  • Objectives: Recommended Menu (RM) prepared according to the Target Pattern expected to meet the dietary reference intake (DRI) of nutrients. Nutritional adequacy of RM in 'DRI for Koreans 2015' were analyzed to verify whether such expectation was fulfilled. Methods: Dishes in RM are categorized by 5 food groups, and number and types of dishes for main meal and between-meals were analyzed. The energy and 12 nutrients (protein, dietary fiber, Ca, P, Fe, Na, K, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C) contents in 10 RMs were calculated using the food composition table (CD) in 'DRI for Koreans'. Energy, energy contribution ratio, and nutrient contents in 10 RMs for 18 age groups were evaluated based on the 'DRI for Koreans 2015'. Results: Number of dishes per meal were 4.83, and representative table setting consisted of cooked rice + soup (or stew) +3 side dishes. Energy contents of RM were 75~109% of estimated energy requirement (EER). None of the RM met the DRI of all 12 nutrients examined. Calcium was the most insufficient nutrient. Only 1-2 years' RM met the DRI, all the other RMs did not meet the calcium DRI. Dietary fiber and potassium contents were also insufficient in most RM. In adult male's RM, only 1 nutrient, i.e. calcium did not meet the DRI, but in female adult's RM, 5~6 nutrients did not meet the DRI. Energy contribution ratio of carbohydrate, protein, and fat in RM were 59.0~70.4%, 15.7~17.5%, 12.1~23.5%, respectively. And 4 RMs out of 10 exceeded the upper limit of acceptable macro-nutrient distribution range (AMDR) of carbohydrate and 3 RMs out of 10 RM were below the lower limit of fat AMDR. Contribution ratio of nutrients were ${\geq}40%$ by food groups were as follows: grain group in energy and carbohydrate; meat fish egg legume group in fat, protein, and niacin; vegetables group in dietary fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C; milk dairy products group in calcium. Conclusions: RM prepared according to the Target Pattern did not meet nutritional adequacy as expected. Especially calcium, potassium, and dietary fiber contents are needed to be increased in many RMs. Further, energy content in RM needs to be adjusted for fat sugar food group assigned in Target Pattern and condiment.

  • In the present study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of heat-killed Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and live E. faecalis on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The BPH rat model was established by administering male rats with testosterone propionate (TP, 5 mg/kg, in corn oil) via subcutaneous injections daily for four weeks after castration. The rats were divided into five groups: Con, corn oil-injected (s.c.) + DW administration; BPH, TP (5 mg/kg, s.c.) + DW administration; BPH+K_EF, TP (5 mg/kg, s.c.) + heat-killed E. faecalis (7.5 × 1012 CFU/g, 2.21 mg/kg) administration; BPH+L_EF, TP (5 mg/kg, s.c.) + live E. faecalis (1 × 1011 CFU/g, 166 mg/kg) administration; BPH+Fi, TP (5 mg/kg, s.c.) + finasteride (1 mg/kg) administration. In both of BPH+K_EF and BPH+L_EF groups, the prostate weight decreased and histological changes due to TP treatment recovered to the level of the Con group. Both of these groups also showed regulation of androgen-signaling factors, growth factors, and apoptosis-related factors in prostate tissue. E. faecalis exhibited an inhibitory effect on benign prostatic hyperplasia, and even heat-killed E. faecalis showed similar efficacy on the live cells in the BPH rat model. As the first investigation into the effect of heat-killed and live E. faecalis on BPH, our study suggests that heat-killed E. faecalis might be a food additive candidate for use in various foods, regardless of heat processing.

  • Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic data have been obtained from the Cretaceous rocks (Yeongdong Group, volcanic rock, and intrusive rocks) which are exposed in the Yeongdong Basin. The characteristic remanent directions of these rocks, which are mainly carried by magnetite and hematite of single and pseudo-single domain sizes, are normally magnetized (Yeongdong Group: $D/I=29.6/59.0^{\circ}C$, k=75.7, ${\alpha}_{95}=3.3^{\circ}$, N=25 sites, paleopole at $198.0^{\circ}E$, $66.4^{\circ}N$, K=46.1, $A_{95}=4.3^{\circ}$; volcanic rock: $D/I=352.8/44.1^{\circ}$, k=44.2, ${\alpha}_{95}=18.8^{\circ}$, N=3 sites, paleopole at $340.0^{\circ}E$, $78.8^{\circ}N$, $K=49.8^{\circ}E$, $A_{95}=17.6^{\circ}$X>; intrusive rocks: $D/I=358.4/51.9^{\circ}C$, k=20.0, ${\alpha}_{95}=13.8^{\circ}$, N=7 sites, paleopole at $338.1^{\circ}E$, $86.8^{\circ}N$, K=13.5, $A_{95}=17.1^{\circ}$). The stepwise unfolding of the characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) of the Yeongdong Group reveals that a maximum value of k is observed at 60% of unfolding with $D/I=13.0/58.6^{\circ}$ (k=124.62, ${\alpha}_{95}2.6^{\circ}$) indicating that the ChRM was aquired during ti1ting of the strata. This remagnetized ChRM in the sedimentary strata is due to acquisition of geomagnetic field direction at the time of formation of authigenic magnetic minerals, although it is not totally ruled out that the formation of authigenic magnetic minerals was affected indirect1y by the elevated temperature originated from the volcanic and intrusive rocks which intruded between Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary.

  • Photosynthetic inhibition to temperature were conducted with ginseng(4 year old) and tobacco(var. Bulgaria). The plants were kept under various temperature conditions from 1$0^{\circ}C$ to 4$0^{\circ}C$ and 440$\mu$E/$m^2$/sec for 3 and 6hrs, and net $CO_2$ uptake were measured after 2hrs at $25^{\circ}C$. Photosynthetic optimal leaf temperature of ginseng was 21$^{\circ}C$ and tobacco was $25^{\circ}C$. Stomatal resistance and mesophyll resistance increased at high temperature. Especially, stomatal resistance seemed to have a significant role in determining the temperature responses of photosynthesis. In tobacco photosynthetic capacity was not changed by temperature treatment for 3hrs. However, 6hrs exposure reduced 8% of net photosynthesis at 4$0^{\circ}C$ and 12% at 1$0^{\circ}C$. Ginseng plants exposed for 6hrs at 4$0^{\circ}C$ lost photosynthetic capacity by 83%. Temperature responses of ginseng were very sensitive at above-optimum temperature resulting greater thermal inhibition other than photoinhibition.

  • Gene expression in five tissues of the abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) was investigated using an expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis. Randomly selected clones were obtained from cDNA libraries constructed with gill (GI), digestive diverticula(DD), hepatopancreas (HP), foot/mucus (FM) and rectangular muscle (RM). Of 1,235 clonesanalyzed (288 clones for GI, DD, HP each,166 for FM, and 205 for RM), 741 (60.0%) clones in total turned out to share significant similarity with the sequences from NCBI GenBank (less than 10/sup -3/ of e-values), 423 sequences showed poor similarity (> 10/sup -3/), and 71 sequences didn't match with any sequences in GenBank. The percent unique sequence (singleton) was ranged from 56.1% (RM) to 74.7% (FM) among libraries. On the other hand, overall percent singleton was 55.3% when all the ESTs from five libraries were assembled into contigs. Analysis of the organisms represented by the best hit for each EST (e-values < 10/sup -3/) showed that 23.8% matched with mammalian entries, 24.0% with mollusks, 14.4% with insects, 11.6% with fish and 26.2% with others. The expressed patterns differed among the tissues when judged by the categorization of the sequences from each library into 10 broad functional classes. In all the libraries, the class I (no hit o. poor similarity) was the largest category with an average of 40.1%. This largest class was followed by class V (general metabolisms) in DD (21.9%), GI (14.6%) and HP (16.7%), while the 'cell structure and motility'(class VI) was the second largest class in remaining two libraries (31.2% for RM and 9.6% for FM). The class IX (cell division and proliferation) was the smallest class in all the libraries (less than 3%). This report provides the first tissue-specific lists of expressed abalone genes, which could be a fundamental basis for genomics program of abalone species.

  • Objectives : The present study was to investigate the effect of extract of Chelidonii herba (ECH) on the proliferation and activation of eosinophils which were prepared from lung cells of asthma-induced mouse by ovalbumin (OVA) treatment. Methods : C57BL/6 mouse was exposed to OVA three times a week for 6 weeks. The mouse lung tissues were dissected out, chopped and dossiciated with collagenase (1 ${\mu}g$/ml). Eosinophils were activated by rIL-3/rmIL-5 co-treatments. The lung cells were treated with ECH, incubated for 48 hr at $37^{\circ}C$, and analyzed by flow cytometery, ELISA, RT-PCR, and immuno-histochemical analysis. Results : In FACS analysis, number of granulocyte/lymphocyte, $CD3e^-$/$CCR3^+$, $CD3e^+$/$CD69^+$, $CD4^+$ and $CD23^+$/$B220^+$ in asthma-induced lung cells were significantly decreased by ECH treatment compared to the control group. And mRNA expression for IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, CCR3 and eotaxin in asthma-induced lung cells, which was induced by rIL-3 plus rmIL-5 treatments, was significantly decreased by ECH treatment. In ELISA analysis, production levels of IL-3, IL-5, IL-13 and histamine in asthma-induced lung cells, which were induced by rIL-3 plus rmIL-5 co-treatment, were significantly decreased by ECH treatment. ECH treatments significantly inhibited the proliferation of eosinohils prepared from asthma-induced mouse lung tissues compared to the non-ECH treated control cells. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that ECH treatment significantly decreased the levels of eosipnphil activation compared to non-treated cells. Conclusions : The present data suggested that Chelidonium majus L. may have an effect on the inhibition of parameters associated with asthma responses in eosinpophils, and thus implicate the possibility for the clinical application of Chelidonium majus L.

  • To develop an effective utilization method of skipjack tuna viscera, fish meal by an improved fermentation method(FFMA) was prepared by fermentation of the solid materials separated from autoclaved viscera with Aspergillus oryzae for 72 hours and by adding the concentrated soluble extracts separated from autoclaved viscera to the fermenting solid materials during fermentation, and FFMA fish meal was compared with the fish meals prepared by Kato mathod(FFMN) and conventional nonfermenting method(NFM). FFMN fish meal was prepared by fermenting the solid materials separated from autoclaved viscera with Aspergillus oryzae for 17 hours without adding the soluble extract. The extracts from FFMA fish meal(FFMA-E) and raw viscera(RM-E) were also prepared respectively after digestion with proteases obtained from Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus oryzae and compared with each other on the contents of free amino acids. The peroxide values decreased greatly in contents of $Vitamin\;B_{1},\;B_{2}\;and\;C$ significantly increased in FFMA fish meal compared with those of other fish meals. The total free amino acid content of FFMA-E was significantly higher then that of RM-E. The total free essential amino acid content also greatly increased in FFMA-E in which threonine, methionine and lysine showed remarkable increments. Almost all individual nonessential amino acids were higher in FFMA-E then in RM-E. The content of taurine, a nonprotein amino acid, greatly increased compared with other nonprotein amino acids in both extracts.

  • In this paper, Artificial Neural Network(ANN) based motion classification algorithm is proposed to classify wrist motions using surface electromyograms(sEMG). surface EMGs are obtained from two electrodes placed on the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle and extensor carpi ulnaris muscle of 26 subjects under no strain condition during wrist motions and used to recognize wrist motions such as up, down, left, right, and rest. Feature is extracted from obtained EMG signals in time domain for fast processing and used to classify wrist motions using ANN. DAMV, DASDV, MAV, and RMS were used as features and accuracies of motion classification based on ANN were 98.03% for DAMV, 97.97% for DASDV, 96.95% for MAV, 96.82% for RMS.
