  • This paper presents a mechanical design of the deepwater pipeline wall thickness using the recent design rules. Characteristics and limitations of the new codes were identified through a case study design in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the ASME, API, and DVD codes, the code of federal regulations (CFR) was also utilized in the design. It was found that conservatism still exists within the collapse prediction for water depth greater than 1500m. Comparision of the results from DNV and API codes were presented.

  • Experimental studies on the aerodynamic coupling effect on natural frequencies, critical speed and flutter instability of rotating disks are investigated in this paper. The theoretical analysis uses a fluid-structure model where the aerodynamic effects are represented in terms of elastic, lift and damping and stiffness components. The experiments performed using a vacuum chamber and ASMO/DVD disks rotating in vacuum, open and enclosure in several gaps with stationary wall give three main results. One is that the aerodynamic effect by the surrounding air reduces the natural frequencies and critical speeds of the vibration modes. The second is that natural frequency of disks rotating in open air is larger than that in enclosure. Finally, it is shown that the disk vibration is reduced as the gap between the disk and the rigid wall decreases.

  • Free vibration characteristics of an initially stressed CD/DVD disk, which is designed for increasing critical speeds of current optical disks, are analyzed using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique based on variational formulations. Natural frequencies of the new disk depend on membrane stresses caused by disk rotation as well as residual stresses imposed during the cooling process of the injection molding. Critical speeds are calculated for the various initial patterns of radial and circumferential stresses. Initially imposed tensile stresses increase the natural frequencies of all the vibration modes except zero nodal diameter mode, whose natural frequency is independent of circumferential stress. A new disk with initial tensile stress of 0.5MPa is shown to have its critical speed about 30 % higher than the current optical disk.

  • There are 4 servo systems in a DVD drive such as a focus servo system, a tracking servo system, a sled servo system and a spindle servo system. Focus servo system maintains relative distance between lens and disk. In this paper, two plant models for the focus servo system will be presented. One of them is newly developed and the other is conventional. Focus error signal between lens and disk is detected using LDV 2 beam method. (omitted)

  • Current information storage devices, such as HDD, CD/DVD-ROM/RW, probe-based memory and cabon nano tubes, are compared with biological information storage mechanisms in DNA and brain memory. Various biological components in living cells are analyzed based on "irreducible complexity" of intelligent design concept. Linear and arel density of information stored in the biological and mechanical storages are compared for the applications and developments of new storage devices.

  • In this study, experimental tests for driving noise of various optical disk drives (ODD) have been performed using 1/2' microphone noise measurement system. Several new and old ODD models by different manufacturers are practically considered and compared for realistic driving conditions. Sound insulation case with absorbing material for the present experimental tests is designed and constructed using CATIA system. It is found that average data transfer rate, operating RPM, and sound noise level seem to be different for the ODD models with same denoted speed by different manufacturers. Moreover, driving sound noise level can be largely affected by both tray shape and driving speed even for the condition of the same apparent data transfer rate.

  • The suspension of the optical pickup actuator is damped by the presence of silicone rubber damper bond at its termination. In spite of the presence of it, the actuator still exhibits a strong mechanical resonance which affects its settling time and vibrational characteristics. This resonance can cause errors in reading information from the disk, particularly in high speed CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. Ferrofluids are stable colloidal suspensions of sub-micron sized magnetic particles in a carrier liquid. In the actuator design, ferrofluid is applied to the surface of the magnets until the quantity is sufficient to maintain intimate contact with the bobbin/carrier assembly. The fluid is retained in the magnetic field and its viscosity provides the desired mechanical damping to the moving assembly, improving the actuators settling time and vibrational characteristics. Access time is also improved, particularly on warped or eccentric discs.
