밀결합 전송선 상에서 전력 저감을 위한 코드워드 생성 기법 (A Codeword Generation Technique to Reduce Dynamic Power Consumption in Tightly Coupled Transmission Lines)

  • 반도체 공정의 발달로 인해 칩의 집적도가 높아졌으며, 연결선 사이의 간격 또한 좁아지게 되었다. 그로 인해 연결선 내에 존재하는 커패시턴스와 인덕턴스가 증가하게 되었고, 특히 전역 연결선들에서는 자신의 그라운드 커패시턴스보다 인접한 다른 연결선과의 결합 커패시턴스가 더욱 커지는 경향을 보이게 되었다. 이러한 현상으로 인해 발생하는 유도성 결합과 용량성 결합은 인접한 연결선의 신호 간섭으로 심각한 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 추가적인 연결선을 이용하여 신호 무결성을 저해시키는 누화잡음을 제거하면서, 입력 데이터의 확률을 고려하여 동적 전력 소모를 최소화하는 코드워드 생성 기법을 제안하였다. 제안한 기법의 성능평가를 위해 FastCap 및 FastHenry 프로그램과 HSPICE를 이용하여 실험한 결과, 소모 전력에서 기존 기법보다 평균 15% 정도의 감소를 보임을 확인하였다.

  • These days, mobile embedded systems adopt flash memory capable of XIP feature since they can reduce memory usage, power consumption, and software load time. XIP provides direct access to ROM and flash memory for processors. However, using XIP incurs unnecessary degradation of applications' performance because direct access to ROM and flash memory shows more delay than that to main memory. In this paper, we propose a memory management framework, dynamic XIP, which can resolve the performance degradation of using XIP. Using a constrained RAM cache, dynamic XIP can dynamically change XIP region according to page access pattern to reduce performance degradation in execution time or energy consumption resulting from native XIP problem. The proposed framework consists of a page profiler gathering applications' memory access pattern using PMU and an XIP manager deciding that a page is accessed whether in main memory or in flash memory. The proposed framework is implemented and evaluated in Linux kernel. Our evaluation shows that our framework can reduce execution time at most 25% and energy consumption at most 22% compared with using XIP-only case adopted in general mobile embedded systems. Moreover, the evaluation shows that in execution time and energy consumption, our modified LRU algorithm with code page filters can reduce more than at most 90% and 80% respectively compared with applying just existing LRU algorithm to dynamic XIP.

Data Supply Voltage Reduction Scheme for Low-Power AMOLED Displays

  • This paper demonstrates a new driving scheme that allows reducing the supply voltage of data drivers for low-power active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays. The proposed technique drives down the data voltage range by 50%, which subsequently diminishes in the peak power consumption of data drivers at the full white pattern by 75%. Because the gate voltage of a driving thin film transistor covers the same range as a conventional driving scheme by means of a level-shifting scheme, the low-data supply scheme achieves the equivalent dynamic range of OLED currents. The average power consumption of data drivers is reduced by 60% over 24 test images, and power consumption is kept below 25%.

  • Currently mobile services are on the verge of full commercialization ahead of 5G mobile communication (5G). The first goal could be to preempt the 5G market through realistic media services utilizing VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) technologies that users can most easily experience. Basically this movement is based on the advanced development of smart devices and high quality graphics processing computing power of mobile application processors. Accordingly, the importance of mobile GPUs is emerging and the most concern issue becomes a model for predicting the power and performance for smooth operation of high quality mobile contents. In many cases, the performance of mobile GPUs has been introduced in terms of power consumption of mobile GPUs using dynamic voltage and frequency scaling and throttling functions for power consumption and heat management. This paper introduces several studies of mobile GPU performance prediction model with user-friendly methods not like conventional power centric performance prediction models.

공기, 지열 및 복합 열원 열펌프의 중간기 에너지 소비량에 관한 연구 (Study on Energy Consumption of Air-source, Ground-source and Dual-source Heat Pump during Intermediate Season)

  • This study is to compare energy consumption of air-source, ground-source and dual-source heat pump systems during intermediate season using dynamic simulation. Ground-source heat pump has higher COP than that of air-source but requires additional power consumption of auxiliary equipment such as circulation pump. During intermediate season when the outdoor air temperature is favorable, total COP of air-source heat pump may be greater than that of ground-source when circulation pump power consumption is included. Dual-source heat pump which selects the more favorable heat source is compared with air-source only and ground-source only heat pumps for total power consumption. Results show that power consumption of dual-source heat pump is lower than that of ground-source only by 0.73%.

  • A dynamic model of the Korean total artificial heart(TAH) which contains a brushless DC motor, all of mechanical components, the pump system with integrated variable volume space(WS) and the circulatory system model including the bronchial circulation were established Two different sets of seven differential equations were separately derived for the left and right systolic period of the Korean TAH operation. Throughout the computer simulation, a full-state fEedback optimal controller that minimizes the power consumption of the Korean TAH and drives the end stage velocity of the energy converter to zero was developed based upon the optimal control theory. Robustness of the controller were also analyzed with the dynamic model of the Korean TAH.

Adopting the Banked Register File Scheme for Better Performance and Less Leakage

  • Excessively high temperature deteriorates the reliability and increases the leakage power consumption of microprocessors. The register file, known as one of the hottest functional units in microprocessors, incurs frequent dynamic thermal management operations for thermal control. In this letter, we adopt the banked register file scheme, which was originally proposed to reduce dynamic power consumption. By simply modifying the register file structure, the temperature in the register file was reduced dramatically, resulting in 13.37% performance improvement and 10.49% total processor leakage reduction.

  • 멀티프로세서가 임베디드 시스템에서 널리 쓰임에 따라 지원되는 전력 최소화 기법을 이용하여 태스크를 수행하기 위해 필요한 에너지의 소모량을 줄여야 할 필요성이 대두된다. 본 논문은 동적 전압 스케일링 및 전력 셧다운을 이용하여 에너지 소모를 최소화 하는 태스크 스케줄링 알고리즘을 멀티프로세서 환경을 위해 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘에서는 전력 셧다운시의 에너지 및 타이밍 오버헤드를 고려하여 반복적으로 태스크 할당 및 태스크 순서화를 수행한다. 제안된 반복적인 태스크 스케줄링을 통해 전체 에너지 소모를 줄이는 가장 좋은 해를 얻을 수 있었다. 전체 에너지 소모는 리니어 프로그래밍 모델 및 전력 셧다운의 임계 시간을 고려하여 계산되었다. 실제 어플리케이션으로부터 추출된 표준 태스크 그래프에 기반을 둔 실험 결과를 통해 하드웨어 자원 및 시간제한에 따른 에너지 소모 관계를 분석하였다. 실험 결과를 볼 때 제안된 알고리즘은 기존의 우선권 기반의 태스크 스케줄링에 대해서 의미 있는 성능 향상을 얻을 수 있었다.

모바일 단말에서의 전원관리 기술 (Power Management for Mobile Terminal)

  • As the performance of the mobile terminal becomes higher, the power consumption gradually increases. As a result, power management is one of the most important issues in mobile system with battery. In this paper, we describe an DPM(Dynamic Power Management) using DVS(Dynamic Power Management) as a power management mechanism in Qplus operating system. DVS generally considers a specific device such as CPU, whereas we consider the relations with other hardware components as well as each component. We specially focus on the relation between CPU, memory and LCD devices. We also designs a kernel monitor to collect information to decide the policy for power management. According to the experimental results, the proposed method enables to save much power.

  • The variable speed engine generator set is interested for an isolated power system due to reduced fuel consumption and less emission. However, because of sluggish dynamic behavior of the internal combustion engine the power quality would be degraded during the sudden load power surge, where the power required by the load is not available by the engine due to the reduced engine speed. An isolated power system based on variable speed engine with a super-capacitor bank improves dynamic characteristics under sudden load change, and power quality, fuel consumption, and pollutants can be reduced remarkably. Also, it is verified by the computer simulation that the inverter of 3phase-4leg is compatible to the isolated power system with unbalanced load. In this paper, the feasibility of the system has been verified based on a 26kw commercial diesel engine system.
