  • In cognitive radios, exponentially distributed idle period(EIP) is considered in this paper. In the EIP case, durations of idle periods are be limited and varied by primary traffic arrivals. Accordingly, we first analyze the idle period utilization which can be achieved by the slotted ALOHA in cognitive radio communications. The idle period utilization is a newly defined performance metric to measure the transmission performance of the secondary network as effective time durations utilized for successful secondary transmissions in an idle period. Then, the idle period utilization is maximized through controlling the data transmission time. All technical processes are mathematically analyzed and expressed as closed form solutions.

  • This paper presents a wavelet-based neural network technology for the detection and classification of the short durations type of power quality disturbances. Transients happen during very short durations to the nano- and microsecond. Thus, a method for detecting and classifying transient signals at the same time and In an automatic combines the properties of the wavelet transform and the advantages of neural networks. Especially, the additional feature extraction to improve the recognition rate is considered. The configuration of the hardware of TMS320C6711 DSP based with 16 channel 20Mhz sampling rate A/D(Analog to Digital) converter and some case studies are described.

  • Despite their tilde application of some traditional project management techniques like the Program Evaluation and Review Technique, they lack of learning, one of important factors in many disciplines today due to a static view far prefect progression. This study proposes a framework for estimation by learning based on a Linear Bayesian approach. As a project progresses, we sequentially observe the durations of completed activities. By reflecting this newly available information to update the distribution of remaining activity durations and thus project duration, we can implement a decision support system that updates e.g. the expected project completion time as well as the probabilities of completing the project within talc due date and by a certain date. By Implementing such customized systems, project manager can be aware of changing project status more effectively and better revise resource allocation plans.

  • This paper investigates phonation types of Malay plosives and compares Malay plosives with Korean ones in terms of VOT, F0, duration of closure, and durations of the preceding and following vowels. This study is significant in that it specifies phonetic characteristics of phonation types of the two languages and provides phonetic bases for teaching and learning either of the two languages. The results showed that Malay voiceless plosives are higher than voiced ones in VOT, F0, duration of closure but the other way in durations of the preceding and following vowels. The distribution of VOT suggests that Malay voiceless plosives are close to Korean fortis plosives.

  • This paper addresses a fundamental research subject to complement and improve current domestic design specifications for the strong motion duration criterion and the envelop function of artificial accelerograms that can be applied to the earthquake-proof design of nuclear structures. The criteria for design response spectra and strong motion duration suggested by WRC RG 1.60 and ASCE Standard 4-98 are commonly being used in the profession, and they are first compared with each other and reviewed. By applying 152 real strong earthquake records that are over magnitude of 5 in the rock sites to the strong motion duration criterion in ASCE 4-98, an empirical regression model that predicts the strong motion duration as a function of earthquake magnitude is then developed. Using synthetically generated earthquake time histories for the five cases whose strong motion durations vary from 6 to 15 seconds, a seismic analysis is conducted to identify effects of the strong motion durations on the seismic responses of nuclear structures.

  • Several pretreatment methods have been developed to reduce the inorganic arsenic, which is known to be highly harmful to humans, among various arsenic species present in hijiki and rice. The pretreatment methods were selected and developed as methods that can be non-harmful even after treatment and easily applied. Hijiki was applied by two methods. One was soaking in water at room temperature for various durations and the other was boiling of it in water for a short period of time. Rice was soaked in water with different rice-to-water ratios for various durations. The most effective method that reduced the inorganic arsenic in hijiki was to repeat parboiling for 5 minutes twice, which led to 79% reduction of the inorganic arsenic in it. In the case of rice, soaking for 24 hours at the ratio of 1:5 (rice:water) resulted in 51% reduction of inorganic arsenic in rice.

  • This study analyzed the pronunciations of Japanese fricative /s/ and affricate /ts/ by 24 Japanese and 40 Korean speakers using the rise and steady+decay durations of their frication part in order to clarify the characteristics of their pronunciations. Discriminant analysis revealed that Japanese speakers' /s/ and /ts/ were well classified by the acoustic boundaries defined by a discriminant function. Using this boundary, Korean speakers' production of /s/ and /ts/ was analyzed. It was found that, in Korean speakers' pronunciation, misclassification of /s/ as /ts/ was more frequent than that of /ts/ as /s/, indicating that both the /s/ and /ts/ distributions shift toward short rise and steady+decay durations. Moreover, their distributions were very similar to those of Korean fricatives and affricates. These results suggest that Korean speakers' classification error might be because of their use of Korean lax and tense fricatives to pronounce Japanese /s/, and Korean lax and tense affricates to pronounce Japanese /ts/.

  • This paper introduces stochastic cash-flow modeling integrated with simulation based scheduling. The system makes use of CPM schedule data exported from commercial scheduling software, computes the best fit probability distribution functions (PDFs) of historical activity durations, assigns the PDFs identified to respective activities, simulates the schedule network, computes the deterministic and stochastic project cash-flows, plots the corresponding cash flow diagrams, and estimates the best fit PDFs of overdraft and net profit of a project. It analyzes the effect of different distributions of activity durations on the distribution of overdrafts and net profits, and improves reliability compared to deterministic cash flow analysis.
