Currently in the country, the necessity of seismic analyses is increasing due to the increase of demand and interest in seismic design. Especially, shear wall apartments are constructed mostly for a residental building so seismic analyses for the apartment are actively executed. For the seismic analysis of the shear wall apartment, it may be not efficient in time and effort to model the entire structure by a finite element mesh. Therefore, an equivalent model is needed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the structure by decreasing the number of degrees of freedom. In this study, a method to form an equivalent model that is simple and easy to use was proposed utilizing effective mass coefficient that is highly correlated to mode shape of the structure. This equivalent model was obtained by replacing a shear wall structure with an equivalent frame structure having beams and columns. This model can be used very effectively when excessive seismic analyses are necessary in a short period because it can be operated in any commercial program and reduce the analysis time. Also, it can model floor slabs so it can represent the actual behavior of shear wall apartments. Furthermore, it is very excellent since it can represent the asymmetry of the structure.

Since the dynamic behaviors of liquid storage tanks on flexible soil are significantly influenced by the fluid-structure-soil interaction (FSSI), its effects must be rigorously considered for accurate earthquake analysis and seismic design of the storage system. In this study, dynamic analysis is performed for a rectangular liquid storage tank on flexible soil, and its dynamic characteristics are examined by rigorously considering the effects of FSSI. The hydrodynamic force and the interaction force between the structure and soil are evaluated using the finite-element approach. In the evaluations, mid-point integrated finite elements and viscous dampers are considered for energy radiation into the infinite soil. The effective earthquake force is then obtained from free-field analysis. It is thus demonstrated that the earthquake responses of the rectangular liquid storage tank on flexible soil are significantly influenced by the FSSI.

This paper evaluated the optimum Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) using a circular concrete bridge pier subjected to dynamic loading. A three-dimensional finite element model was simulated using finite element program, ABAQUS. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) option and plastic properties of the materials were incorporated to model the non-linearity of the structure. The analyses parameters were changed in length-to-height ratio and width-to-span ratio where columns were subjected to dynamic loading. Numerical analysis was conducted, and the seismic performance of the structures were evaluated by analyzing the ductility behavior of the structure. Results showed that the use of CFRP enhances the structural performance of column and revealed that the increase in length-to-height ratio plays vital role of improving the performance of the structure than the change in width-to-span ratio.
In this paper, dynamic elastic module of banded gneiss were calculated on the basis of SPS velocity logging data obtained from a geotechnical test-hole in Pungsan-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. This study mainly focuses on the velocity analysis, Q factor calculation relative to attenuation factor, and generation of crack information and its relation with seismic velocity. As a result, P-wave and S-wave velocity of fresh hard rock was 5,559m/s and 3,063m/s, respectively, with Poisson's ratio being 0.28. With these results, dynamic modules were prepared, and crack information analyzed by acoustic televiewer was incorporated to identify the correlation among and between delay of first arrival by crack amplitude ratio, and velocity. The results of this study revealed that the analyzed logging hole mainly consisted of micro crack and a number of cracks and the size of crack aperture, functioned as a variable to seismic velocity in the micro crack area of this type of hard rock.
In this paper, feasibility study was carried out to evaluate necessity of seismic design of earth retaining structures in a deep excavation. Dynamic behavior of retaining system was analyzed using FLAC, a finite difference analysis program. It was shown that maximum bending moments of retaining walls and axial forces of supports were increased up to 98% and 87% during earthquake, respectively, compared to final excavation step, which indicates that dynamic earth pressure has a large effect on a retaining system. The stability of retaining system designed according to current design specifications was evaluated using structural forces obtained by numerical analysis, and effect of earthquake loading on structural design was analyzed.

The Standard ASCE 61-14 proposes the Substitute Structure Method (SSM) as a Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP) to estimate nonlinear displacement demands at the center of mass of piers or wharves under seismic actions. To account for bidirectional earthquake excitation according to the Standard, results from independent pushover analyses in each orthogonal direction should be combined using either a 100/30 directional approach or a procedure referred to as the Dynamic Magnification Factor, DMF. The main purpose of this paper is to present an evaluation of these NSPs in relation to four wharf model structures on soil conditions ranging from soft to medium dense clay. Results from nonlinear static analyses were compared against benchmark values of relevant Engineering Design Parameters, EDPs. The latter are defined as the geometric mean demands that are obtained from nonlinear dynamic analyses using a set of 30 two-component ground motion records. It was found that SSM provides close estimates of the benchmark displacement demands at the center of mass of the wharf structures. Furthermore, for the most critical pile connection at a landside corner of the wharf the 100/30 and DMF approaches produced displacement, curvature, and force demands that were reasonably comparable to corresponding benchmark values.

Fragility curves are being more significant as a useful tool for evaluating the relationship between the earthquake intensity measure and the effects of the engineering demand parameter on the buildings. In this paper, the effect of different site conditions on the vulnerability of the structures was examined through the fragility curves taking into account different strength capacities of the precast columns. Thus, typical existing single-story precast RC industrial buildings which were built in Turkey after the year 2000 were examined. The fragility curves for the three typical existing industrial structures were derived from an analytical approach by performing non-linear dynamic analyses considering three different soil conditions. The Park and Ang damage index was used in order to determine the damage level of the members. The spectral acceleration (Sa) was used as the ground motion parameter in the fragility curves. The results indicate that the fragility curves were derived for the structures vary depending on the site conditions. The damage probability of exceedance values increased from stiff site to soft site for any Sa value. This difference increases in long period in examined buildings. In addition, earthquake demand values were calculated by considering the buildings and site conditions, and the effect of the site class on the building damage was evaluated by considering the Mean Damage Ratio parameter (MDR). Achieving fragility curves and MDR curves as a function of spectral acceleration enables a quick and practical risk assessment in existing buildings.

In this study, we propose an optimal design method by applying the Prefabricated Buckling Restrained Brace (PF-BRB) to structures with asymmetrically rigidity plan. As a result of the PF-BRB optimal design of a structure with an asymmetrically rigidity plan, it can be seen that the reduction effect of dynamic response is greater in the case of arrangement considering the asymmetric distribution of stiffness (Asym) than in the case of arrangement in the form of a symmetric distribution (Sym), especially It was confirmed that at an eccentricity rate of 20%, the total amount of reinforced PF-BRBs was also small. As a result of analyzing the dynamic response characteristics according to the change in eccentricity of the asymmetrically rigidity plan, the distribution of the reinforced PF-BRB showed that the larger the eccentricity, the greater the amount of damper distribution around the eccentric position. Additionally, when comparing the analysis models with an eccentricity rate of 20% and an eccentricity rate of 12%, the response reduction ratio of the 20% eccentricity rate was found to be large.

In general, the response spectrum analysis method (R.S.A) is widely used for seismic analysis of building structure. But, it is not common to apply R.S.A for the analysis of structural vibration caused by dynamic loads of equipments, machines and moving leads, etc. The time history analysis method(T.H.A) for the vibration analysis, compared with R.S.A, is very complex, difficult and time consuming. So the application of R.S.A, that is convenient to calculate maximum responses for structural vibration, is proposed in this study. At first, the procedure for the application of the R.S.A to calculate of the maximum vibration response induced by dynamic load applied on the single point is described. And then, the process, which can save the time and the memory for calculation of the maximum vibration response induced by dynamic loads on the multi-point is proposed, and the maximum structural response caused by moving loads are obtained. Lastly, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results of R.S.A to T.H.A for some example models.

This study investigates the seismic performance of the surge tank which is of the atmospheric type and constructed above the ground. For that purpose, three different numerical models of the surge tank have been taken into account. Two models are constructed to describe the surge tank with different support conditions: one is to model all supports as fixed, and the other is to use spring element for the rock conditions. The third model is constructed to describe not only the surge tank with spring element of the rocks but also the vertical waterway tunnel. Through the time-history analysis of the surge tank subjected to three artificially excited ground motions, it is demonstrated that there can be much difference between the three models of our interest according to the support conditions and inclusion of the vertical waterway tunnel. However, their seismic performances still remain below the safety criteria, i.e., dynamic allowable stress. Also, the numerical results let us know where the critical sections occur. These results could be used to develop the efficient seismic enhancement method for the surge tank.
