Since the ultraviolet (UV) flux of an integrated population is a good tracer of recent star formation activities, UV observations provide an important constraint on star formation history (SFH) in galaxies. We present UV color-magnitude relations (CMRs) of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster, based on Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV data and the Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC, Kim, S. in prep.). The EVCC covers an area 5.4 times larger (750 deg2) than the footprint of the classical Virgo cluster catalog by Binggeli and collaborators. We secure 1304 galaxies as members of the Virgo cluster and 526 galaxies of them are new objects not contained in the VCC. Morphological classification of galaxies in the EVCC is based on the optical image ("Primary Classification") and spectral feature ("Secondary Classification") of the SDSS data. We find that dwarf lenticular galaxies (dS0s) show a surprisingly distinct and tight locus separated from that of ordinary dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs), which is not clearly seen in previous CMRs. The dS0s in UV CMRs follow a steeper sequence than dEs and show bluer UV-optical color at a given magnitude. Most early type dwarf galaxies with blue UV colors (FUV-r < 6 and NUV-r < 4) are identified as those showing spectroscopic hints of recent or ongoing star formation activities. We explore the observed CMRs with population models of a luminosity-dependent delayed exponential star formation history. The observed CMR of dS0s is well matched with models with relatively long delayed star formation. Our results suggest that dS0s are most likely transitional objects at the stage of subsequent transformation of late-type progenitors to ordinary red dEs in the cluster environment. In any case, UV photometry provides a powerful tool to disentangle the diverse subpopulations of early-type dwarf galaxies and uncover their evolutionary histories.

We investigate surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of dwarf galaxies in field, group, and cluster environments. Using images from the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) Supernova Program (KSP) for the NGC 2784 group and SDSS for the Virgo cluster, SBP types are classified into profiles with single exponential (Type I), double exponential (Type II and Type III). Type II and Type III have smaller and larger outer sizes than inner sizes, respectively. SBP types of field dwarfs are compiled from a previous study. The distributions of SBP types are different in three environments. After comparing sizes of dwarfs in different environments, we suggest that since sizes of some dwarfs are changed due to the environmental effects, SBP types are able to be transformed. It makes that the distributions of SBP types in three environments are different.
We investigated the structural parameters of a sample of 30 dwarf galaxies(15 dEs and 15 dS0s) in the Virgo Cluster using i-band images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. Among 28 galaxies for which surface brightness profiles were derived from ellipse fittings, 23 galaxies had a single component that was adequately described by a generalized $S\acute{e}rsic$ function with a shape parameter ranging from n=0.5 to 2, while 5 galaxies(2 dEs and 3 dS0s) had bulge and disk components that were fitted by a generalized $S\acute{e}rsic$ function and an exponential function, respectively. Since the majority of dwarf galaxies in the present sample had a single component, it seems likely that genuine dS0 galaxies that have disk and bulge components are quite rare in the Virgo Cluster. The similarity in structural parameters of genuine dS0 galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with those of Magellanic-type galaxies implies that the progenitors of dwarf lenticular galaxies in the Virgo Cluster were most likely Magellanic-type galaxies if dS0s are harassed late-type spirals.
Star forming dwarf galaxies in various environments are attractive objects for investigating the environmental effects on chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies. Using SDSS DR7 spectroscopic data and GALEX ultraviolet (UV) imaging data, we study the chemical properties of star forming dwarf galaxies in various environments of the Virgo cluster, Ursa Major group, and field. We derived gas-phase abundance, galaxy mass, and UV specific star formation rate (sSFR) of subsample, early-type (ETD) and late-type star forming dwarf (LTD) galaxies, which are divided by visually classified galaxy morphology. We found no O/H enhancement of LTDs in cluster and group environments compared to the field, implying no environmental dependence of the mass-metallicity relation for LTDs. LTDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group have similar sSFR at a given galaxy mass, but they exhibit systematically lower sSFR than those in isolated field environment. We suggest that LTDs in the Virgo cluster are an infalling population that was recently accreted from the outside of the cluster. We found that ETDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group exhibit enhanced O/H compared to those in the field. However, no distinct difference of N/O of galaxies between different environments. The chemically evolved ETDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group also show similar mass-sSFR relation, but systematically lower sSFR at a fixed galaxy mass compared to the field counterparts. We suggest that ETDs in the Virgo cluster and Ursa Major group have evolved under the similar local environments. We also discuss the evolutionary path of ETDs and LTDs with respect to the environmental effects of ram pressure stripping and galaxy interaction/merging.
Various types of short culm rice mutants were obtained by means of gamma-ray irradiation. In the present paper morphological observation and analysis of silicate content of the mutants are reported. 1. Short culm type had more useful characters than bushy and dwarf types. 2. In short culm and bushy types the number of nodes both above and under ground was similar to the mother varieties, while in dwarf type it decreased. 3. In short culm types the variation of length of above-ground culm and internodes tended to vary relattive to the mother varieties. 4. Positive correlation was found between culm length and the first and fourth internode length in short culm type. 5. Silicate content increased in short culm type-the increment being variety specific.

The HI ring serendipitously found in the Leo I galaxy group is unique in size in the Local Universe. It is ~200kpc in diameter with MHI~$1.67{\times}109M{\odot}$, surrounding a pair of early type galaxies M105 and NGC 3384. Its origin is still under debate whether it is the remnant of formation of a galaxy group (primordial) or formed from stripped material during galaxy-galaxy interaction (tidal origin). Intriguingly a number of dwarf galaxies have been identified along the gas ring (with or without optical counterpart). Various properties of these dwarf galaxies such as dark matter content, color, and/or metallicity will allow us to pin down the origin of this large scale HI ring. We have obtained a mosaicked CFHT MegaCam image and the EVLA HI cube of the large scale gas ring. In this work we present optical and gas properties of dwarf galaxies identified in the CFHT data.
We present the chemical properties of star-forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) in five filamentary structures (Leo II A, Leo II B, Leo Minor, Canes Venatici, and Virgo III) around the Virgo cluster using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectroscopic data and Galaxy Evolution Explorer ultraviolet photometric data. We investigate the relationship between stellar mass, gas-phase metallicity, and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of SFDGs in the Virgo filaments in comparison to those in the Virgo cluster and field. We find that, at a given stellar mass, SFDGs in the Virgo filaments show lower metallicity and higher sSFR than those in the Virgo cluster on average. We observe that SFDGs in the Virgo III filament show enhanced metallicities and suppressed star formation activities comparable to those in the Virgo cluster, whereas SFDGs in the other four filaments exhibit similar properties to the field counterparts. Moreover, about half of the galaxies in the Virgo III filament are found to be morphologically transitional dwarf galaxies that are supposed to be on the way to transforming into quiescent dwarf early-type galaxies. Based on the analysis of the galaxy perturbation parameter, we propose that the local environment represented by the galaxy interactions might be responsible for the contrasting features in "chemical pre-processing" found in the Virgo filaments.
In dward nova we assume the primary star as a white dwarf and the secondary as the late type star which filled Roche lobe. Mass flow from the secondary star leads to the formation of thin accretion disk around the white dwarf. We use the $\alpha$ parameter as viscosity to maintain the disk form and propose that the outburst in dwarf nova cause the step increase of source term. With these assumptions we solve the basic equations of stellar structure using New-Raphson method. We show the physical parameters like temperature, density, pressure, opacity, surface density, height and flux to the radius of disk. Changing the value of $\alpha$, we compare several parameters when mass flow rate is constant with those of when luminosity of disk is brightest. At the same time, we obtain time-dependent variations of luminosity and mass of disk. We propose the suitable range of $\alpha$is 0.15-0.18 to the difference of luminosity. We compare several parameters of disk with those of the normal late type stars which have the same molecular weight of disk. These show the temperature and pressure of disk are similar to those of normal stars but the density of disk is lower. Maybe the outburst in dwarf nova is due to the variation of the $\alpha$ value instead of increment of mass flow from the secondary star.
Role of environments is one of today's most widely discussed and debated topic in the field of extra-galactic astronomy. Extreme morphology-density relations found in low-mass galaxies are considered to be the result of an effective role played by environment in the evolution of these galaxies. I will present the results from our dedicated study of early-type dwarf galaxies (dEs) in different environments using imaging and spectroscopic data. We find that Virgo cluster dEs have a variety of structural and kinematic properties. A significant fraction of dEs possesses disk features, such as spiral arm and bar, while a central nucleus seems to be universal in these low mass galaxies. We also find that a majority of dEs are fast rotator and their rotation curves are much steeper than that of spiral galaxies of similar mass. Finally I will discuss how the different environmental mechanisms, i.e., gas-stripping or tidal interaction, can contribute to form heterogeneous dEs in Virgo cluster.
We report the first detection of RR Lyrae variable stars in the Crater II dwarf galaxy, a recently discovered ultra-faint satellite of the Milky Way. Based on B, V time series photometry obtained with the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) at CTIO, Chile, we have identified ~45 fundamental-mode (ab-type) and ~2 first-overtone (c-type) RR Lyrae stars by adopting template light-curve fitting method. Our preliminary analysis suggests an Oosterhoff-intermediate classification of this galaxy from the mean period of the RRab stars, <$P_{ab}$> ${\simeq}0.63$ days, and the location of them on the period-amplitude diagram. We discuss the properties of the RR Lyare stars in this galaxy.
