  • Experimental external collector type solar lumber dryer of $1m^3$ of maximum capacity with $1.6m^3$ of collector area was designed and constructed. The seasonal performance of solar dryer, including air-conditions, energy efficiency, and drying characteristics of 3cm-thick red pine and douglas-fir lumber was investigated. Also, the economic analysis was carried out. Annual average solar drying rate was about 2 times faster than air-drying rate with no significant difference in the amount of drying defects. But in initial drying stage air-drying rate in winter was much faster and those in spring and autumn were slightly slower than solar drying rate in each season. Annual average energy efficiency of solar-dryer and-collector was 25% and 57%, respectively. Fuel savings were over 50% at 15% of energy inflation rate and the payback period was estimated as 6.10 years at 30% of energy inflation rate.

  • The vacuum drying characteristics of water-saturated porous media were studied experimentally. The water-saturated porous media, water-saturated sand layer, was heated by the isothermal bottom wall of the rectangular vessel. The vacuum drying rate and temperature distribution of the sand layer were measured and calculated under a variety of conditions of heated wall temperature, vacuum rate, and thickness of the test material. It was found that the drying rate due to the heat and mass teansfer is greatly influenced by the heated wall temperature, vacuum rate, and thickness of the test material.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of grain and veneer thickness on drying rate, required energy consumption, and drying defects such as checking, end waving, and burning during a far-infrared radiation drying process of decorative veneers of hard maple and beech. Most of the veneer could be dried from green to in-use moisture content within 30 to 360 seconds. The drying rates were significantly affected by veneer thickness, but there was little difference between edge-and flat-sliced veneers. The formation of checking during drying test was none or very slight. The percentages of the veneers defected by checks were higher in the flat-sliced veneers than in the edge-sliced veneers. The maximum end wavinesses in the flat-sliced veneers were almost 1.6 to 3 times larger than that in the edge-sliced veneers. All veneers were fee from burned marks during drying test.

  • This paper was aimed to study the drying kinetics of coffee and to investigate the thin-layer drying kinetics of coffee by using a convective air dryer. The coffee was dried for the temperatures of 40, 50 and $60^{\circ}C$ with relative humidity in the range of 14-25% the airflow rate fixed at 1 m/s. According to the experiment result, the drying rate curve showed that drying process took place only in the falling rate period. Seven thin layer drying models (Newton, Page, Henderson and Pabis, Logarithmic, Wang and Singh, Two terms, Modified Henderson and Pabis) were fitted to the experimental moisture content data. The Two-trem model was found to be a better model for describing the characteristics of coffee for the temperatures of 40, 50 and $60^{\circ}C$. The effective moisture diffusivity of coffee increased when the drying temperature increased. The value was in the range of $4.5028{\times}10^{-11}$ to $6.4803{\times}10^{-11}m^2/s$.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the hot air drying characteristics of squash slices depending on the drying conditions (input air velocity, input air temperature, and sample thickness). Methods: The developed drying system was equipped with a controllable air blower and electric finned heater, drying chamber, and ventilation fan. Squash (summer squash called Korean zucchini) samples were cut into slices of two different thicknesses (5 and 10 mm). These were then dried at two different input air temperatures (60 and $70^{\circ}C$) and air velocities (5 and 7 m/s). Six well-known drying models were tested to describe the experimental drying data. A non-linear regression analysis was applied to determine model constants and statistical indices such as the coefficient of determination ($R^2$), reduced chi-square (${\chi}^2$), and root mean square error (RMSE). In addition, the effective moisture diffusivity ($D_{eff}$) was estimated based on the curve of ln(MR) versus drying time. Results: The results clearly showed that drying time decreased with an increase in input air temperature. Slice thickness also affected the drying time. Air velocity had a greater influence on drying time at $70^{\circ}C$ than at $60^{\circ}C$ for both thicknesses. All drying models accurately described the drying curve of squash slices regardless of slice thickness and drying conditions; the Modified Henderson and Pabis model had the best performance with the highest R2 and the lowest RMSE values. The effective moisture diffusivity ($D_{eff}$) changes, obtained from Fick's diffusion method, were between $1.67{\times}10^{-10}$ and $7.01{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$. The moisture diffusivity was increased with an increase in input air temperature, velocity, and thickness. Conclusions: The drying time of squash slices varied depending on input temperature, velocity, and thickness of slices. The further study is necessary to figure out optimal drying condition for squash slices with retaining its original quality.

  • The absorption characteristics of Korean yam powder according to different drying methods were investigated. The physical properties of yam powder by different drying methods were showed the biggest porosity in freeze drying sample, while the smallest in hot air drying sample. No difference was founded in proximate compositions of yam powder by various drying methods. The amount of total phenolic compound and Vit C were showed the bigger decrement in freeze dried sample than other drying methods. The time reaching to equilibrium moisture content were determined in 12 days. Monolayer moisture contents were predicted to 0.0508∼0.0588 by BET equation and 0.0705∼0.0811 g H2O/g solid by GAB equation. BET equation for isothermal absorption curve showed over 0.95 R-square for every drying methods. GAB equation showed over 0.99 in vacuum and freeze drying but a poor R-square in hot air drying.

  • This study is conducted to analyze the drying characteristics of domestically produced Lycii Fructus for improving drying conditions which was dependant on the shape and materials of drying plate. The materials of the drying plates were steel, aluminum and ABS resin, and each plate was shaped semicircle, quadrangular pyramid, and triangle pyramid. Also, mesh plate, the most general type was included. In other words, 10 kinds of plates were made and tested. The test was conducted at $45^{\circ}C$, for 24 hours and moisture content was measured every 4 hours. The quality of tested Lycii Fructus was measured by colorimeter after drying. The experimental results show that regardless of species of Lycii Fructus, the drying rate of the aluminium plate shaped quadrangular pyramid was fastest, 3.11%w.b./h. Except the mesh plate, the drying rate of most plates was about over 2.52%w.b./h. The quality of Lycii Fructus dried on the aluminium plate shaped quadrangular pyramid was the highest, and it was easiest to separate the dried Lycii Fructus from the aluminum plate shaped quadrangular pyramid.

  • Recently electronic circuit pattern printing technologies like antennas of RFID process are paid attention. oven drying system is being used since drying and curing time of RFID Tag Gravure printing normally takes from 5 minutes and up to 30 minutes long. In this case the parental material which is of a sheet shape is possible, however, for a massive and a continuous production drying and curing process must be done on-line. This research compared and analyzed the an oven type drying device and a traditional hot-air drying device. Considering the experiment result, the cell depth that shows low resistivity, which doesn't consider the pattern difference, is $31{\sim}33{\mu}m$. Also, oven drying system showed some resistivity after around 120 seconds of drying time, and showed much better performance in minimum resistivity compared to the hot-air drying system.
