  • This paper suggests the effective channel assignment scheme for mobility prediction handover. For maintaining required quality of service (QoS) during handover, there are handover algorithms these reserve the channel where the movement is predicted. But channel assignment schemes these have been studied are not considered mobility prediction handover. This paper suggests the channel assignment scheme that considers mobility predicted handover. The suggested algorithm maintains dropping probability of handover calls, decreases blocking probability of new calls and increases channel utilization.

  • In this letter, we propose a new online buffer management algorithm to simultaneously provide diverse multimedia traffic services and enhance network performance. Our online approach exhibits dynamic adaptability and responsiveness to the current traffic conditions in multimedia networks. This approach can provide high buffer utilization and thereby improve packet loss performance at the time of congestion.

  • A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a group of independent mobile computing nodes that consist of a multi-hop wireless network without a central administration or any infrastructure. Every node that wants to join a MANET must obtain an address for communication. Having a centralized DHCP server that provides addresses to nodes, we can easily and automatically obtain addresses. However, a MANET lacks any fixed infrastructure such as a DHCP server. We therefore propose a distributed address autoconfiguration approach for a MANET using a reserved address and optimistic Duplicated Address Detection (DAD). The reserved address helps to reduce the allocation latency, and the optimistic DAD guarantees the uniqueness of addresses and lessens communication overhead. We then suggest methods of handling network partition and network merging situations, and go on to evaluate our approach through simulations. The simulation result shows that our scheme guarantees the uniqueness of allocated address and considerably improves allocation latency and communication overheads.

  • In this paper we focus on dynamic reservation slot allocation scheme for supporting QoS of a voice traffic in WATM MAC. Especially, voice traffic is the most important real-time object, and so we propose a new MAC protocol for voice traffic over WATM networks in the multimedia environment. According to the characteristics of voice traffic which is repeatedly in silent state and active state, new protocol allocates reservation slots dynamically with respect to the number of silent voice source of which starting time is stored to the state table in base station (BS). The simulation results show that the proposed protocol has better performance than slotted ALOHA in average access delay, collision rate, better than NC-PRMA(Non Collision Packet Reservation Multiple Access) in band width efficiency, and can provide a certain level of QoS requirement by the given slot assignment even though the number of voice terminals is increased.

  • In this paper, we present the plan execution model for dynamic mobile computing environments, and then introduce the smart script system developed on these base models. The smart script system includes the smart script language, in which the task knowledge of a mobile personal assistant is represented, and the script execution engine, by which the scripts are dynamically executed in response to the given task goal and the environmental changes. In order to evaluate the utility and the performance of our system, we implement an application service called Smart Reservation and conduct some experiments.

  • A wireless bridge is essential to transmit control and managing information to sensors or instruments from a central integrated ship area network station. In this paper, a WiMedia Distributed-MAC(D-MAC) protocol is adopted for development of a seamless N-Screen wireless service in Indoor and Ship Area Networks. Furthermore, to provide the OSMU(One Source Multi Use) N-screen service through P2P streaming in the seamless D-MAC protocol, a Dynamic Threshold-based Multicast(DTM) technology is proposed and analyzed. For this technology, a new Hard/Soft Vertical Region(HVR-SVR) based time slot allocation and a multicast resource reservation scheme are combined. From simulation results, proposed DTM scheme expands the number of time slots available for unicast and multicast realtime N-Screen reservations with various service time interval requests. Furthermore, it enhances performances in vewpoints of realtime N-Screen data reservation conflict and throughput.

  • It has been known that the host mobility feature has very significant impact on the QoS (Quality of Service), which is usually required to a real-time multimedia application. The existing QoS support mechanisms to provide the real-time services to fixed network environment, like as RSVP, are inadequate to accommodate the mobile hosts which can frequently change their point of attachments to the fixed network. So, MRSVP (Mobile RSVP) protocol has been proposed to reduce the impacts of host mobility on QoS guarantees, in which a mobile host needs to make advance resource reservations at multiple locations it may possibly visit during the lifetime of the connection. This paper proposes a dynamic dual anchor node (DDAN) architecture which integrates the MRSVP and RSVP tunnel, in addition to the Mobile IP Regional Registration protocol. By limiting the resource reserved in local area, it preserves the lower level of resource reservation, but provides approximately the same degree of QoS support as the existing MRSVP.

  • In this paper, we propose a new price-based call admission control algorithm for multi-class communication networks. When a call arrives at the network, it informs the network of the number of requested circuits and the minimum amount of time that it will require. The network provides the optimal price for the arrived call with which it tries to maximize its expected revenue. The optimal price is dynamically adjusted based on the information of the arrived call, and the present and the estimated future congestion level of the network during the reservation time of the call. If the call accepts the price, it is admitted. Otherwise, it is rejected. We compare the performance of our dynamic pricing algorithm with that of the static pricing algorithm by Courcoubetis and Reiman [1], and Paschalidis and Tsitsiklis [2]. By the comparison, we show that our dynamic pricing algorithm has better performance aspects such as higher call admission ratio and lower price than the static pricing algorithm, although these two algorithms result in almost the same revenue as shown in [2]. This implies that, in the competitive situation, the dynamic pricing algorithm can attract more users than the static pricing algorithm, generating more revenue. Moreover, we show that if a certain fixed connection fee is introduced to the price for a call, our dynamic pricing algorithm yields more revenue.

  • As the number of multimedia applications increases, various protocols and architectures have been proposed to provide QoS(Quality of Service) guarantees in the Internet. Most of these techniques, though, bear inherent contradiction between the scalability and the capability of providing QoS guarantees. In this paper, we propose a protocol, named DQSP(Dynamic QoS Support Protocol), which provides the dynamic resource allocation and admission control for QoS guarantees in a scalable way. In DQSP, the core routers only maintain the per source-edge router resource allocation state information. Each of the source-edge routers maintains the usage information for the resources allocated to itself on each of the network links. Based on this information, the source edge routers perform admission control for the incoming flows. For the resource reservation and admission control, DQSP does not incur per flow signaling at the core network, and the amount of state information at the core routers depends on the scale of the topology instead of the number of user flows. Simulation results show that DQSP achieves efficient resource utilization without incurring the number of user flow related scalability problems as with IntServ, which is one of the representative architectures providing end-to-end QoS guarantees.
