity for UV and MNNG. The mutability and protection effect of plasmid pKM101 and pSL4 were affected by different DNA repair capacity. The mutagenecity and resistance of two plasmids were increased against UV and MNNG, and plasmid pSL4 had a higher effect than pKM101. We suggest that the functional differences between pKM101 and pSL4 is due to the variety of mutator gene.

  • In this work, the blend system of epoxy and PMR-15 polyimide is investigated in terms of the cure behaviors and thermal stabilities. The cure behaviors are studied in DSC measurements and thermal stabilities are also carried out by TGA analysis. DDM (4, 4'-diamino diphenyl methane) is used as curing agent for EP and the content of PMR-15 is varied within 0, 5, 10, 35, and 20 phr to neat EP. As a result, the cure activation energy ($E_a$) is increased at 10 phr of PMR-15, compared with that of neat EP. From the TGA results of EP/PMR-15 blend system, the thermal stabilities based in the initial decomposed temperature (IDT) and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) are increased with increasing the PMR-15 content. The fracture toughness, measured in the context of critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$), shows a similar behavior with $E_a$. This result is probably due to the crosslinking developed by the interactions between intermolecules in the polymer chains.

  • To improve the adhesive strength of natural rubber (NR) for a seismic isolation damper, citraconic acid-g-NR (CCA-g-NR) was synthesized via the melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto NR using an azobisisnomerobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator. Subsequently, the influence of CCA and AIBN concentrations on the graft ratio G/R (%) and graft efficiency G/E (%) of the CCA-g-NR was investigated. The optimum CCA and AIBN concentrations required to achieve the desired G/R (3.49%) and G/E (49.8%) were found to be 7 phr and 0.13 phr, respectively. Additionally, we studied the influence of CCA-g-NR concentration on the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 300%), adhesive strength, and cure characteristics of the rubber compound in the seismic isolation damper. As the concentration of CCA-g-NR increased, the elongation at break and adhesive strength of the compound increased, whereas its tensile strength and modulus at 300% decreased. Moreover, as the concentration increased, the maximum torque decreased and the scorch time was delayed to obtain an optimal vulcanization time.

  • The aim of this study was to develop the noise and vibration damping wood-based composites by using viscoelastic polymer materials. Polyvinylchloride(PVC) was plasticized with 20-140 phr bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(DOP) and the dynamic tensile mechanical properties were measured at 110Hz and approximate temperature range -100 to 150$^{\circ}$ using a Rheovibron Instrument. The PVC/DOP blends were shown to be compatible in all proportions, and both T(E”$_{max}$) and T(tan${\delta}_{max}$) shifted to the lower temperature side as the DOP content increased. The vibration damping properties of wood/polymer composites were measured using the Rheovibron instrument in a bending mode. The composite damping factor(tan ${\delta}_{c}$) of wood /PVC-DOP/wood sandwich structure correlated with the loss factor and that of the coated structure correlated with the loss modulus(E”) of the polymer layer. In addition, the sandwich structure was found to be more effective in damping than the coated structure. The logarithmic decrement (${\Delta}$c) curve of a sandwich structure, which was determined by the free-free flexural vibration method was similar in shape to the tan ${\delta}_{c}$ curve.

  • In this work, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/polyetherimide (PEI) blends were cured using 4,4-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM). And the effects of addition of different PEI contents to neat DGEBA were investigated in the thermal properties and fracture toughness of the blends. The contents of contents of containing PEI were varied in 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 phr. The cure activation energies ($E_a$) of the cured specimens were determined by Kissinger equation and the mechanical interfacial properties of the specimens were performed by critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). Also their surfaces were examined by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the surface energetics of blends was determined by contact angles. As a result, $E_a$ and $K_{IC}$ showed maximum values in the 7.5 phr PEI. This result was interpreted in the increment of the network structure of DGEBA/PEI blends. Also, the surface energetics of the DGEBA/PEI blends showed a similar behavior with the results of $K_{IC}$. This was probably due to the improving of specific or polor component of the surface free energy of DGEBA/PEI blends, resulting in increasing the hydrogen bonding of the hydroxyl and imide groups of the blends.
