  • The aim of the present article is to study the micropolar thermoelastic interactions in an infinite Kelvin-Voigt type viscoelastic thermally conducting plate. The coupled dynamic thermoelasticity and generalized theories of thermoelasticity, namely, Lord and Shulman's and Green and Lindsay's are employed by assuming the mechanical behaviour as dynamic to study the problem. The model has been simplified by using Helmholtz decomposition technique and the resulting equations have been solved by using variable separable method to obtain the secular equations in isolated mathematical conditions for homogeneous isotropic micropolar thermo-viscoelastic plate for symmetric and skew-symmetric wave modes. The dispersion curves, attenuation coefficients, amplitudes of stresses and temperature distribution for symmetric and skew-symmetric modes are computed numerically and presented graphically for a magnesium crystal.

  • Electron whistlers frequently excite proton whistlers. The proton whistlers appear on the dynamic spectrum as rising tones, which start after the reception of a short electron whistler, asymptotically approaching the local proton gyro-frequency. The proton whistlers are dispersed forms of lightning impulses and their dispersion can be explained by the effects of heavy ions such as H+ and He+ on the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in the ionosphere. In the ionosphere, a right-handed circularly-polarized electron whistler becomes coupled to a left-handed circularly-polarized proton whistler when the frequency becomes close to a cross-over frequency. By adopting the multi-fluid numerical wave model, we examine how the mode coupling varies as the ion composition changes along altitude in the mid-latitude ionosphere. The time histories and dynamic spectra of electric fields are presented. In addition, we compare our results with the previous theoretical and observational studies.

  • In this paper, a comparison of various random vibration and deterministic dynamic analyses of cable-stayed bridges subjected to asynchronous ground motion is presented. Different random vibration methods are included to determine the dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge for various ground motion wave velocities. As a numerical example the Jindo Bridge located in South Korea is chosen and a 413 DOF mathematical model is employed for this bridge. The results obtained from a spectral analysis approach are compared with those of two random vibration based response spectrum methods and a deterministic method. The analyses suggest that the structural responses usually show important amplifications depending on the decreasing ground motion wave velocities.

  • The spectral element model is known to provide very accurate structural dynamic characteristics, while reducing the number of degree-of-freedom to resolve the computational and cost problems. Thus, the spectral element model for an axially moving Bernoulli-Euler beam subjected to axial tension is developed in the present paper. The high accuracy of the spectral element model is then verified by comparing its solutions with the conventional finite element solutions and exact analytical solutions. The effects of the moving speed and axial tension on the vibration characteristics, wave characteristics, and the static and dynamic stabilities of a moving beam are investigated.

  • Recently SLAMECKA suggested the mathematical dynamic arc model of the SF6 gas circuit breaker [1]. The author applied the above dynamic arc model to the E.H.V. transmission line and investigated the interrupting capability of the SF6 gas circuit breaker. In particular the Runge-Kutta-England numerical method suitable for the use in systems that involve nonlinear dynamic arc and traveling wave was used by converting the current source into the voltage source in the DOMMEL's method [2]. The successful computer resultls were obtained and it was found that the arc time constant and the second derivative of the arc conductance are closely related to the interrupting capability of the SF6 gas circuit breaker.

  • This paper presents the development of a simulator for an industrial robot. The simulator is characterized by a fully integrated dynamic model and a hardware oriented control scheme. The dynamic model includes the actuator dynamics as well as the manipulator dynamics to integrate the entire dynamics of the robot system. On the other hand, the control scheme is oriented as a hardware structure which is usually implemented in the industrial robot. That is to say, a conventional PI control law is used to regulate the position, the speed, and the current. A Pulse Wave Modulation (PWM)generator modulates the supplied voltage to the actuator. Since the simulator is consistent with the industrial robot system, it provides the essential design concepts for the development process of the robot. In practice, the simulator is applied to the SCARA robot which has been developed in GSIS. Here, it investigates the characteristics and performance of the robot with changing design parameters. Thus, the investigation furnishes criteria for the selection of acfuator, control gain, trajectory planning, etc.

  • For cylindrical shells, the closed-form solutions are limited only to the cases with special boundary and/or loading conditions. Though the finite element method is certainly a powerful solution approach for the general structural dynamics problems, it is known to provide reliable solutions only in the low frequency region due to the inherent high sensitivities of structural and numerical modeling errors. Instead, the spectral element method has been proved to provide extremely accurate dynamic responses even in the high frequency region. Since the wave characteristics of a cylindrical shell becomes identical to that of a flat plate as the frequency increases, an equivalent plate model (EPM) representing the high-frequency dynamic characteristics of a cylindrical shell is introduced herein. The EPM-based spectral element analysis solutions are compared with the known analytical solutions for the corresponding cylindrical shell to confirm the validity of the present modeling approach.

  • In this paper, it is aimed to determine the stochastic response of a suspension bridge subjected to spatially varying ground motions considering the geometric nonlinearity. Bosphorus Suspension Bridge built in Turkey and connects Europe to Asia in Istanbul is selected as a numerical example. The spatial variability of the ground motion is considered with the incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The importance of site-response effect which arises from the difference in the local soil conditions at different support points of the structure is also investigated. At the end of the study, mean of the maximum and variance response values obtained from the spatially varying ground motions are compared with those of the specialised cases of the ground motion model. It is seen that each component of the spatially varying ground motion model has important effects on the dynamic behaviour of the bridge. The response values obtained from the general excitation case, which also includes the site-response effect causes larger response values than those of the homogeneous soil condition cases. The variance values calculated for the general excitation case are dominated by dynamic component at the deck and Asian side tower. The response values obtained for the site-response effect alone are larger than the response values obtained for the incoherence and wave-passage effects, separately. It can be concluded that suspension bridges are sensitive to the spatial variability of ground motion. Therefore, the incoherence, the wave-passage and especially the site-response effects should be considered in the stochastic analysis of this type of engineering structures.
