  • This paper presents an optimal design method for fuzzy controllers of HVDC system using adaptive evolutionary algorithm(AEA). We have proposed an adaptive evolutionary algorithm which uses a genetic algorithm and an evolution strategy in an adaptive manner in order to take merits of two different evolutionary computations. AEA is used for tuning fuzzy membership functions, scaling constants and PD gains. The simulation results show that the disturbances are well damped by both controllers and the dynamic performances of fuzzy controllers have better responses than those of PD controllers when mechanical torque changes suddenly.

  • Control system by means of fuzzy theory has demonstrated its robustness in applying to the high-order and nonlinear dynamic system in that it can utilizes the human expert knowledges in system design. In this paper, first, the design methodology of HFC combined PID controller with fuzzy controller by membership function of weighting coefficient is proposed. Second, Second, an auto-tuning algorithms utilizing the simplified reasoning method and genetic algorithms is presented to improve the performance of hybrid fuzzy controller. Especially, in order to obtain the optimal scaling factors and PID parameters of HFC using GA based on advanced initial individual, three kinds of estimation modes such as basic, contraction, and expansion mode are effectively utilized. The proposed HFC is evaluated and discussed in ITAE, overshoot and rising time to show applicability and superiority with simulation results.

  • A main vibration source in HDD is arisen from high rotating disk/spindle, and vibration suppression of the disk-spindle system becomes a critical issue and a major concern for high performance of the drive. In this paper, we study the feasibility of suppressing unwanted vibration of disk-spindle system of the HDD by external shock and excitation utilizing piezoelectric shunt damping methodology. By considering dynamic characteristics of the disk-spindle system through modal analysis, a target vibration mode is determined and then the piezoelectric material is carefully integrated to the modified drive. In order to maximize improvement of vibration characteristics of the proposed system, shunt circuit is optimally designed via tuning processes. Finally, the vibration characteristics of the high rotating disk-spindle system of the proposed drive is experimentally evaluated in frequency domain.

  • Widely tunable diodes integrated with periodically sampled and chirped DBR(distributed Bragg reflector) and an EA(electroabsorption) modulator are analyzed dynamically using the improved largesinal time-domain model. The tuning characteristics of sampled- and chirped-grating DBR laser diodes are demonstrated theoretically. The results of the simulation agree well with those of the experiment. And the intensity-modulation properties of the laser diodes integrated with an EA modulator are calculated. It is shown that the external modulation has the lower frequency chirp by 1/20 for the same extinction ratio than the direct modulation, and also the short pulse train can be generated using the optical gating of an EA modulator.

  • The importance of dynamic stability of power system is increasing as the excitation system using static type are greatly enlarged. There are several types of PSS at Present, Elements of PSS consist of Notch filter, lead-lag filter, washout limiter which are variable. The existing power system has a difficulty in determining the optimal PSS parameters whenever PSS is installed. And it is recommended to retune PSS parameters periodically because system characteristics change due to aging. In this paper, intelligent PSS using fuzzy concept is introduced to get over difficulties mentioned above. The usefulness of fuzzy-type PSS was verified by applying FPSS to KEPCO power system. Generally, the voltage regulation deteriorates if conventional PSS is applied because supplementary signal is added into AVR summing point to damp Power oscillation. In this paper this problem is solved by AVR limiter and fuzzy members tuning.

  • The wavelength converter is considered to be a key element of future dense WDM optical networks. It enables wavelength reuse and resolves contention problem. Moreover, the tunability of the wavelength converter enhance the flexibility of network systems by facilitating reconfigurable dynamic wavelength routing. In order to achieve optically tunable wavelength conversion, we recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated wavelength conversion and tuning based on cascaded sum and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN channel waveguide. • Tuning of the speed controller in the linear servo applications needs the accurate information of a mover mass including a load mass. Therefore this paper proposes the mass estimation method of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM) applied at the vertical axis by using the recursive Least-Squares estimation algorithm. First, this paper derives the deterministic autoregressive moving average(DARMA) model of the mechanical dynamic system used at the vertical axis. Results obtained by the Matlab/Simulink simulation show that the mass of a PMLSM applied at the vertical axis can be accurately estimated both at no-load and at load.

  • In deeply scaled CMOS technologies, two major non-ideal factors are threatening the survival of the CMOS; i) PVT (process, voltage, and temperature) variations and ii) leakage power consumption. In this paper, we propose a novel post-silicon tuning methodology to scale optimum voltage and frequency "dynamically". The proposed design technique will use our PVT sensor circuits to monitor the variations and based on the monitored variation data, voltage and frequency will be compensated "automatically". During the compensation process, supply voltage is dynamically adjusted to guarantee the minimum total power consumption without violating the frequency requirement. The simulation results show that the proposed technique can reduce the total power by 85% and the static power by 53% on average for the selected ISCAS'85 benchmark circuits with 45 nm CMOS technology compared to the results of the traditional PVT compensation method.

  • Monolithic SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) variable gain amplifiers (VGAs) with a feedforward configuration have been newly developed for 5 GHz applications. Two types of the feedforward VGAs have been made: one using a coupled-emitter resistor and the other using an HBT-based current source. At 5.2 GHz, both of the VGAs achieve a dynamic gain-control range of 23 dB with a control-voltage range from 0.4 to 2.6 V. The gain-tuning sensitivity is 90 mV/dB. At $V_{CTRL}$= 2.4 V, the 1 dB compression output power, $P_{1-dB}$, and dc bias current are 0 dBm and 59 mA in a VGA with an emitter resistor and -1.8 dBm and 71mA in a VGA with a constant current source, respectively.
