This review paper presents an introduction of contact mechanics and rubber friction theory for sliding friction of elastomer composites in contact with rough surfaces. Particularly, Klüppel & Heinrich theory considers the self-affine (or fractal) characteristic for rough surfaces to predict adhesion and hysteresis frictions of elastomers based on the contact mechanics of Greenwood & Williamson. Due to dynamic excitation process of elastomer composites while sliding in contact with multiscale surface roughness (or asperity), viscoelastic properties in a wide frequency range becomes major contributor to friction behaviors. A brief description and examples are provided to construct a viscoelastic master curve considering nonlinear viscoelasticity of elastomer composites. Finally, application of rubber friction theory to tire tread compounds in traction with road surfaces is discussed with several experimental and theoretical results.

Topology optimization is applied for the lightweight design of three main parts of a vertical articulated robot: a base frame, a lower and a upper frame. Design domains for optimization are set as large solid regions that completely embrace the original parts, which are discretized by using three-dimensional solid elements. Design variables are parameterized one-to-one to the material properties of each element by using the SIMP method. The objective of optimization is set as the multi-objective form combining the natural frequencies and mean compliances of a structure for which load steps of interest are selected from the multibody dynamics analysis of a robot. The obtained results of topology optimization are post-processed to designs favorable to manufacturability for casting process. The final optimized results are 11.0% (base frame), 12.0% (lower frame) and 10.0% (upper frame) lighter with similar or even higher static and dynamic stiffnesses than the original models.

We studied the green synthesis and antibacterial activity of paper coated with chitosan-silver (Ag) green nanocomposites for packaging applications. Green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) was achieved by a chemical reaction involving a mixture of chitosan-silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) in an autoclave at 15 psi, $121^{\circ}C$, for 30 min. AgNPs and their formation in chitosan was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). As-prepared chitosan-AgNPs composite materials were coated on manila paper using Meyer rod. Surface morphology and Ag contents in coating layer were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation were significantly affected by coating with chitosan-AgNPs. The antibacterial test of coated paper was performed qualitatively and quantitatively against Escherichia coli (E. coli). It was shown to be effective in suppressing the growth of E. coli with increasing Ag contents on the surface of coated paper and more than 95 R (%) of antimicrobial rate was obtained at chitosan-AgNPs coated papers.

Objectives: Patient dose verification is clinically the most important parts in the treatment delivery of radiation therapy. The three dimensional(3D) reconstruction of dose distribution delivered to target volume helps to verify patient dose and determine the physical characteristics of beams used in intensity modulated radiation therapy(IMRT). We present Beam Intensity Scanner(BInS) system for the pre treatment dosimetric verification of two dimensional photon intensity. The BInS is a radiation detector with a custom made software for relative dose conversion of fluorescence signals from scintillator. Methods: This scintillator is fabricated by phosphor Gadolinium Oxysulphide and is used to produce fluorescence from the irradiation of 6MV photons on a Varian Clinac 21EX. The digitized fluoroscopic signals obtained by digital video camera will be processed by our custom made software to reproduce 3D relative dose distribution. For the intensity modulated beam(IMB), the BInS calculates absorbed dose in absolute beam fluence, which are used for the patient dose distribution. Results: Using BInS, we performed various measurements related to IMRT and found the followings: (1) The 3D dose profiles of the IMBs measured by the BInS demonstrate good agreement with radiographic film, pin type ionization chamber and Monte Carlo simulation. (2) The delivered beam intensity is altered by the mechanical and dosimetric properties of the collimating of dynamic and/or static MLC system. This is mostly due to leaf transmission, leaf penumbra, scattered photons from the round edges of leaves, and geometry of leaf. (3) The delivered dose depends on the operational detail of how to make multileaf opening. Conclusions: These phenomena result in a fluence distribution that can be substantially different from the initial and calculative intensity modulation and therefore, should be taken into account by the treatment planing for accurate dose calculations delivered to the target volume in IMRT.

This study will not only prove experimental dynamic properties which are classified to slump, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexure strength and toughness granite soil concrete with a fine aggregate of granite soil and blast-furnace cement and polypropylene fiber over 45 mm, but also establish a basic data in order to use environment-friendly pavement through prove useful pavement mixed with granite and polypropylene (PP) fiber which is a kind of material to prevent a dry shrinkage clack, a partial destruction and useful and light. The value of slump test was gradually increased by PP fiber volume 3 $kgf/m^3$, but compressive strength took a sudden turn for the worse from 5 $kgf/m^3$. The compressive strength indicated a range of 13.72~18.35 MPa. On the contrary to compressive strength, the tensile strength showed to decrease with rising PP fiber volume, and the tensile strength indicated a range of 1.43~1.64 MPa. The tensile strength was stronger about 2~15 % in case of mixing with PP fiber volume than normal concrete. The flexural strength indicated a range of 2.76~3.41 MPa. The flexural strength was stronger about 20 % in case of PP fiber volume 0 $kg/m^3$ than PP fiber volume 9 $kg/m^3$. The toughness indicated a range of 0~25.46 $N{\cdot}mm$ and increased proportionally with PP fiber volume. The toughness was stronger about 8.3 times in case of PP fiber volume 9 $kg/m^3$ than PP fiber volume 1 $kg/m^3$. The pavement with PP fiber volume over such a fixed quantity in the park roads and walkways can have a effect to prevent not only resistance against clack but also rip off failures.

The present study was primarily carried out to characterize the properties of the spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) neurons that project from the upper cervical spinal segments to the midbrain. It was also investigated whether these neurons received convergent afferent inputs from other sources in addition to cervical inputs. Extracellular single unit recordings were made from neurons antidromically activated by stimulation of midbrain. Recording sites were located in lamina $I{\sim}VIII\;of\;C1{\sim}C3$ segments of spinal cord. Receptive field (RF) and response properties to mechanical stimulation were studied in 71 SMT neurons. Response profiles were classified into six groups: complex (Comp, n=9), wide dynamic range (WDR, n=16), low threshold (LT, n=5), high threshold (HT, n=6), deep/tap (Deep, n=10), and non- responsive (NR, n=25). Distributions of stimulation and recording sites were not significantly different between SMT groups classified upon their locations and/or response profiles. Mean conduction velocity of SMT neurons was $16.7{\pm}1.28\;m/sec$. Conduction velocities of SMTs recorded in superficial dorsal horn (SDH, n=15) were significantly slower than those of SMTs recorded in deep dorsal horn (DDH, n=18), lateral reticulated area (LRA, n=21), and intermediate zone and ventral horn (IZ/VH, n=15). Somatic RFs for SMTs in LRA and IZ/VH were significantly larger than those in SDH and DDH. Five SMT units (4 Comps and 1 HT) had inhibitory somatic RFs. About half (25/46) of SMT units have their RFs over trigeminal dermatome. Excitabilities of 5/12 cells and 9/13 cells were modulated by stimulation of ipsilateral phrenic nerve and vagus nerve, respectively. These results suggest that upper cervical SMT neurons are heterogenous in their function by showing a wide range of variety in location within the spinal gray matter, in response profile, and in convergent afferent input.

Aluminium Foam Sandwich (AFS) panels are becoming always more attractive in transportation applications thanks to the excellent combination of mechanical properties, high strength and stiffness, with functional ones, thermo-acoustic isolation and vibration damping. These properties strongly depend on the density of the foam, the morphology of the pores, the type (open or closed cells) and the size of the gas bubbles enclosed in the solid material. In this paper, the vibrational performances of two classes of sandwich panels with an Alulight(R) foam core are studied. Experimental tests, in terms of frequency response function and modal analysis, are performed in order to investigate the effect of different percentage of porosity in the foam, as well as the effect of the random distribution of the gas bubbles. Experimental results are used as a reference for developing numerical models using finite element approach. Firstly, a sensitivity analysis is performed in order to obtain a limit-but-bounded dynamic response, modelling the foam core as a homogeneous one. The experimental-numerical correlation is evaluated in terms of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Afterwards, an update of the previous numerical model is presented, in which the core is not longer modelled as homogeneous. Mass and stiffness are randomly distributed in the core volume, exploring the space of the eigenvectors.
Even the same materials are assembled in flush door skin panel, warping is not simply prevented under the changes of environmental conditions since wood and wood-based material have large variations in their physical and mechanical properties. The parameters such as linear movement coefficient(LMC), modulus of elasticity (MOE), required to predict warping could be estimated by oven drying method and dynamic method instead of American Society for Testing Materials(ASTM) procedure. The relationship between warping and LMC was curvilinear, while it between warping and MOE was linear. LMC had a larger effect on warping than MOE. Material propensity of skin panel such as hardboard and plywood showed normal distributions. The variation of material properties, however, was much larger in plywood than in hardboard. Monte Carlo simulation also indicated that rejection ratio of flush door due to the occurrence of warping could be predicted with consideration of the relationship of warping and parameters of probability distribution of MOE, LMC, and moisture content.

To improve the sound insulation performance of laminated glass in high speed trains, it is beneficial to study the relationship between the characteristics of interlayer films and the acoustical performance. In addition to those of conventional PVB (polyvinyl butyral), the dynamic mechanical properties of PVB derivatives and PC (polycarbonate), which are candidates for interlayer films, were analyzed. We assumed that PVB-HEMU, which has a glass transition temperature ($T_g$) around room temperature and a large tan ${\delta}$ (loss tangent) value, can be made to damp efficiently. The damping capability was tested utilizing sound transmission loss measurement and simulation under the identical structure of laminated glass in high speed trains. We also built a database for analysis of relations between interlayer film characteristics and acoustical performance; this was followed by the determination of sound transmission loss using the intensity technique and FEA.

A novel silicon-containing arylacetylene resin (MSAR) modified by dipropargyl ether of bisphenol A (DPBPA) and dipropargyl ether of perfluorobisphenol A (DPPFBPA) was prepared separately. The curing behaviors of modified resins, DPBPA/MSAR and DPPFBPA/MSAR, were characterized with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The kinetic parameters of modified resins were obtained by the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed that the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the cured DPBPA/MSAR reached $486^{\circ}C$. According to the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the decomposition temperature ($T_{d5}$) of the cured resins and char yield ($Y_c$, $800^{\circ}C$) decreased as the dipropargyl ether loadings increased, especially in air. With the same weight loading, thermal stability of DPBPA/MSAR was better than that of DPPFBPA/MSAR. The carbon fiber (T300) reinforced composites exhibited excellent flexural properties at room temperature with a high property retention at $300^{\circ}C$.
