  • Steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) typically have inter-story drift concentrations at lower stories during earthquakes as found from previous research. Hinged walls (HWs) can be used as structural strengthening components to force the MRFs deform uniformly along the building height. However, large moment demands are often observed on HWs and make the design of HWs non-economical. This paper proposes a method to reduce the moment demand on HWs using a ductile connection system between the MRFs and the HWs. The ductile connection system is designed with a yield strength and energy dissipation capacity, for the purpose of limiting the seismic forces transferred to the HWs and dissipating seismic energy. Nonlinear time history analyses were performed using 10 far-filed earthquakes at maximum considered earthquake level. The analysis results show that the proposed ductile connection system can reduce: (1) seismic moment demands in the HWs; (2) floor accelerations; (3) the connection force between HWs and MRFs.

  • In this study, a simple moment-resisting precast concrete beam-column connection is proposed for highly seismic zone using dywidag ductile rod [DDC]. DDC is superior system for ductility, energy dissipation capacity, connection strength, and drift capacity. A study was carried out to investigate the connection behavior subjected to cyclic inelastic loading. Four Precast beam-column interior connections and one monolithic connection will be tested. The variables will be examined were the strength relationship between joint's ductile rod and beam reinforcement for gain energy dissipation capacity. The specimens will be tested only reverse cyclic loading in accordance with a prescribed displacement history. Connection performance is evaluated on the basis of ductility, energy dissipation capacity, connection strength, and drift capacity. the precast connection using DDC is capable of matching of exceeding the performance of the monolithic connection and thereby provides moment-resisting behavior.

  • No specific guidelines are available for computing the bearing strength of connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. There were carried out analytical and experimental studies on connection between steel coupling beam and concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. Experiments were carried out to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behavior in connection between steel coupling beam and shear wall, i.e., the auxiliary stud bolts attached to the steel beam flanges and the transverse ties at the top and the bottom steel beam flanges. In addition, additional test were conducted to verify the strength equations of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The proposed equations in this study were in good agreement with both our test results and other test data from the literature.

  • The purpose of this study is to model the seismic behavior of Welded Unreinforced Flange and Bolted (WUF-B) connections with post-Northridge details and evaluate the system performance of the builidings with WUF-B connections. For this purpose, based on test results, mathematical model of the connections were developed and compared with test results. This connection model take into account both panel zone deformation and connection fractures. Then, SAC Phase II 3 and 9-story buildings were modeled using the connection model developed in this study. From nonlinear static pushover analysis of the buildings, maximum strength, maximum roof drift, and so forth are investigated for the buildings with post-Northridge details. Analysis results were compared with those of buildings with pre-Northridge details and ductile connections with no fractures.

  • The performance of a newly generated steel connection known as SidePlateTM moment connection for seismic loading and progressive collapse phenomenon has been investigated in this paper. The seismic evaluation portion of the study included a thorough study on of interstory drift angles and flexural strengths based on 2010 AISC Seismic Provisions while the acceptance criteria provided in UFC 4-023-03 guideline to resist progressive collapse must be satisfied by the rotational capacity of the connections. The results showed that the SidePlate moment connection was capable of attaining adequate rotational capacity and developing full inelastic capacity of the connecting beam. Moreover, the proposed connection demonstrated an exceptional performance for keeping away the plastic hinges from the connection and exceeding interstory drift angle of 0.06 rad with no fracture developments in beam flange groove-welded joints. The test results indicated that this type of connection had strength, stiffness and ductility to be categorized as a rigid, full-strength and ductile connection.

  • Under severe lateral loads, ductile moments-resisting reinforced concrete frames will be subjected to large loads and displacements. Thus, large deformation and shear stree are occurred at the beam-column joints which are the most critical region in ductile moments-resisting system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the shear strength of beam-column connection using high strength concrete. Four subassemblies were designed 2/3 scale of read structures and tested. The obtained results are as follows. 1) The transverse beams increase the shear resistance and ductility of joint, 2) The slab was contributed to increase of the flexural capacity of the beam, but was not contributed to increase the joint ductility under cyclic loads. 3) The shear stress factors. given by the ACI code would be modified in evaluating the shear strength of beam-column joints of frame which were constructed with high-strength concrete.

  • In the past decade, various experimental programmes were undertaken to address the lack of information on the interaction between steel coupling beams and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid coupled shear wall system. In this paper, the seismic performance of steel coupling beam-wall connections in a hybrid coupled shear wall system is examined through results of an experimental research programme where three 2/3-scale specimens were tested under cyclic loading. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behaviour on the steel coupling beam-wall connection, i.e., the face bearing plates and the horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections. Panel shear strength reflects enhancement achieved through mobilization of the reinforced concrete panel using face bearing plates and/or horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections.
