To investigate the morphology characteristics of air layer in the air cavity, a numerical method with the combination of RANS equations and VOF two-phase-flow model is proposed for a plate with air cavity. Based on the model above, the dynamic and developmental process of air layer in the air cavity is studied. Numerical results indicate that the air layer in the plate's air cavity exhibits the dynamic state of morphology and the wavelength of air layer becomes larger with the increasing speed. The morphology of air layer agrees with the Froude similarity law and the formation of the air layer is not affected by the parameters of the cavity, however, the wave pattern of the air layer is influenced by the parameters of the cavity. The stable air layer under the air cavity is important for the resistance reduction for the air layer drag reduction.

The disaster preventing system using vegetation has been growing in the field of coastal engineering in recent years. To analyze wave and flow fields under nonlinear interactions between tsunami and vegetation, the purpose of this study is to evaluate newly-developed 3-D numerical wave tank including energy dissipation by tsunami-vegetation interaction based on existing N-S solver with porous body model. Comparing numerical results using mean drag coefficient and dynamic drag coefficient due to Reynolds number to existing experimental results it is revealed that computed results considering the dynamic drag coefficient are in good agreement with the laboratory test results for time-domain waveform. In addition, the calculated transmission coefficients of solitary waves in various vegetation densities and incident wave heights are also in good agreement with the experimental values. This confirms the validity and effectiveness of the developed 3-D numerical wave tank with the fluid resistance by vegetation.

Accurate estimation of the wave-induced pore water pressure in the seabed is key factor in studying the stability of the seabed in the vicinity of coastal structure. Most of the existing numerical models for wave structure seabed interaction have been linked through applying hybrid numerical technique which is analysis method separating the wave field and seabed regime. Therefore, it is necessary to develope a numerical model f3r simulating accurately wave$\cdot$structure$\cdot$ seabed interaction under wave loadings by the single domain approach for wave field and seabed regime together. In this study, direct numerical simulation is newly proposed. In this model, modeled fluid drag has been used to detect the hydraulic properties according to the varied geometrical shape inside the porous media by considering the turbulence resistance as well as laminar resistance. Contrary to hybrid numerical technique, direct numerical simulation avoids the explicit formulation of the boundary conditions at the fluid/porous media interface. A good agreement has been obtained by the comparison between existed experimental results by hydraulic model test and direct numerical simulation results far wave $\cdot$structure$\cdot$seabed interaction. Therefore, the newly proposed numerical model is a powerful tool for estimating the nonlinear dynamic responses among a structure, its seabed foundation and water waves.

For cylindrical shells, the closed-form solutions are confined to the specific boundary and/or loading conditions. Though the finite element method is certainly a powerful solution approach for the structural dynamics problems, it has been well known to provide the solution reliable only in the low frequency region due to the inherent high sensitivities of structual and numerical modeling errors. Instead, the spectral element method has been proved to provide accurate dynamic characteristics of a structure even at the ultrasonic frequency region. Since the wave characteristic of a cylindrical shell becomes identical to that fo a flat plate as the frequency increases, an equivalent plate model (EPM) representing the high-frequency dynamic characteristics of the cylindrical shell is introduced herein. The EPM-based spectral element analysis solutions are compared with the known analytical solutions for the cylindrical shells to confirm the validity of the present modeling approach.

The acoustic optimization of a swirl coaxial jet injector mounted upstream a combustion chamber is investigated to tackle combustion instabilities. The least damped modes are extracted with the help of the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD). The sensitivity of the heat release perturbation to the velocity perturbation for the second longitudinal mode is investigated by combining the Crocco's equation and the inhomogeneous wave equation and computing the flame transfer function (FTF). DMD and FTF results agree in terms of the optimized injector length.
A series of wind tunnel sectional model dynamic tests of a twin-deck bridge were conducted at the CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility (WWTF) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to investigate the effects of gap-width on the self-excited vibrations and the dynamic and aerodynamic characteristics of the bridge. Five 2.9 m long models with different gap-widths were fabricated and suspended in the wind tunnel to simulate a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) bridge dynamic system, free to vibrate in both vertical and torsional directions. The mass, vertical frequency, and the torsional-to-vertical frequency ratio of the 2DOF systems were fixed to emphasize the effects of gap-width. A free-vibration test methodology was employed and the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) was utilized to extract the eight flutter derivatives and the modal parameters from the coupled free-decay responses. The results of the zero gap-width configuration were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical values for an ideal thin flat plate in smooth flow and the published results of models with similar cross-sections, thus validating the experimental and analytical techniques utilized in this study. The methodology was further verified by the comparison between the measured and predicted free-decay responses. A comparison of results for different gap-widths revealed that variations of the gap-width mainly affect the torsional damping property, and that the configurations with greater gap-widths show a higher torsional damping ratio and hence stronger aerodynamic stability of the bridge.

In this study a modified ground strain model is developed for an equivalent earthquake load and is applied to the seismic analysis of buried pipelines, The ground strain can be obtained using the ratio of a maximum ground velocity to a wave propagation velocity. To reflect soil conditions and seismic characteristics the wave propagation velocity is evaluated by a proposed dispersion curve based on wave energy distribution. In order to verify the procedures the observed earthquake data and the results of this study are compared. For the application of an equivalent earthquake load to the seismic analysis the buried pipelines are modeled using the beam theory. the results of the analyses are compared with those of a dynamic analysis code and those obtained from the response displacement method. Finally various parametric studies considering different soil conditions and seismic loads are examined.
A one-dimensional kinematic wave model was used to calculate temporal and spatial changes of the highway runoff. Infiltration into pavement was considered using Darcy's law, as a function of flow depth and pavement hydraulic conductivity ($K_p$). The model equation was calculated using the method of characteristics (MOC), which provided stable solutions for the model equation. 22 storm events monitored in a highway runoff monitoring site in west Los Angeles in the U.S. were used for the model calculation and evaluation. Using three different values of $K_p$ ($5{\times}10^{-6}$, $10^{-5}$, and $2{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$), total runoff volume and peak flow rate were calculated and then compared with the measured data for each storm event. According to the calculation results, $10^{-5}cm/sec$ was considered a site representative value of $K_p$. The study suggested a one-dimensional method to predict hydrodynamic behavior of highway runoff, which is required for the water quality prediction.

This paper presents spectral element formulation which approximates Lamb wave propagation by PZT transducers bonded on a thin plate. A two layer beam model under 2-D plane strain condition is introduced to simulate high-frequency dynamic responses induced by a piezoelectric (PZT) layer rigidly bonded on a base plate. Mindlin-Herrmann and Timoshenko beam theories are employed to represent the first symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb wave modes on a base plate, respectively. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and 1-D linear piezoelectricity are used to model the electro-mechanical behavior of a PZT layer. The equations of motions of a two layer beam model are derived through Hamilton's principle. The necessary boundary conditions associated with the electro-mechanical properties of a PZT layer are formulated in the context of dual functions of a PZT layer as an actuator and a sensor. General spectral shape functions of response field and the associated boundary conditions are obtained through equations of motions converted into frequency domain. Detailed spectrum element formulation for composing the dynamic stiffness matrix of a two layer beam model is presented as well. The validity of the proposed spectral element is demonstrated through numerical examples.

This work is an attempt to design a dynamic model for a non local bio-thermoelastic medium with diffusion. The system of governing equations are formulated in terms of displacement vector field, chemical potential and the tissue temperature in the context of non local dual phase lag (NL DPL) theories of heat conduction and mass diffusion. Based on this considered model, we study the fundamental solution and propagation of plane harmonic waves in tissues. In order to analyze the behavior of the NL DPL model, we construct basic theorem in the terms of elementary function which determine the existence of three longitudinal and one transverse wave. The effects of various parameters on the characteristics of waves i.e., phase velocity and attenuation coefficients are elaborated by plotting various figures of physical quantities in the later part of the paper.
