Bone Suppression on Chest Radiographs for Pulmonary Nodule Detection: Comparison between a Generative Adversarial Network and Dual-Energy Subtraction

  • Objective: To compare the effects of bone suppression imaging using deep learning (BSp-DL) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) and bone subtraction imaging using a dual energy technique (BSt-DE) on radiologists' performance for pulmonary nodule detection on chest radiographs (CXRs). Materials and Methods: A total of 111 adults, including 49 patients with 83 pulmonary nodules, who underwent both CXR using the dual energy technique and chest CT, were enrolled. Using CT as a reference, two independent radiologists evaluated CXR images for the presence or absence of pulmonary nodules in three reading sessions (standard CXR, BSt-DE CXR, and BSp-DL CXR). Person-wise and nodule-wise performances were assessed using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) and alternative free-response ROC (AFROC) curve analyses, respectively. Subgroup analyses based on nodule size, location, and the presence of overlapping bones were performed. Results: BSt-DE with an area under the AFROC curve (AUAFROC) of 0.996 and 0.976 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, and BSp-DL with AUAFROC of 0.981 and 0.958, respectively, showed better nodule-wise performance than standard CXR (AUAFROC of 0.907 and 0.808, respectively; p ≤ 0.005). In the person-wise analysis, BSp-DL with an area under the ROC curve (AUROC) of 0.984 and 0.931 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, showed better performance than standard CXR (AUROC of 0.915 and 0.798, respectively; p ≤ 0.011) and comparable performance to BSt-DE (AUROC of 0.988 and 0.974; p ≥ 0.064). BSt-DE and BSp-DL were superior to standard CXR for detecting nodules overlapping with bones (p < 0.017) or in the upper/middle lung zone (p < 0.017). BSt-DE was superior (p < 0.017) to BSp-DL in detecting peripheral and sub-centimeter nodules. Conclusion: BSp-DL (GAN-based bone suppression) showed comparable performance to BSt-DE and can improve radiologists' performance in detecting pulmonary nodules on CXRs. Nevertheless, for better delineation of small and peripheral nodules, further technical improvements are required.

  • This paper offer the characteristics for the detection and classification of biological and non-biological aerosol particles in the air by using laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) based Bio-aerosol Detection System (BDS). The BDS is mainly consist of an optical chamber, in-outlet nozzle system, 405 nm diode laser, an avalanche photo detector (APD) for scattering signal and photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for fluorescence signals in two different wavelength range ; F1, 510-600 nm and F2, 435-470 nm. The detection characteristics, especially ratio of fluorescence signal intensity were examined using well-known components : polystylene latex (PSL), fluorescence PSL, $2{\mu}m$ of SiO2 micro sphere, dried yeast, NADH, ovalbumin, fungicide powder and standard dust. The results indicated that the 405 nm diode laser-based LIF instrument can be a useful bio-aerosol detection system for unexpected biological threaten alter in real-time to apply for dual-use technology in military and civilian fields.

  • This paper proposes an image processing algorithm for detecting obstacles on road-lane using DLI(disparity of lane-related information) that is generated by stereo images acquired from dual cameras mounted on a moving vehicle. The DLI is a disparity that is acquired using single lane information from road lane detection. For the purpose to reduce processing time, we use small blocks obtained by edge-histogram based blocking logic. This algorithm detects moving objects such as preceding vehicles and obstacles. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in a personal computer with the road image data of a typical highway. We successfully performed experiments under a wide variety of road conditions without changing parameter values or adding human intervention. Experimental results also showed that the proposed DLI is quite successful.

  • A small engine-oil-deterioration detection sensor was developed and installed at the tip of a dipstick gage. The sensor part was manufactured using printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing technology. A set of sensor covers was installed in order to protect the sensor and realize good signal stability. The small engine-oil-deterioration detection sensor system comprised a dual sensor having etched copper electrodes coated with gold and ceramic, a flexible PCB (FPCB) acting as electric wire, and a dummy PCB with only a lock connector. The sensor can easily be installed by insertion through the guide tube of a dipstick gage. Thus, a driver can easily handle it without further installation equipment. The sensor can determine the level of deterioration in the engine oil by estimating the corresponding dielectric constant of the engine oil.

  • For visual navigation, mobile robot can use a stereo camera which has large field of view. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to detect and recognize human face on the basis of such camera system. In this paper, a new coarse to fine detection algorithm is proposed. For coarse detection, nearly face-like areas are found in entire image using dual ellipse templates.   • In this paper, a redundancy management system for aircraft is studied, and FDI (Fault Detection and Isolation) algorithm of inertial sensor system is proposed. UAV system cannot allow triple or quadruple hardware redundancy due to the limitations on space and weight. In the UAV system with dual sensors, it is very difficult to identify the faulty sensor. Also, conventional FDI method cannot isolate multiple faults in a triple redundancy system. In this paper, hardware based FDI technique is proposed, which combines a parity equation approach with the wavelet based technique, which is a model-free FDI method. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed FDI method, numerical simulations are performed.

Comparison of Two Methods for Stationary Incident Detection Based on Background Image

  • In general, background subtraction based methods are used to detect the moving objects in visual tracking applications. In this paper we employed background subtraction based scheme to detect the temporarily stationary objects. We proposed two schemes for stationary object detection and we compare those in terms of detection performance and computational complexity. In the first approach we used single background and in the second approach we used dual backgrounds, generated with different learning rates, in order to detect temporarily stopped object. Finally, we used normalized cross correlation (NCC) based image comparison to monitor and track the detected stationary object in a video scene. The proposed method is robust with partial occlusion, short time fully occlusion and illumination changes, as well as it can operate in real time.

이중 교신 위성 시스템의 MIMO 공동 복조의 적용성에 대한 연구 (Study on the applicability of MIMO Joint Decoding to Dual-Contact Satellite Systems)

  • 본 논문에서는 X-밴드 대역의 하향 링크 시스템을 사용하는 2기의 저궤도 위성이 지상국으로 각각의 영상 데이터를 동시에 전송하는 이중 교신 위성 시스템 상황에서 공간 다중화 MIMO 기법의 적용 가능성을 제안한다. 2기의 위성이 2기의 지상국 안테나의 지향각 내에 위치하면서 각각의 영상 데이터를 동시에 지상국 안테나로 송신하는 경우 각각의 위성은 상대 안테나 이득에 따라 위성 상호 간 간섭으로 작용하며, 이는 추가적인 간섭 완화 조치 없이는 성능 저하를 초래할 수 있다. 이러한 성능 열화를 완화시키고자 공동 복조를 위해 공간 다중화 MIMO 기법을 적용하였다. 특히 지상 안테나에서 두 위성 간의 각도 차이에 의해 결정되는 상대 안테나 이득은 이중 교신 위성 시스템을 모델링하는데 있어서 중요한 역할을 한다. 안테나 이득의 수학적 모델로부터 계산된 안테나 이득을 포함한 MIMO 채널의 조건수 분석을 이용하였다. 모의실험 결과를 통해 ZF-SIC, MMSE-SIC 및 ML과 같은 다양한 검출 기법을 이용한 공간 다중화 MIMO 기법을 이중 교신 위성 시나리오에 적용할 수 있음을 제시하였다.
