  • Squeeze film dampers (SFDs) have been commonly used to effectively enhance the dynamic behavior of the rotating shaft supported by rolling element bearings. However, due to the recent trends of high operating speed, high load capacity and light weight in rotating machinery, it is becoming increasingly important to change the dynamic characteristics of rotating machines in operation so that the excessive vibrations, which may occurparticularly when passing through critical speeds or unstable regions, can be avoided. Semi-active type SFDs using magneto-rheological fluid (MR fluid), which responds to an applied magnetic field with a change in rheological behavior, are introduced in order to find its applications to rotating machinery as an effective device attenuating unbalance responses. In this paper, a semi-active SFD using MR fluid is designed, tested, and identified to investigate the capability of changing its dynamic properties such as damping and stiffness. In order to apply the MR-SFD to the vibration attenuation of a rotor, a systematic approach for determining the damper's optimal location is investigated, and also, a control algorithm that could improve the unbalance response characteristics of a flexible rotor is proposed and its control performance is validated with a numerical example.

  • The spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tool system, while the rotor has unbalance mass inevitably. Therefore, it is important to recognize the effect of unbalance mass. This paper presents analysis of dynamic behavior of a high speed spindle with a built-in motor. The spindle is supported by the angular contact ball bearings and the rotor is fixed at the middle of spindle. The spindle used in CNC automatic lathe has been investigated using combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The Houbolt method is used for the integration of the system equations and the dynamic behavior of spindle is obtained considering unbalance mass of rotor. Results show that increasing rotational speed of spindle magnifies the whirl responses of spindle seriously. Also the whirl responses of spindle are affected by the other factors such as unbalance mass and bearing stiffness.

  • Feeding traction loads from the public power system may lead to some current and voltage unbalance and consequently affects the operation of its energy-supply system and other equipment connected with it. This paper introduces an analysis of the current unbalance caused by the demands of an electric railway on a public power system. And the results with compensator and without compensator are simulated, and eventually the formula about the current unbalance is suggested. The Scott-connected transformer is adopted in Korea National Railway System. So Scott-connected transformer among the various transformer connection schemes is analyzed in this paper. Also, the formulas about the unbalance and compensating current can be derived by using two parameters(M-phase and T-phase current) of secondary Scott-connected transformer. So, the practical and accurate simulation can be done through dynamic models by using scheduling of traction.

  • The dynamic performance of air foil bearings relies on a coupling between a thin air film and an elastic foil structure. A number of successful analytical techniques to predict dynamic performance have been developed. However, the evaluation of its dynamic characteristic is still not enough because of the mechanical complexity of the foil structure and strong nonlinear behavior of friction force. This work presents a nonlinear transient analysis method to predict dynamic performance of foil bearings. In this method, time dependent Reynolds equation is used to calculate pressure distribution and a finite element method is used to model the bump foil structure. The analysis is treated with a direct implicit integration technique that can handle nonlinear problems and the stick-slip algorithm is used to consider friction force. Using this method the response to the mass unbalance excitation is investigated for various design parameters and operating conditions. The results of analysis show that foil bearing is very effective on the restriction of vibration at the resonance frequency compared to the rigid surface bearings and the effectiveness depends on the operating conditions, static load and a amount of mass unbalance. In addition, there exist optimum values of friction coefficient, bump foil stiffness and number of circumferential slit with regards to minimizing dynamic response at the resonance frequency. These optimum values are system dependent.

  • A rotor-bearing system has been investigated, including internal damping and axial torque using finite dynamic elements. A procedure is presented for dynamic modeling of rotor-bearing system which consist of finite dynamic shaft elements, rigid disk, and bearing and seal. A finite dynamic element model including the effects of rotatory inertia, gyroscopic moments, axial force, and axial torque is developed using the frequency dependent shape function. The natural whirl speeds, stability, and unbalance response of rotor system are calculated on several cases and compared with the conventional finite elements.

  • In recent years, an increasing amount of computer network research has focused on the problem of cluster system in order to achieve higher performance and lower cost. The load unbalance is the major defect that reduces performance of a cluster system that uses parallel program in a form of SPMD (Single Program Multiple Data). Also, the load unbalance is a problem of MPP (Massive Parallel Processors), and distributed system. The cluster system is a loosely-coupled distributed system, therefore, it has higher communication overhead than MPP. Dynamic load balancing can solve the load unbalance problem of cluster system and reduce its communication cost. The cluster systems considered in this paper consist of P heterogeneous nodes connected by a switch-based network. The master node can predict the average execution time of tasks for each slave node based on the information from the corresponding slave node. Then, the master node redistributes remaining tasks to each node considering the predicted execution time and the communication overhead for task migration. The proposed dynamic load balancing uses execution time prediction to optimize the task redistribution. The various performance factors such as node number, task number, and communication cost are considered to improve the performance of cluster system. From the simulation results, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed dynamic load balancing algorithm.

  • STSAT RWA (Reaction Wheel Assembly) micro-vibration is measured using KISTLER dynamic plate that can provide the time signals of three orthogonal forces and torques simultaneously up to 400Hz. In the post-processing, measured data are evaluated with respect to the wheel spin rate in both time and frequency domains, and the static/dynamic unbalances are evaluated from the extracted first harmonic component. Also the friction torque profile at each wheel speed is estimated from the measured data. Several higher order harmonic components are observed, that comes from its rotor shape as well as the wheel bearing characteristics. One of the most peculiar characteristics of this wheel is that the dynamic properties of two radial unbalance components are much different from each other as the RWA mounting configuration on a spacecraft is different from conventional RWA mounting configuration. Rocking mode is not appeared below 400Hz for all operating speed because the wheel size is very small. The post-processed results will be used for jitter analysis of STSAT due to RWA micro-vibration.

  • The paper presents an analytical investigation of the unbalance vibrations of a pump rotor. The analysis applies to rotor-bearing-seal-impeller systems which consist of rigid disks, distributed parameter rotor elements and discreate bearings, seals, and impellers. The dynamic hydraulic force of bearing, seal and impeller elements are represented by four stiffness coefficients arid four damping coefficients. Numerical results are presented for unbalance response associated with various kinds bearing, and with effects of seal and impeller forces.
