  • If a moving target has a linear characteristics, the Kalman filter can estimate relatively accurate the location of a target, but this performance depends on how the dynamic status characteristics of the target is accurately modeled. In many practical problems of tracking a maneuvering target, a simple kinematic model can fairly accurately describe the target dynamics for a wide class of maneuvers. However, since the target can exhibit a wide range of dynamic characteristics, no fixed SKF(Simple Kalman filter) can be matched to estimate, to the required accuracy, the states of the target for every specific maneuver. In this paper, a new AKF(Active Kalman filter) is proposed to solve this problem The process noise covariance level of the Kalman filter is adjusted at each time step according to the study result which uses the neural network algorithm. It is demonstrated by means of a computer simulation that the tracking capability of the proposed AKF(Active Kalman filter) is better than that of the SKF(Simple Kalman Filter).

  • X-ray crystallographic studies of the deoxy form of human adult hemoglobin (Hb A) have shown that ${\beta}99Asp$ is hydrogen bonded to both ${\alpha}42Tyr$ and ${\alpha}97Asn$ in the ${\alpha}_1{\beta}_2$ subunit interface, suggesting that the essential role of ${\beta}99Asp$ is to stabilize the deoxy-Hb by creating the intersubunit hydrogen bond. In particular, for Hb Kempsey (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}Asn$), molecular dynamics simulation indicated that a new hydrogen bond involving ${\beta}99Asn$ can be induced by replacing ${\alpha}42Tyr$ with a strong hydrogen-bond acceptor such as Asp. Designed mutant recombinant (r) Hb (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}Asn$, ${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$) have been produced in the Escherichia coli expression system and have shown that functional defects of Hb Kempsey could be compensated by the ${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$ substitution. However, as the ${\alpha}42 Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$ mutation has never been reported before, it is still possible that the functional properties of r Hb (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}Asn$, ${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$) may be due to the mutation itself. Thus, it is required to produce r Hb (${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$) and r Hb Kempsey (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}AsnX$( as controls, and to compare their properties with those of r Hb (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}Asn$, ${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$). r Hb (${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp$) could not be purified because it is an unstable hemoglobin which forms Heinz bodies. r Hb Kempsey (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}Asn$) exhibits very high oxygen affinity and greatly reduced cooperativity. Thus, r Hb (${\beta}99Asp{\rightarrow}Asn$) and r Hb (${\alpha}42Tyr{\rightarrow}Asp)$ compensate each other.

  • The FDS is one of the most used programs for fire analysis and needs an optimal grid selection for an accurate analysis. This study selected various grid aspect ratios (ARs) for selection of optimal grid and analyzed them with FDS v 6.1.2. A calculation time of 10 min. was used, which is enough to obtain the time average value of temperature changes. Temperature, visibility, and the time average value of mass balance are obtained from 200-600 s, which is a period of maintaining quasi-steady state. Two polyurethane fires of 1 [MW] and 2 [MW] in two enclosures of $10{\times}10{\times}3[m^3]$ and $20{\times}20{\times}3[m^3]$ were considered. Time variations of heat release rates, temperature, visibility, and mass balance were compared for ARs from 1-6. The heat release rates were accurate for all aspect ratios regardless of fire and enclosure sizes. The quasi-steady state temperature and visibility were well predicted for $AR{\leq}5$. Temperature drop and skewness of mass conservation, however, increased with increasing aspect ratio. Therefore, careful investigation of the grid size is recommended in performance-based design when $AR{\geq}3$, where temperature and visibility in early stage of a fire are important parameters. For accurate simulations of enclosure fires, grid sizes of 0.1~0.2 [m] and smaller in the vertical direction and $AR{\leq}2$ are recommended.

  • This paper proposes Kalman Filter-based relative navigation algorithms for proximity tasks such as rendezvous/docking/cluster-operation of spacecraft using PSD Sensors and Infrared Beacon Modules. Numerical simulations are performed for comparative analysis of the performance of each relative-navigation technique. Based on the operation principle and optical modeling of the PSD Sensor and the Infrared Beacon Module used in the relative navigation algorithm, a measurement model for the Kalman filter is constructed. The Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) and the Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF) are used as probabilistic relative navigation based on measurement fusion to utilize kinematics and dynamics information on translational and rotation motions of satellites. Relative position and relative attitude estimation performance of two filters is compared. Especially, through the simulation of various scenarios, performance changes are also investigated depending on the number of PSD Sensors and IR Beacons in target and chaser satellites.

  • To examine the problem structure of balanced regional development policy and identify the causes of the gap between the capital and non-capital areas, this study examined the causal structure in terms of the concentration and distribution of functions in the metropolitan area and non-capital area and explored the policy leverage. As a research method, the causal map was drawn using System Dynamics techniques and policy leverage was derived through an exploration of the feedback structure. In particular, the causes of the problems in balanced regional development policies were approached by system accidents rather than by single-circuit accidents, and causality analysis was performed among the variables constituting balanced regional development policies based on system accidents. In particular, it singled out 31 variables, developed 13 feedback loops, and confirmed four major policy leverages, including relocation of the capital function, local decentralization policies, consistent development, and investment practices centered on the NonCapital Area. Subsequently, a follow-up study by computer simulation is needed by modeling the structure of the system to identify the ripple effect of the policies of the Capital Area on the NonCapital Area.

  • A capsule train runs inside a sub-vacuum tube and can reach very high speed due to the low air resistance. A capsule train uses a superconducting electrodynamic suspension (SC-EDS) method for levitation, which allows for a large levitation gap and does not require gap control. However, SC-EDS has inherent characteristics such as the large gap variation and a small damping effect in the levitation force, which can degrade the running stability and ride comfort. To overcome this, a stability improvement device should be designed and applied based on dynamic analysis. In this study, a 1/10 small-scale testbed was developed to replicate the dynamic characteristics of a capsule train and investigate the performance of stability improvement devices. The testbed is composed of a 6-degree-of-freedom Stewart platform for the realization of bogie motion, a secondary suspension with a running stabilization device, and a carbody. Based on the dynamic similarity law proposed by Jaschinski, the small-scale testbed was manufactured, and a bogie motion algorithm was applied with the consideration of guideway irregularity and levitation stiffness. The experimental results from the testbed were compared with simulation results to investigate the performance of the testbed.

  • Pest population density models are very important to monitor the initial occurrence and to understand the continuous fluctuation pattern of pest in pest management. This is one of the major issues in agriculture because these predictions make pesticides more effective and environmental impact of pesticides less. In this study, we combined and predicted the mortality change of pest caused by pesticides with temperature change and population dynamic model. Sensitive strain of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) with kidney bean leaf as host was exposed to mixed acaricide, Acrinathrin-Spiromesifen and organotin acaricide, Azocyclotin, at 20, 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. There was significant difference in mortality of T. urticae among pesticides and temperatures. We used DYMEX to simulate population density of T. urticae and predicted that the initial management time and number of chemical control would be changed in the future with climate change. There would be implications for strategies for pest management and selection process of pesticide in the future corresponding climate change.

  • This paper describes the design and evaluation of a driving mode decision algorithm for automated driving for merge situations on highways. For the development of a highly automated driving control algorithm for merge situations, the driving mode decision is crucial for merging appropriately. There are two driving modes: lane keeping and lane changing (merging). The merge mode decision is determined based on the state of the surrounding vehicles and the remaining length of the merge lane. In the merge mode decision algorithm, merge possibility and the desired merge position are decided to change the lane safely and quickly. A safety driving envelope is defined based on the desired driving mode using the information on the surrounding vehicles' behaviors. To obtain the desired steering angle and longitudinal acceleration for maintaining the subject vehicle in the safe driving envelope, a motion planning controller is designed using model predictive control (MPC), with constraints that are decided considering the vehicle dynamics, safe driving envelope, and actuator limit. The proposed control algorithm has been evaluated via computer simulation studies.

  • A system dynamic model was developed to predict food grain production under the dynamic consideration of the production circumstance and inputs such as farm population, investment on agriculture, arable land, extensive technology and weather. By using the model, the variation of the food grain production from 1978 to 2008 was examined. The results of the model output says it is desirable that the persistent and long-term program should be studied to get necessary food grain production under the variational inputs and circumstances.

  • Oyster mushroom farm which could not meet optimum temperature range yields non-uniform sized, low quality products. Thus, this study, utilizing STAR CCM+, one of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, analyzed the impact of air circulation and temperature distribution. Methods: After we visited numerous mushroom farms, we measured the temperature at the discharge ports of heaters, fan capacity, and the locations of the air circulators in the farms. According to the data, most mushroom growers installed the heaters near the entrance and discharge ports of the heaters at the third growing bed on the same height as the heaters in the entrance. The temperature at the discharge port of heater was $1,26^{\circ}C$, and the fan capacity was 4,500 $m^3$/hr. The air circulator was placed in the center of the mushroom farm 50cm above the ground, and its capacity of inlet port was 1,100 $m^3$/hr and discharge port 1,600 $m^3$/hr. The mushroom farm was insulated. Results: According to the analysis of the temperature distribution in the vertical plane of the entrance side, no air circulation causes the high temperature zone of 296~299K at the discharge port of the heater to take up 34% of area while the operation of air circulators causes it to occupy only 9%. This means that not using air circulators leads to a concentration of high temperature at the discharge port near the entrance. In addition, with the results of the analysis of the temperature distribution in the vertical planes of the center, no air circulation causes the temperature zone of 295~298K at the discharge port of the heater to take up 48% of area while the operation of air circulators causes it to occupy 80%. This shows that the high outlet port temperature disseminated to the center. Conclusions: After ninety minute operation of both heater and air circulator, the interior temperature became stabilized in the mushroom farm. Air circulation made the high temperature at the discharge port disseminate to the center and exit in the farm and equalize the temperature distribution.
