  • This paper presents the design improvements made for the crack which is in the mounting structure of the mechanical structure of rotary wing aircraft. The doubler added to the mounting structure of rotary wing aircraft was designed and manufactured based on the load at the development stage, and a crack was found in the surface of doubler at a certain point during the operation of the aircraft. To identify the cause of the crack, the initial deformation of the structure, which may occur as a result of fastening condition, was considered and the dynamic analysis of the natural frequency of the structure comparing to the blade passing frequency of the aircraft were additionally reviewed. As a result of this study, a shim was added to remove the physical gap of the fastening area, and a doubler with thickened reinforcement was installed. The increase of structural strength is shown by reviewing the results of dynamic analysis for the structural verification of the improved design, and the fatigue evaluation complied to the requirement of the aircraft lifetime.

  • Lineal and angular movements of many engine components make the lubricant absorb air and the aerated lubricant greatly influences the clearance performance of contacting behaviors of engine components such as big-end bearing, cam and tappet, etc. This study investigates the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and proceeding which is one of the most frictional energy consuming components in the engine. Our assumption for the analysis of aerated lubricant film is that the film formation is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant by absorbing the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. In our investigation, it is found that these two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Frictional forces are also influenced by the aerated bubble size and density, which eventually enlarge the shear resistance due the surface tension, Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio under the dynamic loading condition. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, proceeding locus is computed with Mobility method at each time step.

  • If the vibration is occurred in a large-sized bus roof, it makes people annoying and complaining the quality of a large-sized bus. So in design stage, it must be considered. To assess vibration at the roof which is equipped with air conditioner in design stage, finite element model is constructed. Computer simulation analysis and experimental method are performed. The dynamic characteristics of the large-sized bus are found by using eigenvalue method. It is related with dynamic behavior. The running conditions of a large-sized bus are velocity and road condition which followed experimental conditions. And the frequency response of a large-sized bus is well correlated with analysis result. Modal participation method is used for finding major modes at each peak. Using this method, we found that front and rear suspension system, engine mounting system and roof structure are the major reasons of the roof vibration. To reduce vibration level of roof in a large-sized bus, spring stiffness of front and rear suspension system, spring stiffness of engine mounting system and roof structure are properly combined. From this study, the vibration characteristics of the roof structure of a large-sized bus can be to a satisfactory level.

  • The influence of fuel spray characteristics on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns to Improve fuel economy and to reduce exhaust emissions. In general, the UBHC(Unburned Hydrocarbon) emission could be reduced by decreasing the droplet size of the fuel sprays. In PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engines, the mixture of air and fuel would not be uniform under a certain condition, because the breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve sheat. In this study, were investigated the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2holes-2sprays and 4holes-2sprays type injectors used in PFI gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration were measured by LDPA (Laser Diffraction Particle size Analyzer). The variation of droplet mean diameter and optical concentration were measured for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray.

  • To reduce interior noise of running vehicles, a floating floor construction has been widely used in recent railway industry. Among the key factors of the floating floor design, dynamic stiffness is of most important in acoustical point of view. Sometimes hard rubber type supports have often been selected due to the other design constraints such as heavy load condition, durability of rubber element and its cost etc., even though it seems like the softer support, the better isolation of noise and vibration. In this paper two representative floor supports have been considered to evaluate their effectiveness in interior noise contribution: one is a soft rubber and another is a relatively hard one. From the measured dynamic stiffness of the specimens, equivalent stiffness of actual floating floor has been derived to use in the analytical models. Calculated air-borne and structure-borne noise insulation properties of the floating floors have been compared with experiments in prototype car. In full car model interior noise levels of running vehicles have been predicted to quantify the effectiveness of the two different floating support materials and verified through the measured inside noise levels of actual train as well. By comparison with difference of running noise levels two materials for floor support can be investigated quantitatively so that it could be applied in floating floor design.

  • Recently, eco-friendly electric motorcycles have been considered to replace aging gasoline motorcycles to reduce the amount of suspended fine dust in air. However, existing rechargeable battery-powered electric motorcycles have been found unacceptable by users because of their many limitations, such as long charging time, short travel distance per charge, and low driving speed. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional electric motorcycles, this paper proposes an exchangeable battery-powered electric motorcycle and a new frame shape for housing the exchangeable battery. The proposed frame is similar to that of current electric motorcycles; however, the shape and position of the saddle support, battery, and controller mount section are redesigned. The safety of the presented frame is verified through static and dynamic analyses using ABAQUS. In particular, the dynamic analysis is conducted under the most extreme condition among the various operating situations, thus confirming the robustness of the proposed frame design.

  • New damping measurement equipment was designed using the dynamic strain gage and high speed analog to digital signal 12 bit converter and compared it with existing equipment. The damping properties of general material and high damping material were also studied by this machine. The SDC (specific damping capacity) was measured with various heat treatment condition, initial vibration amplitude and internal stress. The vibration amplitude of high damping material is decreased within nearly less than 0.4 second after applying the initial forced vibration. But that of general material is still vibrating at the same time. After furnace-cooling heat treatment, SDCmax of Fe-lGwt.%Cr system was more than 40% and that of Fe-5.5wt.%Al alloy was more than 30% after air-cooling heat treatment. Upon increasing of initial vibration amplitude, it is detected the migration of SDCmax into the region of small vibraton amplitude. Damping capacity is decreased rapidly as the internal stress Increases. Damping measurement equipment in the present study was ahln to give the more accurate results of damping properties in the small vibration amplitude region.

  • The high temperature properties of vanadium and molybdenum added high silicon ductile iron, so called V-Mo-Si ductile iron, were investigated. The (V,Mo) complex carbides and Mo carbides precipitated at the cellular boundaries of the as-cast specimens. The microhardness of the (V,Mo) carbides were in the range of 553-619, while that of the Mo carbides in the range of 341-390. The thermo-mechanical tests were carried out with a Gleeble system at 700 and $800^{\circ}C$ under vacuum condition. The tensile strengths of the specimen tested at $700^{\circ}C$ with the dynamic deformation rate of 50 mm/sec and those with the static deformation rate of 0.15 mm/sec were 235.7 and 115.3 MPa, while the reduction in area were 23.7 and 22.4%, respectively. At the high dynamic deformation rates, the tensile strength was steeply increased due to promoting the brittle fracture of pearlite in the matrix of the specimens. But the changes of the reduction in area with the deformation rates on the same specimens were negligible. The weight gain of the V-Mo-Si specimens oxidized in the air atmosphere for 6 hours at 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ were 1.1 and 4.1.%, respectively. The cross-sectional microstructure of oxidized specimens consisted of the porous external scale layer grown outside from the original surface, the dense internal scale layer grown into the original surface, the decarburized ferrite layer between the internal scale and the matrix of base metal. The (V,Mo) carbides and Mo carbides formed in the matrix of as-cast specimen did not decompose during oxidation at 900 for 24 hours in air atmosphere.

  • We are so used to the concept of the term 'space' that we do not question its conceptual validity. However, this paper argues that the notion of space prevailing all over the world, is not a universal concept that can be applicable to all architectures of the world, but is a particular concept that is generated from the Western way of thinking. This paper alms to identify the conceptual structure of the idea of space as it is originated in the tradition of the West, and, as an alternative view of space, tries to identify the nature of the view of space perceived in the tradition of the Eastern architecture. Comparison of the two views, that of the East and the West, and their meaning in the future of architecture, is another task to discuss in this paper. To be able to clarify the meaning of space in East Asian tradition, a set of new perspective of understanding of space was invited. They are ; 1. sky-earth(天地); insisting that the notion of space should be replaced within the context of sky, which is one half of sky-earth totality 2. energy of the air (空氣), space is not empty part inside of a building, but is a dynamic condition of air that is a part of the sky which always exist in form of energy 3. place(자리): instead of space, which, basically. is a man-made concept, idea of place is necessary, which include not only space but also earth Such concept of space which is different from the notion of space of the West, is meaningful not only to identify the idea of space in the East, but also to be able to contribute for more dynamic, varied, and balanced understanding of space.

  • Ice adhesion or cohesion leads to the decrease of the performance of ice making system, especially to dynamic type ice thermal storage system (DISS) which mainly forms ice from the flow of an aqueous solution. The ice adhesion is influenced by various parameters associated with operating or geometric condition. In this study, the influence on an adhesion of ice to the characteristic of cooling surface and to composition of an aqueous solution was fundamentally observed by using batch type cooling device,. a beaker. Three patterns of solution in each beaker were cooled with brine. Moreover, the characteristic of cooling surface on each beaker was distinguished to coating materials. Stirring power as a degree of the ice adhesion was measured. The stirring power to cooling heat transfer rate in each beaker was compared. As a result, the lowest stirring power of 8.9 W with non-adhesion of ice, was shown in the case of the aqueous solution of EG(4) + PG(1.5) + 1,6HD(1.5). in PE coating beaker.
