  • In general, the quality of a welding process tends to vary with depending on the work environment or external disturbances. Hence, in order to achieve the desirable quality of welding, we should have the optimal welding condition that is not significantly affected by these changes in the environment or external disturbances. In this study, we used a dual response surface method in consideration of both the mean output variables and the standard deviation in order to optimize the V-groove arc welding process. The input variables for GMA welding process with the dual response surface are welding voltage, welding current and welding speed. The output variables are the welding quality function using the shape factor of bead geometry. First, we performed welding experiment on the interested area according to the central composite design. From the results obtained, we derived the regression model on the mean and standard deviation between the input and output variables of the welding process and then obtained the dual response surface. Finally, using the grid search method, we obtained the input variables that minimize the object function which led to the optimal V-groove arc welding process.

  • Using a disturbance observer is effective in enhancing the performance of dynamic system in presence of disturbances. Although various types of disturbance observers have been proposed to improve sensitivity of systems, there exist poor transient responses due to cross-couplings among disturbance observer loops. In this paper, dual disturbance observer (DOB) is proposed to reduce the effects of the cross-couplings. A different type of loop transfer function is proposed for external disturbance observer. While improving the sensitivity function by adding external DOB, it also provides improved complementary sensitivity function. The proposed dual DOB is applied to a commercial optical disk drive tracking system. It is shown that the dual DOB is an effective method in rejecting the effect of disturbance as well as improving the tracking performance.

  • Using disturbance observer (DOB) is effective in enhancing the performance of dynamic system in the presence of disturbances. Recently the definition of disturbance has been expanded to modeling uncertainty including parameter variation, internal disturbance. Various structures of DOB have been proposed to improve sensitivity of system for better disturbance rejection performance. However in the case of improvement of sensitivity function, it tends to bring poor transient response due to cross-coupling and phase lag. Furthermore it could be very sensitive to measurement noise due to increased peak of complementary sensitivity function. In this paper, a dual disturbance observer (Dual-DOB) is proposed to reduce the effect of such cross-coupling. It is possible for us to improve the sensitivity function with additional external DOB with hardly affecting complementary sensitivity function. Thus it is able to have robustness against measurement noise. Since we are able to design DOBs of internal and external loop independently, we could prevent transient response quality from degrading while improving the sensitivity function. The proposed Dual-DOB is applied to a commercial optical disk drive tracking servo system. The experimental result shows that the Dual-DOB is an effective method in rejecting the disturbance as well as improving the tracking performance.

  • This paper presents a DSP based direct digital control design and implementation for a high power boost converter. A single loop and dual loop voltage control are digitally implemented and compared. The real time workshop (RTW) is used for automatic real-time code generation. Experimental results of a 20 kW boost converter based on the TMS320F2808 DSP during reference voltage changes, input voltage changes, and load disturbances are presented. The results show that the dual loop control achieves better steady state and transient performance than the single loop control. In addition, the experimental results validate the effectiveness of using the RTW for automatic code generation to speed up the system implementation.

  • Natural convection in a horizontal annulus with the inner cylinder heated by the application of a constant heat flux and the isothermally cooled outer cylinder is considered, and the transition of flows and the bifurcation phenomenon are numerically investigated for air with Pr=0.7. The zero initial condition always induces a crescent-sheped eddy flow. A bicellular flow in which the fluid descends along the vertical central plane of the annulus can be obtained at high Rayleigh number by introducing artificial numerical disturbances. Dual solutions are found above a certain critical Rayleigh number. Hysteresis phenomena have not been observed.

  • Recently, near-field recording (NFR) disk drive schemes have been proposed with a view to increasing recording densities of hard disk drives. Compared with hard disk drives. NFR disk drives have narrower track pitches and are exposed to more severe periodic disturbances resulting from eccentric rotation of the disk. It is difficult to meet servo system design specifications for NFR disk drives with conventional VCM actuators in that the servo system for an NFR disk drive generally requires a feater gain and higher bandwidth. To tackle the problem various dual-stage actuator systems composed of a microactuator mounted on top of a conventional VCM actuator have been proposed. This article deals with the problem of designing a tracking servo system far an NFR disk drive adopting a dual-stage actuator. We summarize design constraints pertaining to the dual-stage servo system and present a new servo scheme using iterative teaming control. We design feedback compensators and an iterative teaming controller for a target plant and verify the validity of the proposed control scheme through a computer simulation.

  • This paper provides an evaluation of an optimization-based, multiple-input double-output (MIDO) run-to-run (R2R) control scheme for general semiconductor manufacturing processes. The controller in this research, termed adaptive dual response optimizing controller (ADROC), can serve as a process optimizer as well as a recipe regulator between consecutive runs of wafer fabrication. In evaluation, it is assumed that the equipment model could be appropriately described by a pair of second-order polynomial functions in terms of a set of controllable variables. Of practical relevance is to consider a drifting effect in the equipment model since in common semiconductor practice the process tends to drift due to machine aging and tool wearing. We select a typical application of R2R control to chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) in semiconductor manufacturing in this evaluation, and there are five different CMP process scenarios demonstrated, including mean shift, variance increase, and IMA disturbances. For the controller, ADROC, an on-line estimation technique is implemented in a self-tuning (ST) control manner for the adaptation purpose. Subsequently, an ad hoc global optimization algorithm based on the dual response approach, arising from the response surface methodology (RSM) literature, is used to seek the optimum recipe within the acceptability region for the execution of next run. The main components of ADROC are described and its control performance is assessed. It reveals from the evaluation that ADROC can provide excellent control actions for the MIDO R2R situations even though the process exhibits complicated, nonlinear interaction effects between control variables, and the drifting disturbances.

  • This paper proposes an efficient measurement system for the velocity and direction of the wind using the dual rotor wind power generator in vessel. Conventional digital measurement system recognizes the direction and the velocity of the wind using the electric compass or synchronous motor and Vane probe method using hall sensors. But each system has its own short-comings: the synchronous motor has a larger measurement error than the magnetic compass and magnetic compass is weak for the external disturbances such as fluctuation of the vessel. To compensate these short-comings, this paper proposes a new compensation algorithm for the fluctuation errors according to the external interference and the unexpected movement of the vessel along the roll and pitch directions. The proposed system is implemented with the dual compasses and a synchronous motor. The proposed independent power generation system can be operated by itself and can raise the efficiency of the wind power generation systems of 30 ~ 400 W installed along the vertical and horizontal axes. The proposed system also realizes the efficient and reliable power production system by the MPPT algorithm for the real-time recognition of the wind direction and velocity. An advanced switching algorithm for the battery charging system has been also proposed. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified through the real experiments and the results are demonstrated.

  • Disturbance observer(DOB) is effective to enhance the performance of system in the presence of disturbances. Various types of disturbance observer have been proposed to improve sensitivity function of system. However, it has been observed that current DOBs tend to bring poor transient response due to cross-couplings. This paper proposes a new type of disturbance observer to reduce effect of cross-couplings and provide simpler structure than Dual DOB. Finally, we verify the performance of the proposed DOB through numerical simulations.
